Came here on a Friday night. It was a trivial game night. A nice place to chill and drink beer. Their beer selections were amazing. I tried out the Grunge. It had a hint of blueberries. A nice fruity kick. The food is really good especially the carnitas tacos. Quite hefty and generous filling. It comes with two. One taco was good for me. This is a nice place for date night or just to hang with friends. The seating arrangements aren't as close together which is great. I saw there was an outdoor space. I recently came here for an engagement party and really enjoyed my visit! It is a far walk from the subway, so plan ahead if you are going in chilly weather! The crowd on a weekend evening was good - not packed like sardines, but enough to mingle with new people and walk around comfortably. My group had the back area for ourselves - there was a bad draft! Very chilly. Not sure if it was the building or because of the weather. I tried a sip of cider, and ordered the Lager and Pilsner on the menu. I like light drinks, but the cider was very sugary. Such a cool spot! Great hours, great beers, great staff. On Saturdays and Sundays there are free brewery tours at 3 and 4 pm which take about 30-40 minutes. The brewery is small but makes it that much more of a gem for a local spot with fantastic beers. About a year ago I was looking for bars with board games and when I came here I was excited to see a bunch of games you can borrow and play while you sip on drafts and flights of beers crafted in house. I also noticed a band set in the loft area and the bartender said they have live music on most Friday nights in the summer. I can't wait to check that out! I love beer. Not the Coors Light / Bud / Miller kind, and definitely not the Michelob Ultra kind. I don't want a beer that tastes like they took a used pint glass and filled it up with water; I like stouts and porters - beers that have distinct flavors. If you're the same way, then you'll probably like Singlecut Beersmiths. With that said, this isn't a "date night" kind of place unless your date is really into beer. So basically, if you're taking me out on a date (ladies - don't fight, just add yourself to the online queue and wait for your turn) this is an awesome idea. If it's someone else (in that getting-to-know-you stage, possibly finding out oh-you-don't-like-beer? stage), probably not so awesome. We came here late Saturday night (10:30 PM IS late for a 63 year old...oh wait, I'm 36) looking for something to eat as well as drink, so let me warn you: don't come here hungry! Especially late. By the time we got there, they were out of steak and mushroom pies and soft pretzels, and when I went up to order another pie for us to share at shortly after 11 PM, the kitchen was closed. I will say that what we had was good (a Shepherd's Pie and a bratwurst), but each serving is a little short of an actual meal but a little bigger than just a snack. Oh and just as another point to consider: I've listed half their menu. It is a limited offering, so you better be in the mood for what they've got. But on to the beer. Singlecut makes the beer the star of the show, as it should be. If I had to rank the ones I had: 1. "Eric" More Cowbell: Milk Stout - I'm a fan of stouts, and this one was my fave. Definitely has some coffee taste to it. T2 "Rory" Pale Ale and "Billy" Half Stack IPA: very similar in taste, both being citrus-y. 4. "Dean" PNW Mahogany Ale: the toffee accents came through. The location: It's on the industrial outskirts of Astoria, almost all the way up to the Steinway factory. It's still easier to get to than Vermont and your reward for getting there is great. There's a parking lot across the street. The aesthetic: An inviting new-industrial taproom, always playing vinyl records unless it's Friday night and a live band is playing. Usually just spacious enough. My wife and I like to pick a board game and a few 5oz glasses to sit, sip and play for an hour or two. The beer names: Nearly all their beer names are music references just slightly too cool for me to get. Thanks Google! The beer: The beer's the thing, and they're masters of so many styles. The tap list will tell you that they're hopheads, though they don't disclose anything about their recipes. They'll tell you that the proof is in the pint, and they're correct. Do make sure to check out their non-IPA styles as well. They're rightfully very proud of their 19-33 Pilsner. Don't skip it. Other highlights include the Dean Mahogany Ale, In and Around the Lake, Eric Nitro Milk Stout, Thinking Hard About the Weather, the Kim sour series in the summer. It's all so good. I was anticipating their opening for months. And then they finally opened. And I finally got to try a Singlecut beer. And I was not disappointed. The tap room is small, quaint, and feels clean. Three important factors when enjoying a fresh, cold beer. I'm sure this place gets packed which ruins the feel, but what can you do? The beer is good. The white lager and the double IPA were probably my favorite beers on the menu that day. This is odd because I don't usually like IPAs. The IPA had a good solid taste without the overpowering bitterness that most IPAs have. The beer that was aged in the rum cask was my least favorite because the undertones were too strong of rum. Needless to say, I loved the brewery. I wish their prices on growlers were a little lower, but they're still new, so it's excusable. Next time I will be sure to get a tour. read more

