Eggs Benedict - my first ever!
Ellie B.

When you've been on a boozy Saturday all-dayer in Manchester, there's only one thing that'll sort you out the following morning: a good old fashioned fry-up. Thanks to good reviews from fellow Yelpers, we headed straight up Deansgate to Katsouris where we were greeted with friendly staff, speedy service and a very well-priced menu, all housed in a lovely Victorian (I think) building. If you're a bloke (or just have a mammoth appetite), order the 'Big Kat' Full English (just £5.50 and comes with two of everything). I opted for the 'Little Kitten' English breakfast (only £3.50, with one of everything) and wasn't disappointed. Grab a table by the window, drink plenty of mineral water and just sit and watch the world go by. That hangover doom will soon evaporate, trust me. All in all, I would say our experience of Katsouris was pretty much purrrrfect!

Peri Chicken, Halloumi & Chorizo wrap (£4)

Very impressed with Katsouris, having walked past it thousands of times I finally decided to see what all the fuss was about. Everything they had to offer looked really good, but as there was nobody in the queue I didn't have much time to deliberate. Even so I managed to hit the jackpot with the special they have on at the moment - the Peri Chicken, Grilled Halloumi & Chorizo wrap - wow. For £4 that's some flavourful dining! I was pleasantly surprised at how much meat they stuffed in there, definitely great value for money. Looking forward to trying out the original Katsouris deli next time I'm at Bury market.

£6.15 for this and a flat white - I was stuffed!

I'd heard amazing things about this place but for whatever reason had always opted for other joints. On this occasion I had a bit of time to kill before my train and needed a little something to tie me over until dinner - so I decided to give Katsouris a go & I'm so glad I did! For only £6.95, I got myself a Flat White, decent, a Bottle of Sparkling Water, refreshing, and a huge plate of Paella & Chicken, amazing! It may not look much on a photo, but it was some of the tastiest chicken and rice I'd ever had and left me so full I didn't eat dinner that night! There's is a real old school cafe feel to the place and I love it, the staff were welcoming and chatty and the fridges were stacked with to-go options if you're in a rush. Yet another top Manchester eatery I'm in love with - thank god for the gym.

Eggs Florentine £3.95

I'd been here once before, many years ago to grab a quick sandwich in a rush, but today I got the chance to sit inside the cafe, order some hot food and really check the place out. On the corner of Deansgate and John Dalton St, Katsouris Deli is not easily missed. It wasn't too busy for half nine in the morning on a Tuesday and there's plenty of seating inside. The cafe is neatly laid out and I can imagine that when it gets busy at lunch time with people popping in for sandwiches the way the place is organised will really help. There are so many things on sale here. Freshly made sandwiches and salads, hot food, breakfasts, meats on ciabatta (hot or cold). They have homemade soups that change every day and the coffee is pretty good too. I ordered the eggs florentine - 2 slices of thick brown toast, 2 poached eggs with hollandaise on a bed of fresh spinach. It was lovely! And at £3.95 you can't complain!! I'd definitely go here again.

Katsouris is a Manchester institution and rightly so. I mean it's an everyman to all your foodie needs being a gourmet deli, a hot meat sandwich station, a Greek meze centre as well as offering some of the very best full English breakfasts in town! My personal choice is to go for the full English while also keeping my wife happy as she goes for the salad bar or meze - or vise versa - you literally don't have to choose if you're feeling like going healthy or nursing last nights hangover! All of the ingredients are of the highest quality while the prices are actually kept pretty low by neighbouring restaurant/cafe standards. On this occasion I had a full freshly carved beef roll while my friend had piri piri chicken and both filled us up hugely even though they were under £4 each. Just a few tips 1. Tables are limited and sometimes at the weekends it's super busy so try and go off peak either late morning or mid afternoon 2. It's rammed in the day for take out at lunch time so give yourself an extra 15 mins if nipping in to get a sandwich 3. There's no toilets inside so nip across the road to Byron burger and use theirs.

