Figures, I move out of this neighborhood and Astoria's first and only brewery pops up. Luckily, this isn't too difficult to get to from Steinway, where you can just onto the Q101 bus and get off a block away. While you all are grimacing at the fact I just said the word 'bus,' let's talk about the SingleCut experience..
First, yes, this is off the beaten path and the closest train is a 15-20 minute walk (N/Q at Ditmars Blvd.). You could drive and find ample parking, but that's if you're being responsible about drinking at a brewery to drive back.
Second, the place is relatively small, so don't go expecting Studio Square or Bohemian Hall space here. You won't find it. There are a dozen plus tables mostly seating 2-4 people on high chairs, and a few picnic sized tables for larger parties. Oh, and two tables outside. It says no smoking, but no one listens to those signs.
Third, customer service here sucks. I was not remotely acknowledged by any of the bartenders for about 10 minutes I was standing square at the bar and they were walking around. When I was, it was a moderately unpleasant experience. If that's the vibe they're going for, fine, as long as you don't come in here expecting a scene out of Cheers with people knowing your name and crap. You're lucky they can remember your order that you gave them less than 60 seconds ago, which happened to me.
Want to order something? Go straight to the bar. If you have a food order, they'll give you a number placard to post on your table.
Food:
Got the Steak and Mushroom pie, which was pretty good. About 5" diameter and consisting of a super flakey, buttery crust that houses a non-messy, thick filling. The steak was cooked well, not being rubbery nor mushy. There are no stand-out flavors here, but this is a satisfying bite to eat and goes well with a beer drinking session. If you're starving though, this will not fill you up.
Also got the Cheddar Bratwurst. The second I see any meat served on a potato bread bun, that's automatic points. The wurst had a decent snap to it and was piping hot. Again, nothing outstanding, but still satisfying.
Each item I ordered came with a bag of cinnamon sugar pretzels, which I've never had before. Good stuff.
Beer:
There is nothing unique about SingleCut brews here. At all. Their "1933" is extremely reminiscent of Blue Moon, if you ask me. The most unique thing I tried of theirs is the "Kim" which is their Tart Cherry Sour Lager. It -definitely- delivers on the tart and sour cherry aspect, for sure. If you don't like beer or like White Lagers, get the Jan. Really really smooth, but overall lacking any particular flavor.
Added Bonuses:
SingleCut has this elevated stage where bands can play. There was one playing that night, which was enjoyable. While it was loud, it wasn't deafening so that you couldn't hear the person next to you with some raised voices.
Plus! They have a variety of board games available. Just grab one. Cards Against Humanity included. Connect Four and Pictionary for more classic types.
Also.. I think there's a metal bin of free bags of chips? I kept trying to ask about them but no one would stop and answer my question. The server chick bulldozed past me. So I assumed they were free. If not, SingleCut, I totally owe you for two bags of chips. PM me and I'll pay you back.
Verdict? I would absolutely not go out of my way to come here unless I already lived in the area and could get here in less than 30 minutes. If you're an Astorian with the appropriate pride for living in the area, I suppose it's kind of obligatory you at least check the place out. read more
