SO MUCH POTENTIAL!!!!!!! The ambiance was amazing, unlike anything I've seen in NR. It's like a seedy, gothy, divy, weirdo handout. All things I love. However, things all of a sudden halted for me the 2nd the bartender told my date they had to order something despite me ordering a $15 cocktail. My immediate thought was to say, "Okay, we'll be on our way then." I didn't like that my date was pressured into ordering something. THEN she hits us with "cash only." Ugh. The cocktails. She was majorly pushing these concoctions she'd made up and said every single cocktail was $15, so we might as well go with the boozier one (as opposed to what we wanted which was something simple like gin & tonic), so we relented. Omg!! So we walked into SILKIES's after a movie night .. sometimes around midnight!!! And we were blown away!! Silkie is the best hostess. I have been hundred of bars. This is amazing environment. Stopped in after a wedding reception, easily one of the best bar experiences I've had in NYC I'd recommend a visit on off hours.

I don't even Yelp and this place was so bad that it made me make an account. This was by far the creepiest and most uncomfortable bar I've ever been to. The owner/bartender forces you to take a picture for her fb page that she reels endlessly on a screen in the bar. There was no music and only two people in the bar when we walked in. She jokingly told us the drink was "poison" after we drank it, which was creepy. There's porn in the bathrooms. She was very pushy and we got out of there as soon as we finished our first drink. First of all most of the people that come here are underage. Second she tries to force you to order her original drink "Rumba" and then forces you to leave a tip. If you don't tip her she posts a close up of your face on her instagram. Third, anything you try to play or touch she has to tell you her "rules" and looks at what your doing every second (not allowing you to actually enjoy). She also forces you for a picture on her phone which she posts on her instagram to make it look like she has patrons. Don't come here. I am still angry over the fact that Silkie constantly takes photos of her costumers for promotion and popularity on Instagram. 3 years ago I happened to be one of the costumers, and she took a photo of me while I was playing billiards. Mind you, I already told her to not take pictures of me. The photo she took is fucking terrible. I am large and disgusting, my haircut looks uneven, and the lighting is terrible. For three years I begged and implored her to take the photo down because I got into trouble with my conservative parents. She said, "No, it's my account and I decide what I want to keep or not." All right, I guess you don't care about people's privacy, nor safety? I also don't like how hostile she is about purchasing her expensive yet shitty drinks and leaving a large sum of tip. Silkie's is by far the best place I've been to in a bar since Ohio University (my college days, and we know how to get down) and I mean this by saying that feeling of nostalgia. It's unique. One of a kind. No other like it. Issa vibe. Once you walk in off the streets it's like stepping off into Narnia...but Silkie's version. Lol. Also! Make sure you grab a Rumba Punch (multiple flavors!) - I got the Lemonade [i feel like mine was better than his...literally taste like NO ALCOHOL IN IT...BEWARE lol] my friend got the Apple one. This is the best bar in town! Don't go expecting the ritz but leather couches and a fireplace you can't mess this up on a winters night. Came in from the cold and it's been the best night. She's a really mean old lady that doesn't know how to run a business. She sells this rum punch and I gave a sip to my friend to try it. Silkie screamed at me that im not allowed to give my friend a sip because she will "lose money." What kind of bar doesn't let you give your friend a sip of your drink? Believe me when I say the negative reviews are not exaggerated. Last night was my second- and last time there. As everyone stated, she does take pictures of you almost immediately as you walk in- insists even if you DON'T want your picture taken. The bar was completely empty both times we were there, but we decided to stick around for a drink. My bf was putting songs in the juke box and he put on a few classic Latin songs and she ACTUALLY said "Make sure you put some American music in there too" we couldn't believe she was telling us what music to play! I came here months ago and decided not to write about my disturbing experience. Since I know how hard it is for small business owners. But to this day I cannot shake the experience I had here. Upon walking in, I noticed it was dead. It wasn't the vibe I was going for, there were about two older men at the bar. I sit down and I'm immediately pressed by the owner, "you look like you've never been to a bar before." When my bewilderment stemmed from it being a DEAD bar with only two older creepy men and not sure If I even wanted to be there. She starts giving me all of her rules. She lets me know before taking my ID of the repercussions of it being fake or not. She lets me know how her spot is so "Exclusive." She apparently turned down lots of people who she simply doesn't like the vibe of. Must explain why her business was dead. She brags about her 8 husbands. When you order a drink, she says "tipping isn't only a city in China" which I didn't understand. But apparently she means , tip me which I find weird for someone in the hospitality industry to outright ask. She just made her tip suffer with that stupid ass joke. She takes pictures of you and posts on her social media so people can think she's popping on a night that is actually dead. I didn't want to take the pictures but she would've probably kicked me out. But now that I think of it, that would've been the best thing. This woman is so nosey and in your business. I don't imagine anyone to want to go to a bar and have a grandma judging you the whole time trying to be snarky and cool. I had ordered a few different drinks. I would rate this place 0 stars if I could. I personally was extremely excited to go here for the first time, I love places with a personality and I love supporting small businesses. Me and my friends got the Rumba Punch. My friend gave our other friend a sip of the drink to try (as people do when they're out with friends) and it became a monumental issue. Silkie said to my friend that it's a $30 drink that we got for $15 (it was absolutely not a $30 drink ), and by giving a friend a sip, she's giving away this drink for $7.50 and then asked my friend if she was capable of understanding the math, and snapped at her saying "if you don't like it you can finish your drink and leave". I personally don't understand that logic but I can sympathize with how difficult it can be to run a small business, but if Silkie's delivery wasn't so disrespectful i'm sure that my friends would have stayed and given her the business that she clearly needs. My friend and I were stunned at what was happening, she kept engaging with us so we regrettably stayed longer than we should. Silkie noticed that I was very uncomfortable and kept asking me what was wrong, so me and my friend tried to go to the bathroom to figure out how to get out of this weirdness without making a scene. She followed us to the bathroom, asked us why we took our drinks with us because "nobody was going to roofie us" as if any young girl is going to just leave her drink at the bar. Silkie is an absolute sweetheart, who runs her own business herself with no help from anyone. That being said, this place is not for the faint of heart. If Silkie does not like your energy, you'll know & she won't put up with you. This is not a place to go for the faint of heart, or if you're someone who ridiculous standards. You have to wait your turn because Silkie is both bartender & chef. She doesn't have an extensive menu of food, but what she makes is delicious (the wings & jalapeño poppers are amazing). As for her famous Rumba punch, they are both strong & delicious. Silkie told me that the only sugar in her Rumba punch is in the Rum itself--no added sugar! Which is fantastic because I can't consume too much sugar (& I've yet to get a hangover after coming here). To anyone who says her drinks aren't strong, you're sadly mistaken. This is not a place for close-minded individuals; this is not a family restaurant (duh). This place is empty most of the time's I've went. The drinks are okay and the prices aren't too bad. The owner "seems" nice but can get really nasty sometimes. Personally I've never had a problem with her but she has made some really unnecesarry snide remarks to my friends and even kicked several of them out for really dumb reasons. A friend and I went to Silkie's in February of last year. Although Silkie was a bit eccentric, she was very sweet with us, and recovering from a foot injury, she cooked us some chicken wings. They were by far the best chicken wings I've ever had, and I believe my friend feels the same way. And I'm a chicken wing-eating mofo!! The bar was kind of empty, and yes, she asked to take our picture but she made sure that we knew she was going to put it on the display. We didn't care.
