Theres just something about it, some secret ingredient, that makes their doughnuts irresistible. It's a bit like Hienz ketchup, that kind of thing. There's just no imitating it. Donut Dreams do actually sell the kind of doughnuts you are likely to dream about. They're all so brightly coloured with different colourful toppings, as if they've been lifted straight from Homer. No, not the ancient Greek writer, but the character from The Simpsons. This maybe makes it a better place to treat kinds to a doughnut than is Krispy Kremes. The taste though, whilst not bad, just cannot compete. They have a slightly bready texture that Krispy Kremes manage to avoid, and with one five minutes down the road, Donut Dreams will have to accept three stars.

It was the perfect mid afternoon snack, washed down with a hot cup of tea. I prefer the glazed rings over the stuffed donuts as I find them way too stodgy and always end up feeling sick after. I have bought a couple of boxes from this store myself, usually as a gift for someone that's obsessed with them (as many are) and the shop itself is lovely. I've always found the staff to be very helpful. They do an ok coffee in store too.

So, it's with a sad heart that I report that I was rather disappointed by the British version of Krispy Kreme. That's not to say their donuts are bad - indeed, I could happily gorge myself on the delicious baked glazed goodies until I pop. I think it's more to do with the memory of their taste that I've carried around in my head for so long, and the fact that things rarely if ever live up to the sensations you create in your brain. I still love Krispy Kremes, and have been known to pop in the store for a chocolate cruller and a coffee when I'm passing by. But I must admit that I can't wait to get back to the USA so I can try the real deal instead of the slightly inferior British imitation.
