I took my truck in for an alignment. They said they couldn't do the alignment without doing $1000 in repairs. They still charged me an inspection fee. So I took my truck to Eureka Brakes & Automotive and they did the alignment with no problem. My wife took her truck in for an alignment and waited for 2 hours after making the appointment the previous day and they wouldn't do the alignment until she paid for new ball joints. Long story short they charged her $71 Dollars just to look and waist her time and the best part is that the ball joints are good. I have been taking my car to Simply Performance since about 2017 when German Auto in Arcata was full and suggested them. I had just come off a traumatic experience with a mobile mechanic who had ruined my car by draining out the oil and forgetting to replace it so I threw a rod! I bought a different car and Simply Performance has taken very good care of it. I have had different mechanics there work on it-- mostly regular oil changes (it's a 2010 Mazda with over 200k mi on it). I always wait in the office during the oil change and staff is polite and funny and they often have a wonderful Goldendoodle named Lucy to entertain me. The prices are reasonable and I trust them completely. read more

Several days ago I made an appointment to have an after factory bumper added to my pickup truck. The employee I spoke with said I could bring my vehicle in at 0900. In order to accommodate the business I brought the truck in at 0830. When I hadn't heard from Simply Performance I called them at 1230. The pleasant receptionist said my truck was still waiting to be worked on. At 2 pm it was still waiting for the work order to be performed, now 5 hours 30 minutes from my arrival that morning!!! Out of frustration I took my truck to Peterson Collision and Repair to have the bumper attached. As congressman Will Rogers said in the 1930's: " You only have one chance to make a first impression." These guys are rip offs dont honor there warrantee and create more problems also start work without approval and are just outright idiots that take advantage of having a tool box!!! Water pumpnis chirping after they replaced it took it in they says iys leaking hoses on the belts well fkrs you replaced all hoses and belts at least charged me for them. Unfortunately, the crew at Simply Performance did not rise above the stereotypes of a typical untrustworthy mechanic. I paid $250 for an inspection of a Jeep I was attempting to sell and an oil change. The next day I received a quote for over $4,000 including complete replacement of the transmission and realignment of the tires. They didn't know I had the tires realigned at Les Schwab 3 days earlier. When I got a second opinion by the transmission specialist at the Jeep dealership, I was told that the machine "ran beautifully". If you can't hold your own in a discussion about auto maintenance with a professional, I recommend you steer clear of this shop, as they will take advantage of you. The oil change was seemingly done correctly (hard to screw up) so I threw in an extra star. read more

