However, if you are claustrophobic, have medical issues that make getting in and out of an MRI difficult, require any modifications (even minor) to their standard protocol, or are unsure about how you will react to contrast, go elsewhere. On the plus side, they have multiple MRIs of different types and sizes. When you are booking or ask a question, they will often respond with the name of the machine or the room number as if the typical patient knows that info. I have been here several times and have had more than a dozen MRIs in my life at various facilities. So many times I have walked out of this facility. Two things are needed to get a good screening - the right machine and the right tech. I have had multiple instances when they have booked me in the wrong machine. I have also had them switch the machine at the last minute to the wrong one. They have some good techs, but you don't know who you'll get. They have too many techs who are very inexperienced. They have book knowledge only; that stops them from adjusting to the patient. For people with claustrophobia, the tech needs to listen carefully and adjust. If the patient cannot handle a head cage, insisting on putting barriers around the head and adding foam blocks creates an unsafe environment. This is especially egregious when the patient has had successful MRIs of head and neck with none of this. It is actually optional if you can stay still. But inexperienced techs will push for what they have been told is the norm. There is also an issue of techs not knowing how to help people who struggle to get up onto the machine bed. Add to that that people who are injured enough to need their services walk down slick hallways in hospital socks. Also, many older people are helped by being able to keep their glasses and hearing aids until they are on the machine. Taking them early, which they always do, adds risk of falls and disorientation. The greatest issue with techs is simply not listening to the expressed needs of patients. If someone says they need the room well lit, that doesn't mean turning on the light in the machine while keeping the room dark. Requests for time to settle in and zone out before starting are interrupted by chatter expected to calm you. However, having a tech repeatedly tell you that they know it's tight in the machine and that it is really hard to handle only adds to the stress. Additional issues are layering on blankets when the patient says they don't want one, touching the patient without notice, and tossing sheets over your face. If things go poorly and you ask for space, many of the techs, in trying to be compassionate, will touch you or follow you around. Again, this exacerbates the problem. Then they'll suggest you try meds. If you can't, they stare at you like that is the most bizarre thing they have ever heard. Some will even push the meds as if they are fun. Finally, I was there one time when a patient had a severe reaction to the contrast. She was treated like she was being dramatic. This worsened when they pulled a curtain and spoke about her, assuming she couldn't hear. We both could. She needed a shot of epi and to be sent to the ER but they saw breathing difficulties, striations, and a rapidly spreading rash as nothing. They seemed to care more about getting her out of there than helping her. Personally, I need an MRI but I will not be able to get one. Guess we'll wait until I'm passed out in an ER.

But mom called someone and I called someone and somehow, I ended up with an entourage of 3 (+me made 4 in my car). So, I drove everyone with me to my appointment in SF. Man my car felt heavy! Always take your entourage with you for a intravaginal ultrasound and pelvic sonogram. My little team supported me during my appointment and took over all the seats in the waiting room. When the technician asked me if they were all with me, I quietly said yes. They were all here for me (blush!). So, the technician is super nice and informative. The procedure is going to be weird and uncomfortable no matter what!! But what needs to be done, needs to be done... think cucumber with a tiny camera with a condom. Yea, that's how intravaginal ultrasounds are like. Breath in! Let it out, then let the journey begin. My vjj was like a super model, the technician took photos of everything in there. And when she tried to tell me what was what, I just nodded up and down like a robot. But truthfully, it was all just a giant blur to me. She said, this is your ovary... I saw a blur. This is your lining...I saw a blur. This is the opening to your cervix...I saw a blur. You get the point, I don't know what the hell I'm looking at! It was all just a blur!!! After we were done, there was a bathroom conveniently located in the exam room - kudos to that cuz I needed to 'freshen' up! And when I exited, all concerned eyes from my entourage was on me! My technician poked fun at my entourage and that she's never seen such a large support system (blush!)!!! The outcome... my vjj is going to be a-o-k! Though...I still don't understand what it looks like. I guess blur is a good thing.

