    Back to UCSF - Wheeeeee!
    Arielle M.

I've been to the UCSF Radiology/Pain Mgmt clinic at China Basin on several occasions and so far each visit has been about as pleasurable as getting a needle stuck into your spine can possibly get hehe. Seriously, each person that helps me- from check-in, to triage/post-procedure observation, to the actual procedure itself, everyone has made my visits easy. Everyone is extremely nice and helpful and they go out of their way to make you feel like you're getting individualized care. Dr Javier Villanueva-Meyer oversees my epidural injections. He is super kind. He speaks with me both before and after the procedure. He has a very caring, gentle approach and explains everything in a way so that you understand. He also allows me to have a voice in my care, which I really appreciate. The clinic is quiet and not overflowing with patients. I've only seen one other patient at a time in the back area with me. So the flow is always smooth from start to finish. The parking is under the buildings and is extremely tight and difficult to navigate, especially if a rod hold your neck straight (like mine). So turning tight corners can be difficult, especially with a big car. Oh- UCSF validates parking so don't forget to bring your parking ticket up to check in with you

By the ballpark- but not as fun

The staff is top notch: Professional & kind. I barely felt them slip in the IV to administer contrast for the MRI. The only disappointment? No Netflix! No music! No frills at UCSF China Basin, that's a Mission Bay perk, darn it. Having been in a longtime study at UCSF and getting yearly state-of-the-art MRIs for free, I know the drill though I'm usually at the other radiology facility at Mission Bay. And when I have to lie in that MRI tube, binge-watching Breaking Bad or listening to a stream of 80s music, it makes the time pass very quickly. So if you have a choice, ask to get your MRI at Mission Bay and enjoy that flip down screen inside the MRI tube to watch some Netflix & chill. (Just don't forget to wear your contacts if you need them because anything metal like eyeglasses are a no-go: They'll fly across the room and attach themselves to the magnet.)

    IV stick

My experience with the radiology dept has been very good both times I visited but I'm gonna shout from the roof tops about a particular nurse Don N who administered prep care. I have had plenty of IV's inserted on the top of my hands and they always been painful and some with very bad bruising. I've developed anxiety and fear every time this is supposed to be happening. Nurse Don N prepared my hand in a way that no one ever tried, he positioned my hand in a manner that no one's ever done, and he talked me through it. The result a nearly painless IV stick( yes singular) and no bruising! I hope anyone who ever has had an awful experience with IV's in the hand gets the care they need without pain. Really- I think the hospital should have him do a training video it may make such a difference for the patients.

IV required for son's full MRI scan.

Extremely rude scheduling personnel over the phone. This is not how clients - who may be facing serious medical issues - should be treated.

The appointment only took about 15 minutes for me, I scheduled it on the same day and then pulled up 5 minutes before the appointment. Staff took care of me and helped me adjust my positioning to get the most accurate scan. I got my results within a few hours online and I saw a full breakdown of my fat percentage, lean mass, bone density, etc... I would say it was a good value for the price and you can find discount codes online if you do some research (or use an LLM). Parking is kind of a pain though.

I'll cut to the chase and tell you it was surprisingly accurate, and within the margin of error, although Dexa is the "gold standard." I won't bore you with the metrics but I will bore you with the experience. First off, the location for the mobile service has ample parking and was conveniently located. The mobile van was clean, the technician - Suhban Khan was very professional and knowledgeable. Like myself, he was also a fitness coach and had solid knowledge not only with Dexa but also the leading body composition measurement devices on the market and smart scales. We had a good chat and I interviewed him briefly for the YouTube channel. If you want to watch, here's the link: https://youtu.be/eJ9x2bf5QHA?si=sytHprsQ9ydwYn-R The scan took about 10 minutes time, with 6 minutes for the scan. You just wear light, loose clothing and lay back, while the scanner passes from your head to your feet. It moves a fraction every 30 seconds. The van was mostly quiet with ambient music - felt very much like any medical setting. Is this a necessary experience for everyone? No. For most people seeking general health I would recommend getting the good habits of proper nutrition, exercise and proper rest before worrying about getting a Dexa but...it will help keep you accountable to your goals and honestly, the subscription service is pretty affordable. I enjoyed my experience and will check in again in a few months.

