The worst rental car company I've ever had the misfortune to deal with. We rented a car for an overnight trip. Total rental car time: 3:00 pm to 11:30 am.
During the drafting of the contract, they were insistent about purchasing additional insurances from them, as any damage would be charged back to us. We declined: We have sufficient coverage and are incredibly cautious. We went downstairs to get the car from the garage. The Sixt attendant was busy; he simply pointed us to the car and waved us on to leave. We did not speak at all. There was no check out process whatsoever.
After an uneventful trip -- where the car was safely parked in a gated lot -- we bring the exact same car in the exact same condition with a full tank of gas back to Sixt Amsterdam Central Station. There, the attendant proceeds to turn on the flashlight feature on his phone to inspect every inch of the car. We are nonpulsed: It's exactly as we had rented it. However, we found it disconcerting that they showed this level of scrutiny upon arrival and not upon departure. On the back of the car, the Sixt attendant starts rubbing a mark on the trunk. Damaged; "scratched", he says, and tells us he will have to report it. I say, that was there: Here's a photo of the license plate/trunk (I always photograph the plate on rental cars just in case - by total coincidence). We go upstairs to argue with the person that drew up the contract the day before. We say we have photos of the same area of the car from the day before; that we never had a checkout yesterday -- why the CSI Miami treatment on the way out now; that the original contract even mentions wear and tear -- including the scratch on the trunk. He tells us they will report it, but based on the photo, note on the contract, etc., nothing will come of it.
However, two days after returning the car, we receive a message from the Sixt Damages office (aka: their REAL business model ...): Interestingly, they don't report the scratch on the trunk. They report a giant scratch on the front bumper! And they ask us to explain this damage. Well this is odd, we say: We left two days ago and the attendant with a flashlight didn't see that before? What's the timestamp of these photos?
And here's an interesting coincidence: I've started to tell people the story about how a "rental car company" is trying to scam us with fake damages... and the 3 times (so far) I've mentioned it, people have said, "Yeah -- one time Sixt tried to scam me". SIXT. Every time. Every story sounding familiar: Brining people in with low rental prices, because the REAL business model is pressuring the uninformed into either buying their ridiculous extra coverage, OR trumping up fake damages to make up the difference.
Our "damage" report is still being "investigated". I wonder how there has never been a class action lawsuit against them for these outragous tactics. read more
