Managed to get a table in the dining room, and decided to order a few of the starters and a bottle of local wine. Rather than go for the standard pub gear which was also on offer, we opted for oysters kilpatrick, marinaded pork belly skewers, arancini balls and grilled mushrooms with sliched brioche. All the food was good, and while nothing was particularly outstanding, there was definitely nothing bad either. Staff were enthusiastic, helpful and made great recommendations. Was definitely worth the visit.

Immediately, you realise that this place is run by a couple - he was the chef, she was the everything else (didn't get their names!!). It was delicious & really flavourful with lots of chicken & veg - exactly what you wanted on a cold day, sitting by the fireplace. For mains, my boyf (lets just call him that from now on) wanted to order a salad, however we were given the impression that they so rarely have salad orders that they were actually unable to accommodate the order, so he ordered the fishermans basket instead. He said that it was just 'alright'. I - on the other hand - had the lamb shank after seeing it on other people's plates. It was fantastic - just the kind of dish you'd want to order at a Tavern. As a shank should, the meat just fell from the bone with no need for a knife. Hearty, tasty, filling & on a plate full of veg - it made a great lunch. There are a couple of tacky 'wall stickers' around the place, but the cosiness of the Greenock Tavern made it worthwhile.

Okay, it is a bit of a trek to reach, and it is also effectively in the middle of nowhere (though I am sure if you are determined enough you could walk, or at least ride a bike), but for me at least, it was certainly worth it. Okay, the pub itself is your typical country pub, and you can be assured that the publican knows everybody who walks in through the door on a first name basis (except for people like me who trek up from the city just to have a beer). They have a pretty nice beer garden, however it is one of those beer gardens that it basically a converted backyard, complete with two yappy dogs that want to play with you while you are having a beer. This pub certainly has a character of its own, and I know I would be very tempted to stop by here again if I am ever in the area.

The staff are always friendly, the order at the counter service is efficient and great for groups (none of that - "I had x,y,z... well who had the a,b,c" messiness that comes with splitting the bill). It can get incredibly busy and bookings are reccommended (even if you just call on the day or when you are on your way in) They host a weekly quiz night and there is a huge members base that participate frequently - a lot of local competition. I have eaten here about 4 years ago and enjoyed the meal, but for me this place is all about the British pub atmosphere and beer. As far up North East road as you can go before hitting the hills; it is as much an English pub as any you'll visit in London. London Pride, Old Speckled Hen, Hobgoblin and Newcastle Brown Ale can all be bought in imperial pints. The staff and owner Michael all pour a mean pint and won't leave you waiting at the bar while they polish glasses or have a chat. The owner Michael has also done some serious renovations while keeping the original charm of the place intact. I remember the first time I visited feeling crammed in, with the low ceilings but with the new toilets added and the space being refurbished to extend the dining area, the interior feels a lot bigger and more welcoming. The ceiling is still low and beams have coasters from English beers and pubs, so it's retained its charm. Also, Michael has built a great car park and awesome outdoor area for drinking and listening to some local bands. Perfect on a summer night.