Ohhh, Katsouris. What a brilliant place for lunch, brunch, breakfast, afternoon tea, coffee and cake. Speaking of cake, let me tell you about my first ever Katsouris experience. It's a pretty special cake that you manage to eat even though you're full to the brim from a Chinese buffet lunch earlier. (For those keeping notes, upon entering their delightful deli-eatery on Sunday to lunch with our friends, I think it was the chocolate brownie I had. Covered in fudge sauce like a pudding. Good christ.) Squidgy, gooey chocolate cake that is truly impossible to hold with your hands - that's the kind of chocolate cake I like. (Unfortunately I couldn't get a room with this particular yummy dish as I was in an office at the time, so I had to stifle my usual food porn noises.) And so I fell in love with Katsouris Deli. The Gothic building which houses it is one of Deansgate's loveliest, and something to behold. You just wouldn't expect to find a deli in there. As well as the aforementioned January fitness-botherer sweet treats, there are mouthwatering breakfasts such as Eggs Benedict, sandwiches with stuffings and cranberry sauce served with hot meat (perfect if you're feeling the post-Christmas blues) and plenty of traditional Greek morsels like the critically acclaimed mezze. Now, about that mezze. If you have a read of Chris M's review (http://www.yelp.co.uk/biz/katsouris-deli-manchester#hrid:3gxxTud3y6WZzLP575gCIA), I'm the lady he was sharing the mezze with and man, it is huge! They even give you the floury soft half ciabatta separately so they can cram more onto your plate. It came with ham but we had a generous portion of additional gammon from the carvery at a mere 50p (they might have charged us the full £3.50 with the amount they gave us, but no!) which was salty, fresh and tasty. And the tzatziki especially was superb. Aware of the lack of loos, I did what my parents always encouraged me to do before long car journeys and went to Kendal's beforehand. (Going to Kendal's, incidentally, is not what I'd do before long car journeys. Visiting the WC however is.) But Chris mentioned something about this being to do with them only having a certain amount of seats, and restaurant policy states you only need a toilet if you have over 30 or something... either way, Katsouris has survived long enough and is packed to the rafters enough at lunchtimes throughout the week and weekend not to worry about such things. So not to tread Chris's already covered ground, I'll just talk about the coffee briefly. I went for the Colombian filter coffee at £1.40 for a nice big cup, and it was super. Nothing wrong with their beans here, that's for sure! And if you're after an Americano it's only about 10p more. Brilliant, comfy to sit in at, lively and a true Manchester institution. Deansgate should be proud!

Paella with chorizo sausages and meat (under£5.00) I have no words but to drool over the picture whilst I'm writing this.

Katsouris Delicatessen is unbelievable. At first glance it appears to be quite similar to a number of other places in Manchester in the Phillpots vein. It looks like a posh, independent sandwich bar and coffee shop that would sell some great lunches to people with plenty of money. However, a closer inspection reveals the negatives of this to be falsely founded suggestions, and the positives to be all true! The place is always bustling, and full of people enjoying their gorgeous food and drinks. The range is amazing, particularly in the sandwich department. They offer ciabattas or half ciabattas with almost every filling you can imagine, and plenty of creative European fillings that you wouldn't have thought up yourself. My favorite is the Bavarian one with german salami and smoked cheese. It's a joke. The half size ones are bigger than a regular sandwich and they're about 2-3 quid. For 4-5 you can get the full size, which is enough for two people. They even do hot sandwiches from the carvery as well. Great coffees as well, and a prime location on Deansgate in a gorgeous old building. Probably the best sandwiches in Manchester.

Nom nom nom :)

One of my fav places for a good fry up! This place is off Deansgate. They do a mean all day breck called the big cat! 2 eggs,2 bangers,beans,mushroom,2 bacon, tomato and toast for £5.50. This place does salads, roast beef on ciabatta and roast dinners too. This place gets busy so be warned. :)