Since we were in Astoria for brunch, we decided to checkout this taproom on the recommendation of friends. Cool place, lots of seating, tv's with NFL games on and various board games that can be played at your table. Started with Billy Full-Stack IPA and the Chrissie. BF liked the IPA, I liked the Chrissie, but it was a little to sweet for me. The couple next to us had just finished playing scrabble, so we decided that we would play a game of scrabble with another round of beer. Beer in round two consisted of Bon Bon 2XTNT IPA and Billy 18 watt IPA. We both agree that the second round of beer were better choices for us. BF likes the 2X IPA's and I liked the 18 watt IPA. Also enjoyed our game of scrabble. Tours are give on Saturdays and Sunday's at 5pm for no charge. We did not do the tour so can't comment on this. But if we find ourselves in Astoria again we would come back and check out some more brews. read more

SingleCut is the first of the three breweries I've visited in Brooklyn/Queens/Long Island, NY to really hit home for me. Between the dimly lit tap room with ample seating and garage door open to the sidestreet, and the live music played from a corner loft space, this was a great spot for spending Friday evening as I waited to pick up an arrival at LaGuardia. Their tap list was sufficiently diverse with a couple new takes on beer styles. In particular, their oak-aged sour stout was an interesting take on an otherwise straight forward style, which was also available - chocolate milk stout. They also offered a dry - hopped Gose, which was pleasantly crisp, slightly salty, and just hoppy enough to whet my appetite. Also on tap, a spiced wheat lager, mahogany ale (think hoppy amber ale), Brett wheat ale, and the couple seemingly mandatory IPA's. Their bar service was friendly and efficient, and offered tastes before expecting a commitment to a pour - something I highly value. In the end, SingleCut seems a great spot to spend an evening broadening one's beer palate. Skål! read more

Singlecutt is heaven for ipa drinkers! Go visit the Mecca, parking is very tough so I get why you might take a pass on this

It took me over two years of living in Astoria to stop in here, but I would urge anyone to avoid this mistake! Compared to many breweries, SingleCut does have a spacious tasting room - plenty of tall tables (some bigger, some smaller). The decor is also very cool - guitars on the wall, headstocks as the beer taps, barrels all around you. Before this particular trip, I stopped in a couple times before quickly for a few bottles of the Half-Stack (IPA) and Mo' Shuggie (another IPA) which are smooth, easy drinking IPAs. This time we had a few to taste and I cannot wait to go back and have more (maybe to try out the kitchen too). Beer reviews: Half-Stack and Mo' Shuggie: only have had in bottles - hops are not overpowering; easy drinking IPAs Mad Eric: sour milk stout - my favorite SingleCut beer so far. I'm not usually a stout guy, but the sourness tones down the stout taste and makes it much more drinkable. Full-Stack: double/imperial IPA - a bit hoppier than the Half-Stack, but still very drinkable Mad Michael: sour, but a bit on the bubbly side, lighter tasting than the Mad Eric Brett Jan: wheat ale, very smooth and drinkable All-in-all I would recommend this brewery to anyone. Getting there: Kinda out of the way. Took the subway to get here and had to walk a bit. Would say it's more of a 4.5, but 5 if it was more accessible. Lots of choices here that rotate and they're all so good and cheap! They don't have an explicit sampler but there are 'shorty' 5oz pours which is pretty much a sampler for 2-3 dollars each (most were 2)! Plenty of beers to try so it was easy for me and my girlfriend to find the one we liked. The full pour was around 7 and they even offer to go in cans (32oz) and jugs (64oz) for cheap! Really cool place! You can see a lot of brewing equipment out and there's a drum set/mic which I haven't seen in action yet but... anyway. Wasn't too crowded on Thursday night and the bartender was especially friendly. I wish I got his name but he's got a cool mustache and... that's about all I can remember. Checked in on us often. It's not the biggest brewery, but that's a good thing! Tons of beers available (about 11 when I went in November 2013) and they're all super cheap. Try a $10 flight of 5 to wet your whistle and find out what you like. I tried everything they had available and my favorites were the Dean (nitro) and the Eric (milk stout). It's also fun to try to guess what guitarists each beer is named after (the name "Singlecut" is a reference to the Gibson Les Paul). We also had a guided tour of the space (it's not that big, so it took 10 minutes at most), and they have a pretty solid operation going on. Their staff also knows their stuff and was open to hearing suggestions for new bears. It's a little out of the way if you're not driving (and especially when it's freezing out!), but it's nice and toasty inside. Despite the giant garage door, they have industrial strength heaters to keep you warm. And a projector to show the game. Stop by! If you can't make it, they're beginning to have a wider distribution, so order a Singlecut at your local bar! I like to support local business, even if they're an hour and a half away! read more

