Gayle and I drive to the Bay Area (and back) from Genoa (Nevada) a number of times per year, and usually on US 50. We know our "pit stop" options which most often include the Silver Fork Store, Fresh Pond, and the West Sacramento Maverick station. As the California vs. Nevada per-gallon price differential, can be significant, we only buy gas in the Golden State when we have to. Hence, our Silver Fork stops are usually for snacks and a bio break. Hence, we pretty much skip the gas pumps and the restaurant, the latter being to early in the trip going down and "we just want to get home" coming back. Nice people, decent snacks, clean restrooms, and very interesting tchotchkes. For what we want, what more do we need? read more

Product Engine oil: This store is basically ripping people off because they're charging 20 dollars per quart of engine oil. It's pretty unreasonable, and they seem to be taking advantage of being located between two towns. Just a heads-up for anyone else shopping there! read more

Great place to get something to drink, or snack on while on your trek up Hwy 50, or stop to pick up something you forgot while camping as this store has alittle bit of everything. They also have reasonable gas prices. We camp off Silverfork road and this store has come in handy multiple times. The staff is super friendly each time we have come in. read more

Bearded young cashier is a mensch. Its a funky store w an assortment of everything from knives to ponchos. Prices are sick high, but then again it's Cal . Not for nothing, but an unusual local ( pickup truck driving short blonde dude w yellow lab )approached me outside w " im running for mayor ". I informed him that " im from Miami", but he insisted my geographical location was of no import. He then rolled out a www.YouTube remedy. I was in a rush , and didnt want to get bogged down, so I asked him for a card. He immediately deflated, said nothing, no " thanks anyway". He just proceeded into the store . Nuthing, zero acknowledgement.I walked away thinking " that man is a rude boy w no political chops. Bottom line= you never know whom youre talking to, and negative encounters go much deeper than positive. Politician wannabe needs to refine his game. Hed do well to watch how the 76 attendant inside handles people. Nobody likes to get chumped off, and were I a resident, Id find out who the guy's opponent is and write him/her out a check. read more

Being that I am a local, one would think I would be biased in my review. Not true. If it was a crappy place I would have no problem with withholding my stars. The store is well stocked with all kinds of things, besides snacks and drinks. If you need it chances are they may have it. I am thankful for this place due to the fact that I have to drive 30 minutes to get to the next store. The owners are very friendly and helpful.., as are the people they hire to fill in for them. Yes the prices are not what you would get if you went to Grocery Outlet, but this is a convenience, tourist kind of store, with not much around it until you reach a bigger town. Wonderful location for travelers. Nice bathroom, just when you need it. Owner was pleasant and friendly, which usually isn't the case at most convenience stores. Bathroom sign recommends 1$ donation for using the bathroom if you don't purchase anything. Well worth a dollar when the bathroom is private, and clean! I did make a purchase but would be happy to pay the dollar. Store had good selection of snacks and beverage. They even had some Knick knack souvenirs. We stopped here on the way up to Lake Tahoe. We were thirsty and needed a snack. It's also a gas station, so that comes in quite handy. They have lots of souvenirs which only adds to the experience. The only bad thing I could think of was the lady at the counter was quite surly. Not very nice. The prices are high but hey what would one expect? During the fire this week they closed HWY 50, and then reopened it to one way traffic only. Doing this was appropriate given the need to put out the fire, but a significant side effect for those waiting was an unplanned bladder stress test. Now, if you were like us, and returning from a wine tasting day, it could be and incredibly painful and unplanned test. I happened to be with three women, and so one of them was much more stressed than the rest of us, and so the Silver Fork Store and Gas was a great option. They had a restroom and, I was told, there were only two people in front of our most stressed person. So, all I know for sure is that they've got a restroom and they sell ice cream, as two people in our group emerged with an ice cream of some sort. This deserves a five star review. You've got to love a place with a clean public restroom. read more

Stopped in here 5/5/12 (Cinco de mayo!!) We were headed to South Lake for a day trip to surprise a friend on his bday since a bunch of people had come up here to celebrate. Our spontaneous decision to drive the 3 hours meant leaving the house without using the restroom. We got about an hour out of Tahoe and here we are, stopping at this place so I can run in really quick. It was going to be an in and out kind of thing but when I was about to run back to the car I saw my fiance was inside shopping. He pulled me over to this cool glass display case and we laughed at the random stuff inside. But then!!! There it was! The world's most awesome birthday gift ever. We debated several minutes before deciding to spend $25 on this gift. We even tried to haggle at the register. Not happening. What was it?, you ask... Well!! It was this awesome statue of a woman on her hands and knees, full anatomy of all parts carved right into it. Unique, funny, 100% pure awesome. Thanks Silver Fork Store. SAD NEWS UPDATE: The statue is lost. The top review is great. My experience was a bit better. On the way to Sierra, it was time for a bathroom break. When we walked in there was already a line of people waiting for the restroom. i saw all the signs that the previous reviewer submitted photos of. I really liked those statues. Some very funny ones. You will see how some people positioned some of the statues to hint some sexual innuendo. The person running the store at this time was Asian. He didn't really seem to care. He seemed to be handling all the vehicles who may need chains. I did donate $0.25 into the little container on the bathroom door. I'm sure there will be a day that there is a sour worker who will enforce all the signs. They are the only gas station on this road for quite a few miles. This place gets crowded with people just wanting to use the bathroom. If it was my business I would probably get upset as well if people only stopped to use the bathroom. On plus side, the place is stacked with snacks. Also if you need some last minute equipment. They have plenty variety of gloves and other accessories. I only gave 3 stars because the signs gave you a hint that one of they days you will be a victim of them being anal to you, and on this day we were just lucky. read more

