For years I've heard rave reviews about Singo, so my mother-in-law, husband, and I stopped in for dinner tonight. While it's exceptionally cold outside at the moment, I don't think there was any heat on at all - it was freezing in the restaurant! Sat down and my chair cushion popped off of the seat and had to swap it out. Server was nice and food arrived quickly, we were in and out in an hour. However, we found everything to be extremely average. They're known for their baked rolls, and I'm still left wondering exactly what that means. I had the chicken teriyaki roll, which was mostly filled with cucumber, and the sushi pieces were so huge that it was difficult to eat. I also ordered the steak teriyaki, and I've never received it like this before. The teriyaki sauce was non-existent, and it had very thin slices of beef that were mostly fat. Definitely was not worth the $23. My husband said his hot night 2 roll was overly drowned in sauce and had too much rice, and his salmon was sliced so thin that you could actually see the wasabi underneath - at all of the places we've been to, we've never seen that before. My mother in law was fine with the tuna tartare. We're really left wondering what all of the hype is about. read more

I have been going here for years for the spicy tuna salad, I cannot pass Waterbury without stopping for it.

This is our go to for sushi. Only reason it isn't 5 stars is two things out of their control, parking and raised prices. Our normal order recently that we've made almost monthly for a solid 4 years went up almost 20%. That's a lot. And was definitely noticed. We will gladly pay it but we probably will not order monthly anymore just due to sticker shock. The cucumber crab wrap is my favorite and my husband can't not get the Cole roll. Stick with the specials, they're called special for a reason. So special!! read more

Went for lunch with a friend based off the reviews on here. The plaza was a little dingy but inside the restaurant was cute, clean, and nice. The sushi was a little different than other places. The rolls were absolutely huge and not priced high. The fish was fresh but it seemed too wet or something? The rolls didn't stay together well and the fish (especially spicy tuna) was seeping out of the rice. The shrimp tempura roll was more of a dish than a roll. The dishes were a little beat up with chips in some of the platters. The man who took our order was pleasant and nice. Overall the fish was fresh and tasty but not sure I would go back. Singo is close to where I live and I'm so happy I finally tried it. Everything is served in such an aesthetically pleasing way, and the portions are a little bigger than average. I got the Philadelphia roll, and was pretty excited about the fact that they include avocado on it. The salmon on it was a little warm, which was kind of off putting, but the sushi itself was still really good. We also split a bowl of edamame, which had the perfect touch of salt. I was pretty full by the end of the meal, and was almost ready to pay and go, when I discovered the tempura ice cream. I quickly ordered one for us to split, which was a great decision on my part. It was absolutely delicious and was such a good way to end the meal. The staff here is friendly and I really enjoyed coming here! read more

I was in Connecticut and my brother mentioned this place. I'm giving it 3 stars because although it was taste the presentation is not great and I didn't like the quality of the rice, it was on the mushy side. Taste: some were yummier than others like the Salmon killer I think it was; that was great. The inside of the sushi rolls were good the issue for me was the rice. The rice was kind of in the mushy side. Presentation: I like that they serve all rolls with a small side of what is inside, like fried calamari or steak but all of their rolls were on the bigger side so you get less pieces and they fall a apart. I've seen these kind of rolls before but we ordered 6 and all six were the same. We had the miso soup as well, it was good but had like 2 pieces of tofu. Flavors: 5 stars all day, every single time. Variety is alive and well. There's a huge selection of fish, sauces, ingredients. You name it, it's on the menu. It's a fusion of traditional sushi and creativity that is worth the money and wait. But....very unreliable with the composition of the role depending on who is making the roll. I am a sushi fanatic, and highly recommend singo, but it takes a lot away from the meal if the roll is falling apart before you get it to your mouth. I love this place and I eat here almost on a weekly basis. This place gives you something like a hipster vibe with Food Network always on the TV and top radio hit on the speaker. As for the food their sauces are fantastic. I love the chicken teriyaki roll and there gourmet spring mix salad with the ginger dressing is delicious! Today I decided I was wanted something with chicken on it so I ordered the chicken oriental salad. Unfortunately to my surprise they had drenched my salad with the dressing and my salad was wilted. This isn't the first time they have made a mistake with my order and that is not a reason to take a star but putting dressing on a takeout salad is just standard. I will continue to support Singo Sushi and so should everyone else because they have been around for years and they have great food. "Creative and Amazing" Sitting in the middle of an unassuming little plaza in Wolcott, CT. is the most amazing sushi restaurant. A friend of mine has been telling me for a while now how great the sushi is at Singo's. I expected to see the typical dated decor in most asian restaurants. Red velvet walls with dusty asian trinkets all around. Far from it at Singo's. It's bright, clean, and modern. And the Sushi.....WOW !!! We began with green tea and the garlic edamame. These garlicky super flavorful little treats are more addictive that potato chips. Then we had a few items from the chalkboard of specials. We had the "Sexy Roll". Tuna, spicy crab, avocado, wrapped in cucumber served with ponzu sauce. Then we had the Spicy Tuna Tartare. Spicy tuna, jalapeno, red onion, and avocado. My friend doesn't like extra spicy food like I do so I ordered the "Hot Night II". Spicy tuna, jalapeno, red onion inside, pepper seared tuna outside. This roll blew my mind. Outstanding, sensational, amazing, delectable, delicious, incredible, creative, spicy, exquisite. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. I have never had a sushi roll this great. Everything was very good, but that "Hot Night II" roll was over the top. My next visit can't come soon enough. read more