A little walk away from the N subway stop, so prepare yourself! Awesome little brewery with a good amount of seating, inside and outside. Staff was very friendly and knowledgeable regarding beer selection. They have a pretty good selection of board games which is fun! Sit around, drink some beer, play some games. What's even more awesome is if you get hungry, they do have some small bites. I didn't see the entire menu, but we saw others eating fresh beer pretzels, and decided to try it as well - it was delicious! You can get 5 samplers for $10, or pints for $5-$7 which I think is pretty reasonable. The day we went, there were 8-10 different beer options. We tried them all, most were IPAs, however, there was one really good lighter White Lager that had an amazing flavor to it. Was definitely our tables favorite of the day. The hours are a bit strange and not consistent, so if you plan on making a trip out here, I would call just to make sure they're open. I think they do a lot of private events, which is why sometimes they close early or open late. Kind of annoying, but also a great idea to have your private event here!! Overall, I think it's was a pretty cute spot, relatively smaller brewery but still a good amount of seating. Good beer and hang out spot. I digs it, I digs it. Super mellow and non assuming place in the end of nowhere, Astoria. Seriously, last stop on the N/W and then a bit of a walk, or you have to drive but then one person can't really drink so why do that? It's easy to miss since it's nestled in a small building right next to a random empty lot and across from a strip mall, but if you see peeps sippin on some ipas outside, you'll know you've arrived at the right place. Like others have noted, no flights but that's quite alright - just opt for 2 small pours (5 oz and can only get 2 at a time) and you can easily try most of the beers available. My personal fave is the Some Cat from Japan IPA - so light, refreshing and rad logo as well. Come in with a few board games, bring some food, play some board games, and have a grand ol time! read more

It was pretty crowded but a table opened up right away. Had decent pretzels, fantastic pickles and chips to go along with our favorite beers. Most NYC breweries do not give you such consistent quality across the spectrum of beer types but SingleCut does them all really well and a few stood out as one-of-a-kind beers: Jan Olympic White Lager: really special lighter beer with citrus elements that give it an orange tang without compromising the light body. Jan Brett Fermented White Ale: My favorite of the favorites, you have to taste it to believe how different and delicious something like this could be. Mad Michael Sour Lager: really interesting for a sour beer, you can taste the wild ferment qualities right away Half Stack IPA: hops just punch you in the nose before you even taste this hoppy wonder of a beer. read more

