Kinda funny how I had never even *heard* of Singlecut Beersmiths brewery until I went to a *wine* bar in Manhattan and ordered a Singlecut beer because I noted that it was brewed in Queens and I now live there. Then fast forward literally just 1 week later and the boy invited my friends and I here because his friends were convening here.
I call this area of Queens "bumblefuck" because there's literally nothing in this neighborhood worth going to (that I, or anyone else in our group, knew of). There was a smallish outlet mall with typical clothes, supermarket, grocery, fast food Chinese and that's pretty much it.
The walk from the nearest train station (N to Astoria/Ditmars...ie. the last stop) is about 10-15 minutes, perhaps 20 in heels - so the commute sucks, but I get that if you're gonna brew beer then you're gonna need space and so they chose to plant themselves in Bumblefuck, Queens - lol.
I like this place though, it's got a cool industrial vibe that's decidedly less hip than Brooklyn Brewery but not as fantastic as Steam Whistle Brewery in Toronto, Canada.
Lots of wood, simple steel stools, mimalistic steel lighting lamps that hand down from the high ceilings and an interesting array of beer choices (all brewed only a few feet away) and food options consisting mostly of savory artisanal meat pies and sides like tater tots, bacon & blue cheese cole slaw, cheese, meat & cracker platters and I think pretzels...but don't quote me there.
Beer-wise I went with one of their year-round beer offerings, the Jan Olympic White Lagrrr which was a tasty beer that contains a proprietary blend of whatever spices they use. I liked it, but didn't love it.
My friend went with one of the seasonals called Hank the Strand Lager which is described as being an "easy drinking lagrrr!" with a gentle kick of Juniper Berries - I think she also liked it, but didn't love it...next time I return I'm definitely trying out their $10 flight special. My boy and I also got a growler here, it's $20 to get it filled with the beer of your choice and you get $10 back if you return the growler - not a bad deal at all!
On Saturday night they had a band called "Beecher's Fault" playing a live show upstairs on their small, intimate "stage". They were for the most part a cover band and they played a few notable tunes like "Clint Eastwood" by Gorillaz and "All these things that I've done" by The Killers (!!!) - they actually sounded pretty good and I'm generally critical of bands at bars, bands that I don't know and worse, anyone who dares to touch anything by The Killers - they did so well though that I actually made a deposit in their tip bucket, heh.
Looking over their website, I really want to try their Martin BrownSound Ale - it's black ale with notes of toffee, nut and chocolate that's infiltrated with herbal citrus/pine - though I'd be worried about the "explosion of hops" as I'm not a hops fan, but I'd still give it a whirl. The descriptions for the Derek HoneyKoolsch and the Le Von LeCitron Saison also sound deliciously awesome.
With outdoor seating here (limited! Come early!) I would definitely like to come back and maybe even take a tour! Tis' nice to finally have a brewery in the borough you live in - thanks Singlecut Brewsmiths! :D read more
