Was at the restaurant on Saturday night. Reservation for 9:30, and it was SO loud inside. I had to yell to my companion for her to hear me. The only soft surface was the table cloth and the napkins - TERRIBLE for comfortable conversation.
Doug was the waiter, and he was fine -- at first. Great wine selection on his part, without question, based on his suggestion. We had some polenta with blue cheese (excellent), and the prosciutto with melon (excellent).
Bread is provided, and it comes with homemade pesto (anchovies are mixed in -- exceptional flavor) & olive oil. Simple, delicious.
We ordered the gnocchi and the homemade pasta special, which was a spinach fettuccini with sole and meatballs (meatballs were dry and salty, not that great) tossed in a simple tomato based sauce that was delicious and had a nice spice to it.
The gnocchi was exceptional - very light, mostly potato with a hint of flour to hold it together, it seems. In a delicious cream sauce that was light, as well. Unbelievable, would order it again and again.
Tiramisu was one desert selection we enjoyed. The other was a peach sorbet. and I need to touch on the wait person at this point. He was very good to start out with. But, we were only a table of 2, and behind us was a larger table with a larger bill (no doubt.) The waiter was very attentive to that other table for some time, and then he seemed to forget about that group -- as he also seemed to care less about my dining experience once our entrees were delivered. He would ask us how everything was, and then immediately turn away before an answer could be provided. I would start to talk to him, and he would already be engaged with the table behind me -- annoying. I had to physically grab him to get him to pay attention to me and hear what I was trying to say. :-(
At one point, I heard him tell the neighboring table that there was a peach sorbet available for dessert, and that it was so special because it was only available this time of year. When it was time for my table to order dessert, no peach sorbet was mentioned to us as being an option. I asked if he had sold out of it, and suddenly, he thought he might have one serving left. Well, he brought out this one scoop of sorbet that was so solidly frozen, I could have taken a chainsaw to it and made an ice sculpture out of it. I told the waiter it would be about 3 hours until it was softened enough to eat, and he just laughed and walked away. ?!?!?! How is that amusing, that I paid $7 for a dessert that I cannot eat? We took it home, and by the time we got it home, at least 40 minutes had passed from when it was brought to the table...and this thing was still as solid as concrete. Unbelievable.
Doug seemed to have developed the "late nite" waiter syndrome -- disappearing in the back of the house so he could clean up and get out of there for a date or something. He suddenly appeared at our table to remove our dinner plates that still had food on them. When he asked if he could take them, I had to reach across to take one of the last 2 gnocchi that was in the last of that amazing cream sauce, and my companion had to suddenly grab the remaining gnocchi, as well. Off went that plate with the sauce which would have been nice to dip the last bit of bread we had into it. He stood there and watched this whole thing go down, and still felt compelled to get these 2 dinner plates into the kitchen at that very moment. There were still other diners in the restaurant, so it wasn't like we were the last ones in the joint. Earlier, he also took our appetizer plates from us when they still had food on them. I told him not to take the food, and I found myself suddenly taking the food off the app plates and piling it on to the pesto side plate - really inappropriate service on his part.
I would reconsider going back on a weeknight, and I would request a different server. I would have to say the food seems to be very good across the board with reasonable pricing, but the hostess was lame, the waiter was marginal, and the atmosphere was extremely loud. Also, we kept smelling cigarette smoke -- not sure where it was coming from, but it was a huge buzz kill. There was great opportunity for overall improvement, without question. read more
