In addition to that, he did provide sound guidance on how to work with these, as well as a frank opinion. The techniques that he used with our dogs were effective, but the logic that he used to explain behaviors made me raise my eyebrows a few times. Mike subscribes to pack theory. Pack theory is outdated and was debunked by the same group of scientists that performed the study. (If you don't believe me, go to google scholar and look up some recent studies from academic papers.) Those notes aside, I do find Mike's professionalism to be highly questionable. Multiple times, Mike had directed condescending comments towards me flat out saying that women (unlike men) were more prone to making emotional (and i guess the implication was that they consequently make irrational and irresponsible) decisions. From how he talked, I was under the impression that he was coming into the consultation with this attitude, because I am female, even before meeting me. This is due in part because his phrasing indicated that he felt that my husband was the "rational" decision maker. I felt very disrespected in my own home. This behavior is very concerning, especially since he said that his daughter had made him aware that these types of comments could be perceived as sexist. I would assess other trainers first. I suspect you can get the same results, for the same/better price, but without the disrespect or outdated logic.

Since I work from home, if I can't entertain her enough she tends to get a little bit restless and then neither of us are very productive. She needs a lot of attention and exercise, so being able to drop her some days is a godsend. She comes home tired and happy. The staff here are super friendly and really seem to enjoy what they do. If my crazy pooch rolls around in special sauce (code for just about any excrement a dog can possibly accidentally roll into), they give her a quick bath so she comes home clean. Even if they're concerned about her, i.e. that small kennel cough epidemic that swept the area, they call to tell me if something is wrong. I love that they celebrate holidays and dress my pup up and send home pics and report cards. It feels like I'm getting a lot of bang for the buck, and I know she's in good hands because I can spy on the webcam! Also another awesome perk. She really loves coming here. I say "daycare" and she is by the door ready to go. I appreciate the enthusiasm they share for their pup clients and that they provide excellent service for their human clients too. It's definitely worth even the occasional splurge to have your pup be entertained, tired, and some sane human time. I had a very disappointing experience with Dogtopia Manassas on my dog Luna's very first day of…read moredaycare. When I picked her up, I noticed she had a bite wound on her back that was bleeding. I immediately asked the staff what had happened, but no one could give me a clear explanation. After I requested that they review the security camera footage, I was eventually told that the dogs had been "playing rough." What concerned me the most was that while I was speaking with the front desk, I could clearly see one of the daycare rooms where dogs were playing roughly without any staff member actively supervising them. That raised serious concerns about the level of supervision being provided. The following day, Luna's wound looked worse, so I took her to the veterinarian. She was diagnosed with a bite wound and required an examination, skin cytology, wound treatment, antibiotics, and medication. The veterinary bill came to $299.53, all because she was injured while in Dogtopia's care. As a customer, I pay for professional daycare because I expect my dog to be safe, closely supervised, and well cared for. Luna is a rescue dog, and trusting a facility with her care is a big decision. Instead, she came home injured on her very first visit. While I appreciate that Dogtopia refunded the daycare fee, I also believe they should take responsibility for the veterinary expenses resulting from an injury that occurred while she was under their supervision. This experience completely destroyed my trust in this facility. I will never bring Luna back, and I cannot recommend Dogtopia Manassas to anyone looking for a safe daycare for their dog. I sincerely hope they improve their supervision practices and take greater accountability so that no other dog or owner has to experience what we did.

Dr. Johnson, who has been the primary veterinarian for all three, has made every visit worth every trip. Additionally, for our trips away from home, I let them stay at Pet Centre. I could tell from my initial walk-through that they were more than willing to let me bring in personal belongings for each visit that my dogs were there for. Not only that, but the yard in the back of the hospital is HUGE! Not a whole lot of places in the region can say they've got that.

I'd booked my dog at Chantilly Petsmart for the first time and repeatedly said he could be aggressive--said it multiple times. However, he'd been boarded before (they were booked by the time I called.). Petsmart NEVER asked me to come in for an assessment even though I said my dog was small, but aggressive. I attempted to drop my dogs off and when my dog didn't want their color put on--they said they could not take my dogs. I was boarding a plane in four hours, what was I going to do? They did NOT CARE. Luckily, I found another place, that was recommended by my vet and they had space for them. They did great! No aggression whatsoever! Will never again do business with Petsmart.

My dogs first boarding experience was two months ago. My husband and I had a travel delay in Paris, and were not going to be able to pick up our dog until the following day because our flight was rescheduled. I made an international call to inform them, however they said that he could not stay an extra night...thankfully my brother lives an hour + away was able to pick him up. This added another 2 hours of driving to our trip after traveling for over 24 hours. My brother also told me they originally brought out the wrong dog to him. After my dog was settled back home, I looked at the receipt and medical records. They were suppose to give him his influenza #2 of the series but it was documented as he received influenza #1. In shock since they had his medical and vaccine records, I called them and they said it was incorrectly documented, and they did credit us which I appreciated. His most recent visit is the most disturbing. Over the July 2nd weekend, with heat index over 100, my dog came home with the pads of his back paws burned. We noticed as soon as he got out of Pender a limp in his back legs. My husband went back inside to ask if he had any accidents or hurt himself, had they noticed him limping? The answer we got was that he got 5 walks a day and they didn't notice him limping once. Therefore I assume they didn't give him any attention or they just didn't care. When we got in the car, my husband looked at our dogs paws and immediately my dog pulled back his back legs and whimpered. The pictures don't do it justice, but it appears he was left out on the hot turf or pavement. It doesn't take long for the pads to burn from the heat of summer as most dog owners know & I never thought this would happen at a boarding facility. My dog is now limping, licking his burns and my husband has to take off work to take him to the vet. We wanted to love pender retreat as much as we love our vet at Pender Fairfax and the convenience of the retreat to the airport but after this we will be looking to board our dog elsewhere.

Our second dog was symptomatic a couple days after that. I contacted Pender and at first received a generic response wishing us well and an empty offer for us to keep them updated. When I did respond that the second dog was sick and it was upsetting that there was exposure that caused them both to be sick, I received a neutral response essentially explaining how contagious the illness was and the general manager shaking off any responsibility. I am beyond upset and disappointed that this is the response provided by a vet run facility. Our pets are our family and I expect them to be well taken care of while at Pender. We were never warned of any outbreak and they really didn't care when we alerted them. We are still struggling with sleepless nights as the dogs continue to wretch through recovery and Pender didn't even give the courtesy of a response when we expressed our situation. We acknowledged that things happen and no facility can prevent an outbreak but how they handled the situation was completely unacceptable. Fortunately northern Virginia has a lot of options when you need to board your pet. Please look to a place that will protect your pet and keep them safe, you won't be guaranteed that here. Yes, it's a veterinarian, so you'd think that is obvious. But it hasn't been our experience that all vets are really in it for the pets. They spent a ton of time with us and provided a ton of options for our aging dog who has some chronic pain. They spent a ton of time with our German shepherd puppy and went out of their way to make the experience rewarding for both dogs. It's so important, especially for a puppy, to have a good feeling about going to see the vet. They clearly understand this and make every effort to make the dogs love it here.