With Sushi being one of my top 5 go-to ethnic foods, I'm always on the lookout for a new option. Especially within striking distance of the office. My options at home are just okay, but kind of limited. And I don't really need it better enough to get me to drive 20 minutes for it. A friend of mine suggested this place soon after it first open and we met there soon after for a test lunch. It's been years since that first taste and in that time I've been back at least 20 times. As far as the standard sushi options go, it's really good. But it's the specialty rolls that are the real draw here. These guys come up with some seriously wild ideas for rolls and in all honesty, there have been a few that I wasn't happy with. Not because they weren't good, just because the flavors weren't for me. Anyone I have ever been there with would also attest to consistent happiness. If you go, start with the special roll menu, trust me on this. If you're looking for a standard California roll you'll likely be pleased, but not overwhelmed with joy. Forget your drink of choice (or underestimate how much you needed)? Don't fret, there's a small but oh to convenient liquor store next door. With your table and drink of choice move on to the menus - yes menus. Singo has an extensive menu, specials, and 3 dry erase boards with specialty rolls galore. The worst part of dining here is having to choose from the multitude options. Singo has great standbys, kitchen options (though I only ever eat the sushi) and many creative choices. And no matter how often you go there is always something new! Everything I have ordered has been fresh, beautifully prepared, and plentiful in portion. Like everyone else I have preferred some menu items over others but based on my taste preferences, never because of low quality. What's my favorite? Don't be put off by the sketchy location (between a bar, tobacconist, and package store on the outskirts of Waterbury). This place is a hidden gem! Sitting at the bar watching the food prep was both reassuring and fascinating; the food is clean and fresh, and the presentation is creatively artful. The place was packed, service wonderful, and my mango-salmon roll was as beautiful as it was delicious. Baked salmon roll (was burned got my refund though) 2.Pepper seared tuna ( saturated in the sauce, mushy at best) 3. Rainbow Roll (thinly cut pieces of fish, rice was cooked properly, fake wasabi and cheap ginger) 4. Philly Roll (cream cheese was warm, overcooked asparagus instead of fresh cucumber). I came here for lunch with a coworker last week. Despite the good reviews online I was very skeptical when I pulled up as it's in a dilapidated strip mall. However, I was very pleasantly surprised by the quality of the sushi, which is the best I had had in quite some time. The lunch specials are not cheap (especially for this area) but they are worth it. I will definitely be back. A note, this place is BYOB but there is a liquor store in the same plaza. read more

Made the mistake of ordering from Singo Sushi tonight. I was initially told 35 minutes for my order and when I arrived I was told 15 minutes more so I waited. I noticed that the food prep people weren't even wearing gloves. Next thing i know, people started swarming in and social distancing was non-existent. I immediately left the restaurant and waited in my car hoping that the crowd would dissipate. After another 20 minutes, it became apparent that my order was not going to be ready anytime soon nor did the crowd thin out. I noticed that a number people were waiting in their cars as well. Ended up leaving the place without dinner. The next time I have an urge for sushi, I will wait until my regular go-to place for Japanese food reopens. Better than taking a chance of getting the virus by Singo's disregard of public health and safety. read more
