Whilst it's been 15 years since I lived there permanently I always make sure I pay Blind Jack's a visit every time I'm over seeing friends and family. It's a small pub but very cosy and full of character. The landlords are extremely welcoming and all the staff are friendly and knowledgable, more than happy to offer their advice and samples of beer if you can't decide what to go for. You certainly won't find any of your mainstream lagers or bitters here (thank goodness) but instead there is an ever-changing array of craft and real ales from breweries such as Brew Dog and Magic Rock, as well as an increasing number of their own very excellent brews. If you're a real beer lover and looking for a great pub to sample some top ales over a chat with your mates (it's strictly no music) then make sure you pay Blind Jack's a visit. But the main one which I really can't go without visiting is Blind Jacks While Manchester isn't exactly short on quality pubs and craft beer, Blind Jacks offers something special which is easy to explain. A lovely, quaint, ancient building with loads of tiny rooms making it the perfect place to hang out and relax - combined with a revolving selection of amazing craft beer on tap (as well as some great local breweries). Put it this way - just on this visit they had beers from Stone (Ruination), Oskar Blues, Ska (Modus Hoperandi) and Brewdog (Punk and Hoppy Xmas) Paul and Debbie the landlords are always very friendly and up for a chat, as are the team of younger bar staff. You can always get a sample or recommendation, plus they brew their own beer out the back which all the staff seem to know about - their chalk board in the bar also has details of what they're brewing next so the regulars can keep up to date with what's next in the pipeline. Their milk stout and pumpkin head ones are firm favourites! Like them on Facebook for the latest updates on beers on tap, special nights (like their BBQ night in Jan) and all news going on. I may have just heard a rumour that they're opening up a distillery too so even if you don't live in Knaresborough it's worth making the trip here just to check out a great selection of drinks in great surroundings - you won't regret it!

For those not partaking in booze they also make decent espresso based coffees served with little tiffin bites which is a really nice extra touch. Food wise the Half Moon keeps it nice and simple with a meat, cheese or meat and cheese platter. Unfortunately we'd already eaten before we visited but spying other people's platters they did look really good and great value too. The staff (I think landlord and landlady) were really warm and friendly and even offered table service for my coffee which I wouldn't have expected from a pub. A really great (new but old) addition to the Knaresborough pub scene, just prepare for a steep walk up Briggate at the end of your night!

Shhhweeet! But like in any other town, there's very much a full range of the spectrum from the best to avoid to the pretty damn good - with quite a few fairly average ones in the middle. Yeah there's some dodgy ones that aren't advised and in the average category there's about a million Sam Smiths pubs - ok ambience, ok, beer and the low low price is what keeps people coming back! But in the great category there's the amazing Blind Jacks and relatively new (i.e the past couple of years it's opened) Half Moon. Down the bottom of a ridiculously steep hill, it's definitely worth going to check out even if you use the hill as an excuse to have an extra pint due to all the calories burned off on the walk back up. There's a great selection of local brewery Roosters ales inside, plus some other tasty brews which are always changing. The food menu is also a good option with the meat and cheese board worth checking out - it really is just a good spot to hangout in for a couple of hours and have a relaxed session. Special mention should also go to the small beer garden in the back - it's a real sun trap if you can hit it at just the right time of day!

Okay, so this particular Viper Rooms wasn't owned by Johnny Depp but it shares the same name. That is close enough for me. Now will it live up to expectations? Well actually yes it does. It's housed in a Grade II listed building and inside they've spared little expense. We're talking four bars surrounded by multiple rooms and a mad mix up of music as well. You'll get anything from disco to Hip Hop. It is beautiful, it really is. A special mention goes out the centre piece chandelier and quite awesome (not to mention comfortable) leather sofas throughout. To get you in the mood and your disco shoes raring the drinks menu will blow you away. It beats some clubs I've been to with a huge selection of cocktails, wines, fizz and beer. This is grade A stuff. It may be a little mainstream for some people's tastes but just go with the flow and enjoy the venue if nothing else.
