As a result, Dear Hubby and I haven't been close by to Little Calf to remember to stop in for quite a while. Recently, though, after a nearby medical appointment I felt like some non-dairy ice cream. It was a Saturday in the mid-afternoon, and they weren't very crowded, which worked out great for us. They always have at least four options for frozen "ice cream" without the cows' milk dairy. Having just been through an MRI test, I decided to treat myself to a small sundae. Hadn't had one in ages! Their hot fudge is outstanding! Just the hit of chocolately goodness I was craving. I paired it with lemon sorbet. It was a wonderful combination of sweet and tart. It was warm enough to sit out on their side patio and just relax for a while. I remarked to DH that I miss all the plants that the previous business owner had kept out on the patio for atmosphere. The current iteration is clean, but on the boring side. We love their food, so I'm overlooking the lack of ambiance for now. That being said, DH and I have been discussing recently how much we miss the kinds of places that used to have great style in their decor. Theme restaurants are more rare these days than they ought to be. I'm sorry for our kids and grandkids that they don't get to experience more of those kinds of visually interesting kinds of places without having to go to a theme park. They got a variety of ice creams, some common ones but also some new ones. This is the first place I ever had a chance to try the espresso ice cream, which is ice cream with a shot of espresso, and it was delicious, especially as a coffee lover and ice cream lover. Kids devoured all their ice cream, which is rare for them to do. They also serve food here, which we did not get to try but is good to know is an option. They have tables everywhere and a fountain machine and some unique teas I got to try, like their lavender tea! This was beautiful and so amazing. The rum babas were a standout: bite-sized, soaked in Jamaican rum, filled with Chantilly cream, and topped with a raspberry. So flavorful and unique--each bite was indulgent without being too heavy. And then there was the Velina cake... oh my goodness. A beautiful sponge layered with chocolate mousse and hazelnut mousse, all covered in a glossy dark chocolate glaze. I've been to Italy multiple times and grew up around Italian baking, and this is hands down the best frittelle I've ever tasted. Light, golden, and filled with vanilla custard, then finished with a dusting of powdered sugar, it was truly unforgettable. This is a real Italian bakery, and once you step inside, the space completely opens up--high ceilings, a beautiful interior, and a hidden, speakeasy feel you'd never expect from the street. The young man with blonde hair who helped me was so kind, knowledgeable, and clearly proud of the bakery. It made the whole experience even better. The latte was perfectly done as well. Most places serve it in a paper cup where the espresso and gelato just blend into a mushy mess. Not here. Carrara's presents it beautifully on a stone tray, with a proper espresso cup and a transparent glass so you can actually see the layers of gelato and espresso.