Thanks to the horrible mechanics, poor workmanship, and distasteful customer service of Simply Performance, I am $1,300 poorer and in debt from having to get a new car. My car stalled on me couple weeks ago and so after I got it started again, I took it over to Simply Performance to diagnose what was wrong. After having my car for a whole day, they finally told us that the radiator was cracked and I need to replace the whole thing. They had my car for 2 more days and when we finally came to pick it up, they charged us $500 for their work which I know replacing radiators isn't cheap, but still. A couple days later we noticed steam coming out from under the hood and upon inspection we discover that there's radiator fluid spraying all over the engine. We called Simply Performance right when we discovered it and the receptionist was giving serious attitude about the time we called but then finally said, "Well you might as well bring it in right now." The mechanics were basically calling my fiancé a liar when he was telling them what was happening until radiator fluid almost sprayed in the mechanic's face when he squeezed the hose. What had happened was they ended up reusing the old hose that was on the broken radiator instead of ordering a new hose which is only a couple bucks so the new clamps that they used cut a hole in the old hose and that is what was causing the radiator fluid to spray everywhere. They kept our car overnight and fixed their mistake in a couple hours the next morning. Luckily they did this for free but when my fiancé picked up the car, they were trying to tell him that this new problem wasn't caused by them. It was caused by the old clamps..... well if the old clamps caused the tear in the old hose, then why did they reuse the old hose if there was a tear in it?!? Ugh! The car drove for 2 more weeks until the original problem occurred again. The car stalled while we were driving it on the I-5 coming home from a weekend trip. After much stress and wasted time sitting at a gas station off the I-5, we came to the conclusion that we had to cut our losses and get rid of the car and get another one to put us even more in debt. Despicable! I brought my Nissan Xterra in to Danny for a tuneup. He recommended changing the spark plugs, which I did. The next day, the engine started running funny and making a strange noise. I called him - he told me to bring it back and I did, immediately. Turns out, his mechanic failed to secure the plug wire back onto the coil which was causing it to misfire and run on 5 of 6 cylinders. The problem seemed to be fixed.... ...fast forward 1 month. The problem started happening again so I brought it into another mechanic and the diagnosis was a melted catalytic converter that resulted from the engine misfiring. Danny denied that misfiring could have caused the problem and offered nothing! The repair left me without a car for 3 days and $1400 poorer. I understand that mechanics, like everybody else, make mistakes. But the way Danny handled the complaint is unacceptable. If you want to be overcharged, have your car damaged, be treated rudely, and have incompetent mechanics work on your car, this place might work for you.. Otherwise, DO NO TAKE YOUR CAR HERE! The worst experience I have ever had at an auto shop, and as a lifelong Humboldt resident, I have been to several local car repair places. The one star is for the nice woman in the office; the missing four stars are due to the stunning incompetence of Danny and crew. I always give people the benefit of the doubt- everyone has bad days, right?- but this was beyond anything I have ever experienced. My car was there for several days, during which they ordered the needed part twice: the first time it broke when it was dropped and the second time they ordered the wrong part. I was trying to get to Oregon for an urgent medical trip, and explained this to them. Worse than the incompetence was Danny's complete indifference and lack of accountability. Most people would have felt bad for screwing up and would have at least apologized and shown some kind of sympathy. Nope, not them. I finally rented a car for the trip, almost a week after I initially took my car to them. It was obvious to me that I couldn't leave it there any longer. What a waste of time and energy. If they were the only option in Humboldt, I would rather drive to Redding or Oregon for car repairs. read more

I drove my car in to get a noise checked out I feared was a broken CV joint. These guys helped me right away, they were honest, organized, and weren't trying to charge me 67$ just to take a glance at my car, unlike the other mechanics I called in Arcata. Thankfully, the problem wasn't severe, turns out my engine bolts which screw into my engine mount were loose, yikes! Probably the result of buying a salvaged car. The mechanic who helped me out was a young man by the name of Ty. He was patient and skilled as he diagnosed the potential problem with ease. By the end of the transaction I was so pleased with their service I purchased an oil change before heading out. read more

I had a truck with a lowering kit that I wanted removed and for the vehicle to return to stock height. Brought it to S.P. back in June 2016 for them to look the truck over and tell me every part that needs to be replaced with stock suspension. Told them that I would prefer to not buy new suspension parts and would prefer they sourced stock parts from Johns auto wreckers, to which they said no problem. Also told them I wanted to keep all the lowering kit parts so I could sell the kit (which sells for ~$900). Came back at the end of the day, they gave me a list of parts needed and they told me they would call to make an appointment when the parts arrived. Week or two later I bring the truck in for the suspension swap,I was in a hurry as I had a ride to take me to work for which I was already late for. I knew it was going to cost me a few pennies but they did not give me an estimate up front. Come back in at the end of the day to pick up the truck. First they tell me that "they tried to save me some money" by keeping the lowering kit shocks up front on the truck as they thought they would work out, only to have them explode as they were not compatible with the stock suspension height. Great, now I have an incomplete lowering kit that will be harder to sell and less valuable. They made NO offer or attempt to compensate me for breaking the shocks. LAME. Next, they tell me that they failed to realize that the front leaf spring hangers on the rear were also part of the lowering kit and that they would need to order stock replacements. Great. Isn't that why I brought the truck weeks prior for them to tell me everything I needed so this wouldn't have Happened?? They told me that they would recommend me not driving it or as minimally as possible. Yeah that's practical when it is your daily driver and only vehicle.I reluctantly told them to find the part ASAP so I could have them finish with the truck, again reminding them to try to find a used one from the Auto wreckers. Only after I got home and looked under the truck did I find out they every part they installed was brand new, not one part was used from the auto wreckers. I understand that maybe the auto wreckers did not have all or some of the parts, more on that to come. Fast forward several weeks, I get a call while at work saying "they looked everywhere for the part but the only place that had it was the Chevy dealership." Hmmm... I was quoted ~$900 for the part and install and ~$700 for just the part! Mind you this would have been much less labor costs had they had their shit together and had the part in the first place. I told them no, I wasn't going to work with them anymore. I proceeded to hang up the phone and immediately called Johns auto wreckers who said they had the parts in stock and charged me $75 for the parts. Bunch of liars simply performance is. Im sure the auto wreckers had at least a few of the other parts. $1,400 later, a hard lesson learned. I wont touch Simply performance with a 10 foot pole now. read more

