"the royal oak" a 5 min walk from ockendon station. my first impression on looking at this "ye…read moreolde" pub was well presented and clean, upon going inside initially it was dark. a very clean refurbished pub with a marble bar and exceptionally clean and pleasant surroundings. the bar staff were very welcoming and greeted me with a smile, they were attentive and made me feel as though they had known me for years. the beer garden has a relaxed tone about it with parasols and seating for over 100, the grass and border flowers are immaculate, whilst i was there, there was a wedding party in the other side (the restaurant) the food i hear is superb and well worth a visit on a sunday.. my overall impression is this is a place you can bring your wife/ partner to and will both be impressed at the attention to detail and warm friendly atmosphere... terry h (an impressed member of the public) 08/october/2013

The atmosphere here is always quiet, never packed out and no TV's showing sport or pool tables. This sometimes works against the place, as a Friday night here often feels like a Monday afternoon. The actual property itself is extremely nice, with a big seating area, garden, car park and a local legend about a the haunted mens restroom! If you live local, and would like a quiet pint, then this is the place. For others who live closer to Upminster town centre, then the trek to the pub is not worth the effort when there are similar places in town.

Our table was booked for 9 o'clock and we turned up around 8 to enjoy a pre-dinner drink. We were duly told our table was ready and sat down to enjoy our dinner - we were given the Valentines menu (a designed - 1 starter 1 main 1 desert) and given the usual a la carte menu - after perusing the menu we chose a starter of the a la carte and the rack of lamb from the Valentines menu - to be told no more rack of lambs available - disappointing but ok we will choose another main of the a la carte - whilst eating our dinner we became aware of the manager sitting with a couple of tables and chatting to the diners. Anyway mains finished and we were asked if we wanted desert - of course no diet here it's Valentines ! So we asked for the desert of the Valentines menu 3 soufflé miniature dessert - 2 only be informed sorry we don't have those either. Now not one to complain - especially as this was our local - But if you're advertising a Valentines menu and out of the 3 items you can only offer 1 - I'm sorry but that is appalling and quite honestly unacceptable!!!! Manager of course was called - And it was quite obvious we were not the first to of complained due to lack items on the menu that night - there were no raised voices and the manager was very apologetic - but that didn't take away from the fact if your advertising a Valentines menu and you go on Valentines Day - you should expect to be able to have the menu. Or at the very least when we sat down be told immediately that it was not available (feedback apparently will be given to the waitressing staff) we could have then taken the informed decision as to whether we wanted to stay! Unfortunately I did not take the managers name - and he could not have been more apologetic - And to be honest we felt sorry for him he'd had so many people complain that night and to his credit compensated us for the poor service. But HEARTSWOOD INNS - if your going to offer a menu - don't cut ordering to the bone - that your staff won't pre-order enough to cover the covers because they are afraid if they over order so food is left they will be reprimanded!! All credit goes to the Manager at the Jobbers in difficult circumstances. HEARTSWOOD INNS - you should be disgusted with yourselves and this is one regular customer who will now think twice before booking again !

The service can sometimes be a little slow and your table can sometimes be neglected but other than that it was a very pleasant meal and I will probably return! This is my second experience at this restaurant and it was a lot better than the first time I went!

Staff was friendly and the place's ambiance was exactly what you'd expect an English Pub to be. Had the Steak Pie and jacket potato. Food was well done and there is a lot of "steak" in there. I quote steak because in Texas steaks are particular cuts and are always grilled or baked/roasted. The meat in the pie was what we'd call roast - which isn't roasted but rather slow cooked. It was a nice place and I'd recommend it.

Young, chavy, mockney-middle class yuppies have made this their haunt during the evenings. Pink polo shirts and boot cut jeans with bad footballer haircuts mince around between the suits, talking about football and shouting at each other. The toilets are normally busy with essex boys doing coke and the bar is even busier. Such a shame as the selection of beers on offer here is great and so is the price. The food is good for the money and the atmosphere during the weekdays is relaxed. If you are visiting Upminster, avoid this pub on weekends but otherwise try the cask ales and decent wine selection during the week.