I think SingleCut is a hidden gem of Astoria, it's slightly off the beaten path. It is the perfect place to hangout on a beautiful day, they open up the garage door front and it's all open air. There's tons of games to play and big long tables for large groups. I've loved every beer I've tried so far as well! Super fair/great pricing for a great quality local product. I came here once when a live band was playing and I would warn others to not go during live music if you plan to have any conversation with your friends, because it was SO LOUD inside there when the music was playing I could not hear anyone at all. My first (and only, but not my last) experience at SingleCut was a pleasant one. I came with a bunch of friends...we were all as full as possible, coming off a Sunday brunch @ Queens Comfort. We tried to walk off our meal by walking from QC to SC. It was a success for most of us. I loved the beer selection. As many breweries do, they have a lengthy IPA list...but they also had just as many, if not more, other beers. A sour that was interesting - it was a cask beer so it was relatively warm and not too carbonated...I likely would have enjoyed it more if it had been colder and bubblier - just my opinion - I understand a cask beer will be lacking those two things. It was funny - our group of 10 had run the American Brain Tumor Association's 5k that morning, and they had a beer on tap which all the proceeds from went towards Brain Cancer Research. We ran the 5k in honor of a friends wonderful Mom, who left us too soon. So this was really touching for our group. Really generous. Anyway, to keep me from getting emotional over here, their white lager was my favorite. It was floral and a little cloudy...just how I like my white lagers. I really loved it. They had a few sassy stouts. They were tasty. I also really like how they have varying sizes - you can get cute little half beers -- REALLY key for full bellies after comfort food intake. I also loved the resident board games and card games they had for people to use. We played some kind of trivia game based on Wikipedia. Awesome. Also, the space is beautiful. I was so excited for this place. Heard great things. Boy was this bad. Let's start with the Beer because it's the most important thing... good. Nothing special but doesn't disappoint so I would recommend it if you can swing by and pick some up. Whatever you do, don't come hangout here. We arrived for a night of games and got talked into their trivia night. We started by ordering food and drinks. Beers were served cold and quickly. The food, however, sat at the bar for 25 mins because they forgot to call us and tell us it was ready. We then had to wait for another 10 mins as it was cold which was surprising... Why surprising you might ask? Because it was literally 85 degrees in here. Couldn't get an explanation but didn't matter because it wouldn't change things. Then top things off, we had a giant roach fly onto our table as we patiently waited for their audio to be fixed for trivia. I can't make this stuff up. They get a 2 for the beer and 0 on the experience. And although this might be a random perfect storm of terribleness that's a one time thing, I can't change what we experienced. We arrived and unpacked and began the process of setting up. As we began to tune up a man runs up to us saying "hey guys, no wants to hear you fiddling! Stop that shit! I don't want to hear another note until you play, like seriously, who wants to hear that shit???" Naturally we were turned off but continued to set up. We were using the venues gear (amplifiers, drums) so naturally some adjustments have to made before you play a set. After around 30 seconds into tweaking my amplifier the following conversation ensued. Owner- (running up) "WHAT THE F*CK DID I F*CKING SAY!!! HAVE YOU EVER PLAYED A F*CKING GIG BEFORE" Me- "Hey man, I think we getting off on the wrong foot here, my names Ben (extending my hand) do you work here? Owner_ "I'M THE OWNER!!!! (ignores my extended hand) IS THIS YOUR FIRST F*CKING GIG???? I PLAY IN BANNNDS, WE NEVER PLAY A NOTE UNTIL IT IS TIME TO GO!!!! IF I HEAR ANOTHER F*CKING NOTE YOU DON'T PLAY!!!! DO YOU EVEN WANT TO PLAY??? ME- no. guys, let's get out of here. That's pretty much it..... In an actual response to the owner, I have played a few gigs before. I started playing out at 14. I've done 5 years of world touring, and have played on stage with U2, Santana, Akon, Wyclef, Mary J, Robin Thicke, and a whole lot of others. In all my touring and in all my gigs- this guys was the biggest prick I have ever met. It made me so mad, but being the type of person I am, I calmly packed up and left without a word. I really hope people boycott this place. Giving your money to an asshole like that just isn't right. Too bad because I live in Astoria. What a MASSIVE disappointment this place was. Unfortunately, I write this review from the perspective of someone who should have been there this past weekend, but wasn't. My friend is a beer fanatic, and his equally fanatical wife planned a wonderful surprise 30th birthday party at Singlecut for Saturday April 19th. This plan was locked down and confirmed six weeks in advance. Two days before the party, after a week of trying to get ahold of them to confirm the reservation via phone, email, and social media, they flat-out cancelled the reservation on us due to them hosting Beer Week. How did they not know about this beforehand? And even if Beer Week came up after we made our reservation, how did they not see that we were booked for that day and not tell us about the conflict? I feel like we would have been more understanding if they had made even the slightest effort to be responsible about it, but instead they probably figured that losing the business of 20 or so people would make less of an impact than messing up their Beer Week plans. Well, screw them. I hope people read this and see what a bunch of asshats they are and bring their business elsewhere. I need to preface this review by saying that I wanted to like Singlecut. I really did. I was bringing a group of friends who rarely come to New York, so I had it in my mind that this would be a huge win. When we first arrived, we were pretty excited. The place is beautiful, don't get me wrong. As far as design goes, Singlecut is doing everything right. Sadly, this is where the excitement ends. Though we knew what we were getting into, I must reiterate that this place is in the middle of NOWHERE. Across the street is the sort of strip mall you'd expect to find in northern New Jersey. And there's nothing else within a 15 minute walk. This is distinctly important to note, because what follows is exacerbated by the fact that this place is lightyears away from the city (by a NYCer's definition). Let's start with the bartenders. We had just come from Queens Comfort, where we had received what was possibly the best service we'd ever received in the city. When we got to Singlecut, we were ignored for the first 5 minutes or so, even though there wasn't much going on. When we were finally able to order a round of beers and some pretzels w/ beer cheese, we sat down. Shortly thereafter, the bartender came around and muttered under his breath, "we don't really do table service" as he begrudgingly set our beers down in front of us. Not pleasant at all. In fact, very far from it. This is not what I've come to expect from Queens. Next, let's move on to the pretzels and beer cheese. They were $10 an order, which we initially thought was very high for ANYWHERE, let alone a small brewery in the middle of nowhere, Queens. When they were finally brought out to us, we were floored. For $10 EACH, we received one single soft pretzel and a tiny cup of beer cheese. So, for 3 pretzels and 3 tiny cups of beer cheese, we paid a whopping $30. This isn't just overpriced. This is offensive, and it's laughable. The beer cheese was delicious, sure, but this sort of pricing is as greedy as it is outrageous. Finally, the beer. Now, it certainly wasn't bad. But when you're competing in a beer scene full of incredible breweries (Bronx, Ommegang, Six Point, Captain Lawrence, even Brooklyn to a degree), the beer suddenly falls flat. I had a white lager, which tasted like a Hoegaarden on a bad day, and the rest of the lagers were just as disappointing. All in all, I would be shocked if this place lasted another year or two, It's inconvenient, it's overpriced, and worst of all - it's mediocre. Try again, Queens! I do still have faith in you. This place is awesome. Literally just moved here from CT for college and went one day after school and had a blast. Great food and their beer is awesome. Decent selection of IPA and IIPA. Im not a stout guy but those are amazing too. Def recommend for people in the area and traveling through to the city read more