pulled pork on top of paella with onions and salsa

If you're looking for a heaping portion of delicious meats, this is absolutely your spot. I've heard nothing but great things about Kats' Deli, so I was excited to give it a try. Luckily, I came well after the lunch rush, which means there was still a fairly full house but not as much chaos as everyone seems to experience earlier in the day. I got the pulled pork with paella and I was blown away by the monstrous portion I was given. I could not even remotely finish it, but I have to say, it was de-lic-ious. The pork was tender and juicy and the paella was packed with flavourful spices that make my mouth salivate as I type this. Though I couldn't finish my entree, this does not mean that I had eyed their bakery goodies from the moment I stood by the counter. The gooey brownie behemoth and I locked eyes and the rest was history. My goodness, it was complete and utter heaven and I have absolutely no regrets (again, a portion so friendly I simply could not finish it..although I really tried with this one)! The delectable quality of the food will absolutely have me coming back for more. However, I was sadly a little disappointed by the lack of meal options. I get that it's more of a sandwich and meat kinda shop, but with meat that tender and downright sensational, I would love to experience it every which type of way! Bring on the mashed potatoes, chips, and steamed veggies! I also would've loved to see some more Greek options. As a Greek deli, I was expecting a more Mediterranean-friendly menu. Again, the meats would be unparalleled on a skewer with tzatziki sauce. Regardless, I thoroughly enjoyed my experience here - especially because I got a huge plate of food, cup of tea and sensual brownie all for around £7! I'm just fine with that!

Pulled pork paella

My parents were coming to stay for the weekend and the plan was to meet my auntie for a quick lunch before heading off for a spot of shopping. My Aunt is gluten free so we needed to find somewhere reasonable but with a menu offering more than the standard sandwich. We arrived around 1 and it was packed - having waited around for about 5-10 minutes people slowly moved on and we managed to grab a comfy seat. After perusing the menu a lot longer than the obvious regulars around us we all eventually managed to choose something! I opted for the paella with pulled pork - a huge portion with a massive amount of cooked meat for £5.50! It was delicious with just the right amount of spice; needless to say I didn't finish my portion and took the rest home! My Aunt was also mega chuffed with her portion with peri - peri chicken and she can be a tough cookie to crack when eating out! (Kudos to you Katsouirs!) My mum went for the mezz platter with ham and all the trimmings - including a yummy salad, homemade humous and tzatziki sauce. She was impressed by how lean the meat was and was also stuffed after polishing off her large plate!! You really cant go wrong with this place! 4 of us for lunch plus drinks was under £25 - where else in Manchester can you get this real value for money accompanied alongside really tasty homemade food?!

Spicy Parsnip soup
Sofia D.

Great food at great prices, you really can't go wrong! There aren't many places you can have a really good lunch for £2.50-£5 and the portions are fantastic. I'd recommended the Paella if you've got a big appetite (I usually get 1 portion to share and it keeps me going till dinner). The soups are a great too and change everyday, the last one I had was 'spicy parsnip' which was delicious, a thick and flavoursome hearty soup. It gets really busy at lunch time so I'd suggest going after 2 during the weekdays if you want to sit-in. If not the service is fast and really friendly if you need to quickly grab something to go.

I love Katsouris, and can't believe how rarely I visit. I guess that not working in the city centre rules it out as a lunchtime venue, and my weekends are so lazy that occasionally I don't leave the house (whaaaaaat, leave me alone!) so a trip to Deansgate can occasionally be a bit of a stretch. Anyway, a trip down that end this weekend has remedied that. Katsouris is now our breakfast venue of choice. Why? Because the boyf woke up on Saturday wanting eggs benedict. Because the boyf loves eggs benedict. Because the boyf has pronounced their eggs benedict the best ever. That's right, ever. Me, I'm not a crazy fan of eggs ben, I think it might be the sauce, but the boyf luuurves it. So, to Katsouris we went (after conducting a quick Yelp search for 'eggs benedict'- ta, Emma-Louise!) This really is a gem of a place. A proper deli that serves an almighty amount of incredible sandwiches. As it was about 2pm, I justified that it was OK to have a beef sandwich for my breakfast, so ordered my fave, the beef sizzler. At £5, you get a whole ciabatta stuffed with succulent beef, dijonnaise and red onions. It's huge, mind, and even with my mammoth appetite, I only managed to eat 2/3 of it, but it's OK because they give you special foil-and-paper bags to take home your leftovers (though you might consider giving your doggy bag to a homeless person, as it eases the middle class guilt somewhat) Though the service here can be a little confusing, depending on whether you're going off the menu, or ordering from the carvery (LUSH) or buying deli stuff, it's a great place to eat. The tables are small and close together, so the atmosphere is always pretty buzzing, and the staff are incredibly polite and helpful. As well as lush sandwiches etc, you can buy all manner of antipasti stuff, olives, peppadews, artichokes etc at the counter, very reasonably priced. Expect to pay around £1.25/100g of whatever you're having. The olives stuffed with feta are incredible, and the peppadews are the best I've ever tasted. As well as antipasti, you can grab sandwich meats and cheeses. The pastrami is particularly lush. They also have their own homemade chorizo, a quid a sausage! It needs cooking when you get home, as it's not the dried-out kind, but it is bloody lush. I luuuuurve Katsouris, and it is my belated new year resolution to go there for breakfast (early afternoon, of course) for a ciabatta and a killer coffee.

