This is the newest coffee shop on Solano avenue and I was looking forward to trying it. I went close to their closing time on a weekday and luckily found parking right infront. It is a small establishment and it is easy to drive by if you dont know the coffee shop is there. I tried the hot chocolate as I am taking a break from caffeine. I was very disappointed with what I got- lukewarm milk with a mild hint of chocolate. 2/10. I would not recommend this drink at all, not for the $. I hope the coffee is better than this.. read more

This is my new spot on Solano which was sorely needing some fancy coffee and pastries (and protein). The breakfast sandwich slaps. Angelia recommended I try the empanada sauce to pair with it, which was a strong move. The English muffin is buttery, crispy on the outside, perfectly chewy. Lindsay made me a fresh cup of coffee and was conversational and warm while it brewed. Goes a long way when someone communicates like that about a (short) wait. Great service, great vibe, high quality brew and grub. I will be back and expect this place will really start to get a following. read more

My nutritionist has me dialing back my morning pastry options, so I can't comment on those, but their coffee is sublime! The staff seems to share shifts with another Berkeley location maybe, but they are all awesome. It takes a bit longer to get a coffee that is crafted with some attention to details, but I appreciate them taking the time to make it as good as possible. That block of Solano is pretty easy to park on, there's a nice chocolate store adjacent. A cool spot I suggest you check out!! read more

So happy we have a new coffee shop in town! The coffee is good and they have options like Vietnamese Iced Coffee, matcha, and an ube latte! The added bonus is their pastry selection- awesome donuts and sweets from Souled Out Pastries as well as from Starter and Crispian Bakery! Get the peach kouign amann and any of the donuts because they are delicious. They also serve Boichik Bagels so why wait an hour for those at their regular location? All in all, will definitely be coming here more and developing cavities soon. read more

A nice small coffee shop in the neighborhood close to a Starbucks and Peet's we visit. We gave it a shot, twice. I want to love this place, but it's unfortunately not the best. My wife says the matcha had a soapy taste to it. However, she loved the everything bagel with the green chile cream cheese. I went to get drip coffee with my own reusable 16oz cup on two visits and both times I was charged the Berkeley cup surcharge. Berkeley's disposable cup surcharge is intended to have consumers use reusable cups; not sure if this coffee shop is aware. Both Starbucks and Peet's waive the Berkeley surcharge in addition to giving you a small discount using your own reusable cup. The first time I went to get drip the barista gave me a dark roast without asking/finishing my order. They were busy, so I understand. My 2nd visit I made sure to get the holiday roast (light or medium roast) and it was reasonable. Wait times for this coffee shop is on the longer side. It's a busy and popular place, however small. The side walk gets crowded. It's worth a visit and we'll probably be back for bagel and drip. However for the majority of our coffee runs, we'll be sticking with Peet's. read more

Nice little neighborhood cafe in an area that is otherwise dominated by Peet's and Starbucks. They make every effort to serve and cater to the neighborhood. They serve Boichik Bagels, as well as other good-quality goodies. If you haven't tried it yet, take a visit. You're bound to enjoy it. read more

I have tried latte at Highwire, Sournevir, Starbucks, Peet's and Phil's. I am your latte guy! Signal is the best! I like the nutty creamy flavor of the coffee which formed the base of the latte and went very well with milk. The chai was also amazing. They allowed you to have extra spicy in case you want a kick to your chai. read more

Apologies in advance - But this coffee is not for everyone. I like the shop layout and those pastries and bagels look pretty good but my latte was not drinkable. By that I literally mean it required "tuning" and I couldn't tune it so I could drink it. I did drink about a third but I had to go elsewhere to get a latte. If you are in the "char style" latte camp this place is for you! They do make an uber roasted expresso - sorta like Italian roast but yeah, roasted a bit more. I'll never understand it but their clientele obviously likes their lattes with notes of charcoal and cigarette ash. Dunno, maybe that's a little harsh, but that was my experience. read more