I was about 8 weeks and didn't have a doctor here, so my doctor in Chicago referred me to this center for an ultrasound. I called to see if they accepted my insurance, and they said they did. On the first visit, we didn't hear a heart beat, so naturally scheduled a follow-up for the following week, at which time we did hear one. On both visits, we did not see a doctor, just the technician, who performed the vaginal ultrasound and did not give us much information. She said she would give updates to my doctor in Chicago, who then called us with information. We switched insurance right after, due to the move and new job, and I found an OB here. At the same time, I got the bill from UCSF--$2K per ultrasound, for a total of $4K. The ultrasound had a bunch of tacked on costs, like doctor's fee (I'm guessing the tech showed it to a doctor there), facility fee, etc. Insurance said they would only cover half of each, so we're paying $2K out of pocket. To make it worse, USCF doesn't have an automated monthly billing option, so I have to log in every month which reminds me (hence this review--I just made a payment!). When we went to my first OB visit, he was going to perform an ultrasound, but I hesitated and asked how much it would cost. He said even if insurance didn't cover it, the cost would be about $300. (Insurance did cover it). This is mostly FYI for those of you that may be going there for a basic ultrasound or something, to know about the additional fees that get tacked on, which your insurance may decide not to cover. We would have been better off going to a doctor's office or something without insurance and paying out of pocket, rather than a research hospital/facility that has a lot of additional fees.

They required I fax a detailed and 100% correct order before they would schedule me, and their process took so long that by the time I got the right order in, there were no appointments left this week (it takes 45 minutes for a fax to come through in their system!!!... that's insanely slow. It's 2019 people, how about using email? Or a bit of human connection and heart?) So now after 90 minutes on the phone with them and my dr office, I need to start from scratch elsewhere. For the second incident, I wasn't told it was cancelled until I checked with the front desk after sitting in the waiting room for 25 mins past my scheduled appointment time. Incompetency from top to bottom. Many customer reviews and several doctors I spoke to tell a similar story. The front desk staff of young Michael Smith, a young Latina woman and an Asian "concierge" act like detached, frightened children. Please note, pointing out their races is just for identification purposes. Before my most recent appointment, I spoke with the concierge about the need for the quieter open (vs. closed) MRI machine due to my noise sensitivity condition called hyperacusis, but she apparently didn't note the importance of that for the rest of the staff because one of their techs decided the image quality would not be sufficient which seemed to have led to my appointment getting canceled. It's a mystery why none of the front desk people could notify me before I arrived and sat in the waiting room for 45 minutes. I asked Michael for his supervisor/office manager's phone number which he was reluctant to give, first saying she wasn't onsite and "she's really busy", then giving me an email address with an incorrect letter in the name, confirming it even after I read it back to him letter by letter. After forwarding the message to info@simonmed.com as instructed in their reply to negative reviews, Brianna (not Brionna) Dolayo finally responded and at first seemed to want to help, but later flaked out on a phone appointment time we had agreed to. Unfortunately, they don't want to be accountable for the disorganized, incompetent mess of SimonDead. If you're a high risk, high reward type of person and still want to try them, I recommend not calling their posted number which just routes you to a call center which always took 20-30 minutes to make an appointment due to their system always being "slow today". Call the champ himself, Mike, at the Post St. location: 415-248-3708. He gave me that unlisted number, so you're welcome.

My Daughter cut her chin and needed stitches on a Sunday night, so we headed here after being sent by a Sutter Health urgent care center. The ER was hopping and we waited over three, nearly four, hours for the stitches. I get it, my Child wasn't dying--other patients took priority. The doctor who eventually performed the stitches was nice and efficient. The whole procedure took 15, maybe 20 minutes start to finish. Nine stitches to be exact. The shocker was the bill for over $2700. That's the rate with Blue Shield insurance (we have a high deductible plan) and we're on the hook for the full amount. I asked them for a review of the bill because it seemed so high (couldn't be right, right?) but nope, they came back to confirm that that's exactly what it should have cost. To be clear, that's just the facility fee from CPMC's emergency room. The doctor's bill was a separate change. I shudder to think what the bill would be if you actually needed an x-ray or some sort of diagnostic work up. Anyway, proceed with caution and check your insurance--the rates are here are sky high with no justification. Just because they can.

Each and every one of them were friendly, professional, and knew exactly what each had to do for me (or is it to me?). The facilities was typical of a hospital, yucky. The operating room, which I walked into with nurse #4 was surreal and 10x scarier than a brain surgery scene performed by Dr. McDreamy on Grey's Anatomy. I had an entire minute to soak in the sterile room before the anesthesiologist turned me into sleepy town. But overall, I'm so grateful that I had a great surgeon with excellent health care workers. I definitely felt well cared for. I must admit, I watch way too many Korean soap operas and evil thoughts of dramatic things happening to me made me all the more nervous. My tip to you, don't watch Korean soap operas prior to surgery because NO, your body will not swapped out for another. Think happy thoughts and know that you are getting well taken care of at this hospital.