These negative reviews sound like paranoia looking for a scapegoat. Not my experience. I'm from Portland, Or., traveling to Livermore via SF. Our Outback began to overheat at the CA border, we stopped at Arcata for the night. Took car to SP early next morning, they got right on it. I do all my own work, but not on the road, so I know what's going on. They worked on it for four hours, sometimes the guys would consult with one-another. They did a block test; inconclusive. So we tried four other fixes (radiator flush, high pressure cap, replaced a stuck thermostat. replace faulty radiator. Each test drive showed improvement, but it finally overheated with each. I now knew we had serious problem: most likely a blown head gasket. But we had to get to Livermore, decided to rent a car. Dan said he would figure it out and call us. He also got us a half-price rental at Enterprise. By the way, Enterprise says they take all their vehicles to Simply Performance. Dan called the next day: yes, definitely a head gasket. But doing the math, we could trailer it back to Portland where I can fix it, for 1/3 the garage cost. Could we leave the car there a few days? Yes, no problem. We rented a uHaul truck/dolly at Eureka. Returned to SP just before closing on Friday, settled our bill. It was a lot less than I expected. We needed to disconnect the rear driveline (can't tow a Subaru manual AWD with 2 wheels on the ground), which Dan did for us at no charge. Yes the guys laugh and joke with each other, what I saw was a happy crew, good camaraderie. And they do eat lunch "on the run". If some reviewer thinks that "unprofessional", well, he/she has more than car problems. read more

RUDE, unprofessional, unorganized, slow, aggressive liars... These people just plain sucks. I had a friends Honda Civic towed over to them Friday evening, prior to an appointment I'd made Wednesday for work to be done Saturday AM. I left the keys in the ignition like I had been told to do. THEY NEVER NEVER TOUCHED IT! They not only refused to work on it, but they didn't contact me at all until Tuesday after I had left multiple messages on their machine. As if that wasn't all bad enough, after refusing to do the work needed during the appointment and blaming us, they AGGRESSIVELY insisted that we get it off their property and out of their front lot IMMEDIATELY. When I drove past on Sunday to see what was up and if anything had happened Saturday during the appointment. They had left it completely unlocked in the front parking lot, not even in their private lot behind the locked gate. It obviously hadn't been worked on and worse the doors were all still unlocked and the ring of keys I had left in the ignition were gone! The valet key was in the trunk still where it had been left, But the important key ring GONE. To make matters worse, once we finally got in contact with them Tuesday morning they were RUDE and totally lacking any responsibility. They told us that they didn't have my contact info or a key. HOW DID THEY MAKE ME AN APPOINTMENT WITHOUT TAKING MY INFO?!?! No, they did take it, this could only have been a lie to try to shift fault to me, their customer. I remember clearly because I almost got off the phone before telling him all my info but then he had me stay on the line to MAKE THE APPOINTMENT! He then took ALL my info and said we were all set for the appointment Saturday. To make matters worse, they claim to have never seen any of the keys that were left in it(meaning someone else, either the tow truck driver or a pedestrian took them while the car was unsecured in their parking lot). This was a major inconvenience seeing as how we had no appointment anywhere else and had to just get it towed home. So now thanks to these jerk-arounds we are down two tows (of AAA's 4 free) and WE STILL HAVEN'T GOTTEN OUR KEYS BACK. It seems to me that they just took one look at the car's appearance Saturday morning and decided they didn't want to work on it at all. RUDE, DISMISSIVE, IRRESPONSIBLE, UNCOMMUNICATIVE, TERRIBLE BUSINESS PRACTICES. They don't even deserve the single star on this review ZERO STARS! STAY AWAY!!! read more

