Benjamin (the winemaker) is a mad scientist. It's a unique and rare experience to get the opportunity to chat directly with the winemaker about the process and vintages. Most of my wine cabinet consists of Silver wines. I especially like the Pinot noir rose (and of the pinkts actually), the Syrah and the cab franc. You also can't beat the price points! My hubby and I "discovered" Silver was on our vintners visa for the harvest weekend. How lucky were we to call and find that Benjamin Silver would be open all day Monday. A very small winery...one man production is a true gem. Call make an appointment. Take your time. The wines were all unique and flavorful. I personally loved the Chardonnay but the show stoppers were the "super Tuscan" and the the Syrah. The tasting room is NOT a super fabulous decorated space. It's about the wine. I'm writing this review because we just polished off the Port we bought during our visit. We enjoyed it because it wasn't too strong and there was a flavor of fig on the tail.This is a must visit if you're in the area because they do Italian style wines and they have a Port (it's so hard to find wineries that do Ports). This was a recommendation from the crew at Happy Canyon and I'm happy we followed through. The staff was friendly and the wines were great. I don't think I tried anything that I didn't like. The wines were priced just right, which made it really hard to pick a bottle. I'll definitely revisit and make this our first stop so we can get more bottles. read more

The wines were generally bitter that included a lean and tight pinot. The $15 tasting covered 6 wines that can be waived with $30 purchase. Wines were in the $30 to $60 per bottle range. I was so disappointed by this place. It was so pretentious. Don't put out a list of wine tasting and only have 4 wines open. So disappointing . Be upfront and just have a list with that is open. When we asked for wines on the list we were told they were not available for tastings. I love Santa Barbara, such a cute feel and wonderful small wineries. This is a hard to find spot that we only knew about because we were using our Santa Barbara wine passport. It's tucked away in an industrial looking area of Santa Barbara, pretty far away from the Urban Wine Trail in downtown. Nonetheless, the owner Ben is very friendly. He sat with us and literally took us through about a 45 minute tasting. Be sure to call ahead and see if you can get the tasting, as he is not 100% open for walk up tastings. he is a true connoisseur and expert.... he is the winemaker here. he even let us taste some of the wine that was aging in the storage area and explained what was to be added next to balance the taste. a truly unique experience and I really appreciated his expertise and details. read more

I am so glad that I stopped at this small single proprietor wine tasting room. Ben Silver was very accommodating informative and all-around great guy who I could tell really cares about his wine making grape growing and the entire process. A number of his wines are older vintages 2009 and 10's and have aged beautifully. I think that the wines are moderately priced for their quality. This is a great spot and I always make this a stop when wine touring friends from out of town. The wine is great however last time we were there we bought a bunch of bottles and ruined two opening them. The bottles cracked wide open rendering them undrinkable and when I stopped by later that week I was told we needed special openers. They kindly offered to throw my example bottle away but then just walked away. I checked with my friends who also purchased wine that day and no one recalls - the special opener clause - of our purchases. And it was our first stop of the day so we were all clear-minded at time of purchase. So if you plan to visit and BUY make sure you ASK how to open the wine or you will be watching $$$$ go down your drain like me. read more

What a gem this place is. Melissa and Joe were so friendly and welcoming. This winery is off the beaten path but well worth the visit. We were able to see this years crush in progress.