I took up residence in the dimly lit back area, where the cheerful waitstaff promptly took my order of a blood orange hot chocolate made with almond milk (!) The drink came out frothy and light, with a cloud of chocolate-dusted milk foam atop subtle, smooth chocolate. No bitter or artificial aftertaste. While bopping along to the background music and working on my laptop, I was informed that Leaf would close early at 19h instead of 20h, so I seized the opportunity to order dinner as well: the jerk lamb rump, and an order of jasmine pearl tea. The waiter helped me verify that the lamb was free of dairy, and soon I was chowing down on succulent roast lamb and garlicky roast beans. The mango jam was a perfect accompaniment to the meat, but I found the coconut/coriander rice too mushy to my taste. It helped me to imagine them as mashed potatoes instead, haha. The tea was sensuously fragrant, and I welcomed the scented fog clouding my glasses. Considering it was after midday when i visited, this was a good thing. The store was very clean, I got served and finished very quickly and got everything I wanted to get so this is all good. Its a very nice store. If i was to have any criticisms about the store, my only one would be its location. the mile drive down from the Manchester arena wasn't the best, its one of those where (not meaning to offend) I made sure my windows were up and doors were locked. Lots of store openings which seemed dodgy as the smaller shutters were up and were probably selling niike clothing (as in knock off, wasn't a mis spell). However when i was inside waiting for my brother to order, i noticed a Deliveroo rider coming in to collect an order, so when i can finally move up to Manchester, i would more than likely just get someone else to bring it to me so I don't lose a kidney on my way there. its a nicer store than Bury and a lot bigger but I would probably go to the Bury one more due to the surrounding area. I ordered the french vanilla (which I'm still not 100% sure what it is .. so gonna say its a hot choc) and i got the reindeer doughnut, the maple cream and the iced topped crueller. All very nice

Embarrassment set aside I went to grab some menus to find there was none. I was informed by a waitress that I had to read off the wall..so for ease I took several pictures of the menu to enable my friend to browse with ease. The menu was limited, I mean when I think of breccy I imagine eggs to be present at the very least. But no this was eggless, baconless with just options of toast, avocado, and nothing inspiring really..also there were NO PRICES. Walking up to the till I was acknowledged by a grumpy guy. Perhaps he needed a Smile latte. Anyway I ordered a cold brew along with the avocado on toast, paying extra for some additional smoked salmon. After choosing what fresh bread I wanted, he slapped me with a £12 bill.. I was gobsmacked.. Returning to my seat I reassured myself " This is going to be the best avocado on toast ever". So the cold brew arrived with a fresh piece of orange floating in it. It was pleasing to note that the brew making is still top notch. Now the food itself.. this arrived on two pieces of toast, half a pear sliced on each piece with a sliver of smoked salmon. This was dressed with a light mixture of chili and lemon. My friends beans and toast was deconstructed, she had to make it up herself...this was I think £6-8 ...for beans on toast.. I found my victuals tasty enough but could not justify the price, £5.99 would have been more realistic at best. Anyway overall the service was poor, the lack of important details such as no physical menus, napkins, prices, inquiries if the food was okay and lack of logical seating. If you can give me an early lunchtime caffeine high amidst me going back and forth between Deansgate, Castlefield and this little edge of the Oxford Road Corridor no one else sees taking in apartment buildings and living dimensions and kitchen units and such on very little sleep, then I commend you. And considering to eat that sandwich at the table would have cost a fiver alone, to take out, that and the coffee came to £4.50. Takeaway it is! Bonus points for having Anthony Worrall Thompson strawberry handsoap in the bathroom. Did you know such stuff existed? I didn't! Check my photo. It's for reals.
