They aren't just not waterproof when they fail; they become the equivalent of wet blankets that smell and take a long time to dry. The stink is because, to try to keep the waterproofing going, we rarely washed them. We try to keep our landfill contributions to a minimum. We'd be willing to pay more for true waterproofing.