Medium to light roasts, single origin beans, hand thrown mugs and an assortment of pourover equipment for sale, no hot food, just curated partnerships with local pastry makers, minimal seating indoors, classic espresso-based drinks, cold brew in addition to iced coffee, a nominal offering of sweeter or chocolatey drinks, millennial friendly potted plants, branded T-shirts and dad caps, you know the 3rd wave deal by now. This is our new favorite coffee spot in Berkeley! We go all the time because the coffee is outstanding - it's super smooth with a ton of flavor. On top of that, they have a really nice selection of pastries and breakfast options - Boichik bagels along with a tasty breakfast sandwich. It has everything you need to get your day started off right. The staff has always been incredible friendly as well. My husband, 3 yr old son and I went here on Sunday for a Sunday pick me up. This location was turned into such an adorable coffee shop, but a little sterile feeling. We love to try more mom and pop/local shops, cafes and restaurants instead of spending our money at corporations like Starbucks. I was so disappointed on the tastes of these coffees. My husband had the Vietnamese iced coffee, my son had a kids hot chocolate and I had the Mexican mocha. Let me tell you these drinks were not worth the $6 for each drink. My husbands drink was so strong but had good flavor. My son said his hot chocolate was not very yummy and when i tried before the lid popped off and he spilled it on the side walk was bland. My Mexican mocha, which I, a non-coffee drinker was so excited for, was a major disappointment!! It had literally no flavor of a mocha or spice to create that Mexican mocha. I could not give more than a star for the drinks and inconsistency of it tasting good. But I do Love that they offer pre-made gluten free baked goods from mariposa as someone who also has celiac disease. Will I be back? Probably not. It is not worth the cost. read more

I was looking forward to a new coffee shop closer to my house, near the top of Solano. They have an interesting selection of pastries. Unfortunately I've been underwhelmed with three espresso drinks each time I've come here. My tongue will spend the day recovering from an over hot ube latte I had today. They need to train their baristas to not make the foam too hot ( and maybe some latte art while they are at it ;). I was absolutely correct in assuming that their espresso coffee and tea drinks would be superior to Peets and Starbucks (both of which I've given up on as their $7+ Lattes are so inferior these days). So I'm extremely happy to have discovered 'yes, I can get a superb chai latte while walking on Solano' here at Signal where the snacks and accessories are handmade artisan brands as well. Always a good cup of coffee here and a short wait time. I love that the door is usually open because it's welcoming, it creates ventilation, and it's easy to get in and out when I'm carrying multiple cups. Baristas do a good job suggesting what will work if you need a customization or you're trying something new. The coffee and tonic is refreshing and not many shops offer that combo. Try it! I like my coffee black and unsweetened but my tummy can't always handle the acid. I wish they offered nonfat milk for the times I branch out and have a latte but their plant milk offerings definitely do the trick. read more

The nicest manager, baristas, and the caffeine zing is fantastic! So, I came in today after the storm that blew out the power all over Berkeley, despite being crowded the manager wasn't rushed and chatted with me about how much I loved the coffee last time. When it came to pay, their touchless card reader was down due to the power outages. He immediately comped my order. Wow. If you like darker roasts and espresso drinks, it's a great bet. Generally high quality. For an ostensibly third-wave coffee shop, not having a light roast available is an odd choice, and I'd love to see pourover (which I know can be tricky for a small shop). But there's nearly no seating, and if it's raining almost none. Not a good bet for working, but a neighborhood change of pace. read more

I live in the neighborhood and was very excited to see a local alternative to Starbucks and Peets. My hope is that Signal can thrive on Solano and pull business away from the chain shops. But...there's room for improvement. Thought I'd offer some ideas here. PROs: *Terrific location *Nice clean outdoor seating (although more might be needed as they start to get more business) *Water bowl for the dogs :) *The shop itself is clean and tidy Room for improvement: *Biggest concern - really expensive! $4.75 for an *adequate* latte (more on this) is too much. *My latte was...meh. I mean, it was fine, but certainly no improvement over Starbucks/Peets. (The local competition.) I'd be happy to pay a higher price for really good coffee, but this didn't stand out. Maybe I was unlucky this time? *The inside shop is not so inviting. It's a bit sterile and lacks soul. I get that it's early days, but giving this some thought would be great. A good start would be some fun music! *The layout of the shop is a little challenging too. (This was also true when it was the Brazilian Bread shop.) Employees seem hidden in the back and it's hard to make eye contact. It's hard to overcome the challenges, but just be aware that customers want to be able to engage with cafe staff so that it can feel like a neighborhood hang-out. My ideal: *Either spectacular coffee (preferred!) or a more modest price *Fun music and an artsy interior *More outdoor seating so that it isn't always completely full *A place where employees get to know the names and preferred orders of regulars Welcome to the neighborhood! Coffee is always subpar, I continue to give them chance after chance to get better. This time I ordered a pastry, the gal at the counter would not hand it to me until the tip was entered, not trying to run out without tipping, this made me VERY uncomfortable especially because from the moment I entered she was staring at me, continuing to make eye contact and watch me. There is nothing to steal in this establishment, I WILL NOT return to a place that watches me like I'm a criminal. I'm a young working female professional.