For the second incident, I wasn't told it was cancelled until I checked with the front desk after sitting in the waiting room for 25 mins past my scheduled appointment time. Incompetency from top to bottom. Many customer reviews and several doctors I spoke to tell a similar story. The front desk staff of young Michael Smith, a young Latina woman and an Asian "concierge" act like detached, frightened children. Please note, pointing out their races is just for identification purposes. Before my most recent appointment, I spoke with the concierge about the need for the quieter open (vs. closed) MRI machine due to my noise sensitivity condition called hyperacusis, but she apparently didn't note the importance of that for the rest of the staff because one of their techs decided the image quality would not be sufficient which seemed to have led to my appointment getting canceled. It's a mystery why none of the front desk people could notify me before I arrived and sat in the waiting room for 45 minutes. I asked Michael for his supervisor/office manager's phone number which he was reluctant to give, first saying she wasn't onsite and "she's really busy", then giving me an email address with an incorrect letter in the name, confirming it even after I read it back to him letter by letter. After forwarding the message to info@simonmed.com as instructed in their reply to negative reviews, Brianna (not Brionna) Dolayo finally responded and at first seemed to want to help, but later flaked out on a phone appointment time we had agreed to. Unfortunately, they don't want to be accountable for the disorganized, incompetent mess of SimonDead. If you're a high risk, high reward type of person and still want to try them, I recommend not calling their posted number which just routes you to a call center which always took 20-30 minutes to make an appointment due to their system always being "slow today". Call the champ himself, Mike, at the Post St. location: 415-248-3708. He gave me that unlisted number, so you're welcome.

If you hate your job, maybe you shouldn't be the one checking in people. My check in experience was just terrible. I felt talked down to while the entire time this girl was so incompetent. I knew she was charging me incorrectly and I brought it up. However, seems she didn't really care and was getting annoyed. I was getting nowhere with her and obviously had to get the imaging done so I just had to suck it up. Never did she offer any info on how to contact billing until I asked. Next was the imaging order. Not sure why they don't have it already but I only have an electronic copy. So I mentioned that and asked if I can email it. Again she acted all snobby and acted as if I was asking the most obvious question. As if I knew the answer already on where to email it to vs uploading it into my user portal. As I was waiting, I noticed this terrible attitude given towards other check in patients. Everyone received that cold, snobby attitude. So I guess it was nice that I wasn't targeted, but she really should not be there if she has such a terrible attitude. Although I had an appointment, they weren't on time but at least this tech has way better manners. However, no one told me during the appointment booking or when I was confirming my appointment to come in without emptying my bladder and it was to be done right before imaging. Seems such important info if it was that critical for imaging, should really be known to patients beforehand. So guess what. I awkwardly tried to sit on the toilet trying to pee for a period of time cause every normal person goes at home before leaving the house. As I was finally done with my appointment. I noticed they changed people at the check in counter. This other girl seems way nicer and more patient with those checking in regardless if they are able to communicate or not due to a language barrier.

I was about 8 weeks and didn't have a doctor here, so my doctor in Chicago referred me to this center for an ultrasound. I called to see if they accepted my insurance, and they said they did. On the first visit, we didn't hear a heart beat, so naturally scheduled a follow-up for the following week, at which time we did hear one. On both visits, we did not see a doctor, just the technician, who performed the vaginal ultrasound and did not give us much information. She said she would give updates to my doctor in Chicago, who then called us with information. We switched insurance right after, due to the move and new job, and I found an OB here. At the same time, I got the bill from UCSF--$2K per ultrasound, for a total of $4K. The ultrasound had a bunch of tacked on costs, like doctor's fee (I'm guessing the tech showed it to a doctor there), facility fee, etc. Insurance said they would only cover half of each, so we're paying $2K out of pocket. To make it worse, USCF doesn't have an automated monthly billing option, so I have to log in every month which reminds me (hence this review--I just made a payment!). When we went to my first OB visit, he was going to perform an ultrasound, but I hesitated and asked how much it would cost. He said even if insurance didn't cover it, the cost would be about $300. (Insurance did cover it). This is mostly FYI for those of you that may be going there for a basic ultrasound or something, to know about the additional fees that get tacked on, which your insurance may decide not to cover. We would have been better off going to a doctor's office or something without insurance and paying out of pocket, rather than a research hospital/facility that has a lot of additional fees.
