I should have know he was terrible, when he asked me to inspect the guitar outside in his porch, I gave him the benefit of the doubt as these old timers sometimes are good techs. Conversation is attached as well as the pics from before and after. I have also to provide context as he said in person he could get me to 98% there, and I was dumb enough to believe him. he said it would be done in a week. and gave me a hand written paper with the serial of the guitar mistakenly on it. The next WEEKS, were a combination of I need more days, I am sick, the dog ate the guitar and so on. After asking for several updates, he said the shape was 100% and color 80%? Please see the pictures, he is either a scammer or color blind. Also he did not mentioned that he messed up the binding and over grinded the guitar right next to the area. When I picked up the guitar he was unapologetic, he said he would not charge me but I needed to go elsewhere for a repair. I did tip him 45 bucks and left before I started seeing red. I asked him to pay for the repair at another tech and he agreed, when I asked him for approval from a quote from another tech for 25 more dollars than he was charging me, he said he would pay and called me an extortionist. blocked straight away, run do not even think about bringing your instruments here if you care about them. read more

This past Monday, November 10, 2025, I had the great pleasure of meeting Greg Spencer, Master Guitar Repair Technician and fellow guitar player. The day before, I had broken a string on my acoustic guitar, so I decided to take a chance--based on a Yelp recommendation--and called Greg at Six Strings Down to see if he could replace it. Not only was he able to install a new string, but he also took the time to assess my guitar, polish the wood, and treat the instrument as if it were his own. His craftsmanship is impeccable, and Greg himself is personable, proficient, and professional. He promised simply to repair the string, but he went above and beyond in every respect. I've been playing guitar for almost 60 years and Greg is by far the most educated and talented guitar tech I've ever had the pleasure to meet! I brought him my James Tyler Variax guitar that needed a piezo and lead to be correctly soldered into place to restore the digital effects. Although Greg had never worked on a digital guitar before, he set a day/time to meet with me, took a look at my guitar and provided me with a firm fixed price to do the repair and to put on a new set of D'Addario 10/46 strings which Greg keeps stock of. Although the repair took a half hour more time than estimated, Greg is a man of his word and only charged me what he had quote. After Greg's repair, my Variax guitar sounds as good as new!!! Would give zero stars if I could. First of all, greg doesn't accept calls. Has a business and takes no calls..ummm ok? Text only. Text him asking about a setup. Get prices, get oversold by him. Kiss method works. Nobody likes getting sold. We set up a time for next weekend to drop off my guitar. 3 hours later he sends me a text overselling his services again. I respond curtly the next morning and refer to gibson guitars as charging a lot for their guitars of inferior quality in relation to his martin guitars text he sent me. He then somehow misunderstands my message and takes it as a slight? I then send voice message so he doesn't misunderstand what I meant thru text. He then starts confusing me for another guy and denies me service at this point. Considering how many guitars I have and friends and fam as well that I would have referred to him, he shot himself in the foot business wise. Any businessperson who handles business like this and acts this way is not worthy of any business at all. Heed my advice and steer clear of old greg. I know I will. read more

Excellent work by Greg of Six Strings Down! High attention to detail and he really knows what he's doing!

I just bought a brand-new Telecaster and Greg looked it over with great detail. He found that the factory set-up was skewed in several areas. He got rid of the buzzing and rattling of my strings and sustain has improved considerably. His price was very reasonable. The repair was more labor intensive than he anticipated so It took him longer to complete the job than originally expected, but there was no extra charge over and above his original quote. Greg is exceptionally knowledgeable and honest, and I am extremely satisfied with his work. I have no hesitation to continue to use him for all of my guitar repair work.