This little gas station has one problem. The septic system leach lines could not be extended since they would then be too close to the American River. So sadly the septic tanks have to be pumped out and the shit hauled down the hill for processing. That is why they charge a dollar to use the restrooms. So pay the dollar or shit your pants.... or pay the dollar and complain on Yelp. That's the ticket... read more

One Word : Pay Up We've stopped at this little gas station/convenience store many times on our way up to and back from Tahoe throughout the year. The owners are pretty much the nicest people we've ever met and always greeting us with smiles and small banter. This is the first or second (depending where you are coming from) gas station for filling up so it gets packed quite often. For gas purchasing patrons the public restroom is a savior for some, we noticed quite a few losers piling in then leaving without at least purchasing something OR leaving a $1 donation as per marked on the door. Instead of being a cheap-ass or just downright rude, how about picking up a bag of Cheetos and hot chocolate for the ride into Tahoe? If you have the need for trinkets and souvenirs, fear no more. The other 1/4 of the store is stocked with tourists in mind. The last time we went were headed into Tahoe for the snow we unfortunately forgot our gloves so it was a good thing that this store was even open at 7:00am! For those out of luck such as ourselves, this store saved us sincethey carried gloves/mittens as well as a big wall of caps and other necessities for those with snow sports on the mind. Great spot/location, great couple/staff, and great rest stop for those looking to fill up before hitting the slopes. For all the other weirdos who either can't read English or choose to ignore the sign on the restroom door (and I doubt who even travel abroad), best of luck using bathrooms in Europe ;-) read more

Never stop here. Avoid this station at all costs! One star is generous. My 9 year old daughter and I stopped so she could have a restroom break. I saw the "$1 or buy something" sign on the door and said I'd get us something and we asked the nasty and rude woman behind the counter for the key. She refused because I hadn't actually bought anything yet. (note that she didn't actually speak, just shook her head no) This was even as I was getting beverages out of the cooler. I left them and told them I would never buy anything there again with that kind of attitude. This place used to be cool, run by different people a few years back before it was a 76 station. The gas prices were cheaper and the bathrooms were free. We drove on down to Fresh Pond Chevron and had clean restrooms, friendly staff, and gas about the same price. Cheap gas prices compared to Fresh pond and Lake Tahoe. Gas was 3.99 for 87 here while Fresh pond was 4.29 and Lake Tahoe was 4.37 Yes this is a hole in the wall as far as gas stations go. I imagine they charge for the restroom since it probably is not connected to the sewer do to its remote location, it probably has a septic tank! read more

Fuel prices are fair. Store well supplied. Best part is a large bathroom kept clean and available to everyone. A donation is requested (not required) if you don't purchase, which is more than worth having a place to stop between Tahoe and the valley. read more

THis is a Unocal 76 gas station with a conveniece store. We stopped here to use the restroom and to stock up on some junk food on our way home from snowboarding in tahoe. My 3 girl cousins had walked in first because they needed to use the restroom but as soon as they passed the cashier all you can hear was "you need to buy something to use the restroom".. She automatically assumed they werent there to buy anything.. Right away we could tell she was rude! I then told the cashier I was going to buy some snacks and what not and we asked for the key for the restroom. She said "hold on for me one minute.." I wanted to throw my shoe at her at this point but then I saw the sign behind her that said, "you break you buy". I was thinking of just buying a 25 cent gum just to piss her off even more but I really wanted some chips. So after I paid for a 1.00 bag of cheetos I thanked the cashier and cheerfully said "you should smile more often. Life is alot better when living with a smile on your face"... She told me "you should get more educated.".. AHHAHAHAHA... shes funny. Anyways, never go here! Her business deserves to be closed down with rude customer service. She also has a 3.00 minimum on credit/debit. I appreciated her rudeness though because it raised my blood pressure high enough to drive our 3 hour drive home. read more

Note: they only have a truck come up once a day, last gas station to Tahoe for about 30+ miles. On that note, we were coming down from Tahoe and had neglected to refill down at Lira's, and the Rover, in its gas-guzzling nature, had a range of 0 miles for five miles before pulling up to 76. To our dismay, the station had no gas, as did we. But we couldn't even start the car with the stark dry tank, so we pleaded our case with the owner of the station. He directed us to the next one, 13 miles south, but soon saw our plight and began looking himself for some gas to get us to the next station. He brought a jerrycan from his own home and gave us a gallon - just enough for us to get to the next station. Didn't even charge us for his own gas that we used. So grateful! read more

There are a lot of interesting little towns on 50 up the way to Tahoe. I don't usually go this way but when 80 gets closed down due to blizzard conditions, you do what you gotta do to get to that powder. A pit stop and a drink/snack are all you need here but if worst cases, you can pick up chains, gloves, and other "Stuck in the woods" supplies. read more

My car broke down here and collectively we spent well over 50 bucks here on food, gas, a $20 gas canister and more. They don't even have a tap for your water bottle. After all that, clearly you know we're stranded here in below 18 degree weather. All I can say is that this is a lifesaver! Running at 5 mph for almost 5 Fing hours in snow and traffic, we were out of our wits! We badly needed a pit stop and this came out like a prayer answered! So almost everybody stuck in the same traffic stopped here. The pumping area got crowded, and the one restroom had a queue. Sign says something like "Restroom for customers only. Purchase something or give a $1 donation." While in line for the bathroom, look out for the kinky wood carvings and have a laugh! read more