They literally broke gear shift knob making it impossible to back up and gave it back to me knowing it was broken without telling me. I took my car in to get an alignment. They were rude and when I asked how bad my alignment was when they were done they blew me off and didn't explain anything to me. Upon leaving I saw they had broken my shifter, making it impossible to go in reverse. When I brought it back I heard the mechanic tell the manager (I assume he was the manager because he is the one who took charge of my complaint though he never introduced himself) he knew it was broken when he gave it to me....no one told me! Then they tried to give me a hard time about fixing what they had broken. It was only after I refused to leave until they had fixed it that they agreed to look at it and "see what they could do". No one apologized to me and they had a third person come over to patch the knob back together so it would work until they could get the part. I never had the opportunity to speak with the manager again, he just disappeared so I was forced to ask the new mechanic who knew nothing about the situation if my car would indeed be fixed properly and verify that I would not be charged when it was. I called 3 times over the course of a month and they still didn't have the part. Still no apology. I finally filed a claim with the Bureau of Automotive Repair and bought a new car. The worst kind of people, I have no idea how they are still in business. read more

First of all, I am someone who is very wary of auto shops, and I usually do as much of my own maintenance as I can because I don't trust people I don't know touching my car. That said, I was very pleased with the service I received at Simply Performance Automotive Service. I needed an affordable oil change, and I'd found this place referred to on Yelp, but no reviews yet. I also needed my tires rotated and I wanted my battery checked. I called them up and Danny was very nice to me and scheduled me in the next day. When I got there, I asked Danny if he could check the work I'd done replacing my spark plugs and do the rest of my 90,000 mile check-up. I told him I'd be willing to pay for the extra labor, but he didn't charge me a cent to check my work and make sure my car was running in top shape. All in all, it only took 45 minutes for the guys to do everything I've described to my car. And I'm used to waiting 2 hours for an oil change at other places. When I got back to the shop, all he charged me for was the oil change and the cost of a washer he had to replace. I left feeling very grateful for the good service and good deal, and after the oil change and good treatment, my car was purring with delight. The only downside was that they didn't wipe off the steering wheel, so I got some grease on my hands driving home. That's not a big deal to me, so I give them 5 stars and I'll definitely recommend them to my friends. =) read more

Crooked, my daughter took her car there to get it fixed because it wouldn't start Danny the owner did a bunch of work on it that didn't need to be done and charged us almost $600 and never address the problem. He told us he could fix the problem but it would cost another $600. We said no thanks we went to pick it up he said he didn't know there was a problem with the car. I asked him how many people bring their car to a mechanic with no problems And why he did all those repairs and put a new starter in and stuff on it if there is nothing wrong with it ? With that he did not answer I asked them for a refund on the stuff that we didn't want or need done and he said no and gave us $35 back. I had to argue Fir that and they told us they were charging for the diagnostic to find out what was wrong with the car and said they would waive if they had to do repairs and they did a bunch repairs and then try to keep her $35 diagnostic fee and didn't even find a problem. We ended up talking to another mechanic and fixing the problem ourselves for $45. if you want to get ripped off his great place to go. Our car wouldn't start when are trying to leave and he wouldn't even come out to acknowledge there was a problem. Basically he ripped off a young teenage girl had no problem with it he's a crook, a coward, and a liar. Just terrible, don't waist your time or money. read more

Please stay FAR away from these scummy people. Their attitude was absolute garbage and just seemed like slimy and sleazy salespeople. They tried selling me all kinds of extra bull services and parts I know for a fact I didn't need and I even had to go to another mechanic to do rework on what I first paid them to do. The mechanics I talked to gave me VERY little confidence they knew what they ware talking about or what they were doing. I had the feeling I was talking to prison parolees ticked off this is the only job they'll be stuck in for the rest of their lives. read more
