It was ok, but I specifically told the staff that I did not need refraction (to purchase new glasses) and sure as you know, they tried to charge me for it when I checked out. I was there for a diabetic eye exam and to check on a YAG laser procedure I was told I might need. It was the way it was done that I objected to. The technician did not identify her role and did not say that if she did an exam, she would be charging me. They had me do a whole bunch of stuff and frankly I don't know what was supposedly the refraction. The ophthalmologist did many of the same things. I got the impression that money was the big priority in this office. read more

I had an appointment which I made last September for this September 2025, and when I got to the office in Whiting New Jersey the office was closed and possibly open only one day a week. I do not appreciate not being called and told about the closure I found it to be irresponsible on the part of the staff. I also spoke with the girl on the phone and asked her if there was a manager or someone higher up that could give me a call with an explanation. She said she would have the manager call... as of this date in writing this review I have not heard back from anybody from the office, and if they did call they did not leave a message. I have been going to Dr. Athwal for more than 7 years. I was sent there by my reg. Eye Dr. in Point Pls. b/c I needed a Specialist due to my Corneas being scratched & possibly scared from wearing Contact Lenses. I am a 70 year old who recently finished cataract surgery on both eyes. Dr B Athwal was friendly, knowledgeable, explained the options well. He has an efficient and well managed team of nurses, technicians , and clerical staff. Everyone seemed to be high energy, yet patient with their older patients. I've been patient at Athwal Eye Associates for 14 years with out any complaints until this past year. The front desk staff is exceptionally rude. If you ask them why you can't use your medical insurance and your vision plan together as a primary and secondary insurance, they are not able to provide you with a proper explanation but yell in your face and tell you that you can't do that and if you don't like it, make separate appointments for vision test and eye dilation. EXCUSE ME! ? First of all, I AM NOT HARD OF HEARING and fully comprehend! Why should I have to do that for a full, comprehensive eye exam that can all be accomplished in the same visit? The last time I went, I had a follow up appointment for my AMD and they insisted I had an appointment for a full vision exam. So they did both exams and didnt allow me to use the vision insurance benefits as a secondary. It would have covered most of the cost for the dilation exam except for 10 dollars instead of paying 40 dollars full out of pocket cost for dilation plus a 40 dollar co pay for a specialist visit. I spoke to them about it at checkout. I was told- "too bad thats why you are asked about your insurance when you walk in". Is that anyway to professionally address your patients? I wasn't asked. I was only asked if my insurances were the same since last my last visit. There is a sign in the lobby when you walk in that states it is your responsibility to inform them of your insurance and to let them know if you have VSP which I do. Sounds like a money grab to me because I wind up paying a bigger co pay when done that way. No one wants to even make eye contact with you when they are speaking to you from the desk. Such a display of disrespect. If you do that to people like me who are middle aged, how badly do you treat the elderly who are the majority of your patients? If you hate your job that much, quit and get another one. There are plenty of them out there. I am leaving this review because I never made a follow up appointment and I'm getting phone and email reminders to do so. WHO THE HELL WANTS TO GO BACK TO YOU AFTER BEING TREATED LIKE THAT?! It's a shame though because Dr Lisa and Dr. Neal are my doctors and they are great people. I have no complaints about them. Not honest. Not ethical. This guy's a con man. Went for a cataract consultation and saw Dr. Harjit Athwal, or "Dr. Harry", as he is affectionately called by the staff. If you're new to the world of cataract surgery, let me fill you in on the drill. If you have health insurance or Medicare, that will usually cover a "basic" lens implant. All the eye Drs. will try to sell you on one of several "premium lenses" on the market that should provide you with a better range of vision' The catch is that insurance won't cover the extra cost for this "premium lens". I've been quoted $3,000 - 3,750 per eye EXTRA out of pocket above what insurance pays for one of these lenses. Apparently, what insurance pays isn't enough to keep these guys in the lifestyle to which they have become accustomed. That's why they all try to sell you on the upgrade. Some, like this Dr. Harry guy, sound just like used car salesmen, only with fancier plaques on the wall than "salesman of the month". Now, I am in sales myself, so I realize the difference between misrepresentation and persuasion. But that's the system here, a good lens replacement will cost you mucho $, even if you have insurance. Welcome to America! My point of contention with Dr. Harry is NOT the extra charge (they all do this). He knew I was talking to other Drs, and he tried to FOOL me into believing he's cheaper than the other guys. Yea, did I mention he reminded me of a used car salesmen? You see when they perform the surgery, they can make the incision by hand or by what's called an Femtosecond Laser. The FS Laser, as it's called, is state of the art and much more accurate, as attested to by all 6 of the other ophthalmologists that I've been to. Dr. Harry quoted me a price of $3,250 per eye for the premium lens. This included a cost of $600 for the use of the FS Laser, which every other Dr. said was the way to go with a premium lens. But not Dr. Harry, he was pushing me to have him do the incision by hand "because I'm so good". This would bring his price down to $2,650, well below the other guys. All the other eye Drs I spoke with either laughed or rolled their eyes when I recounted that Dr. Harry said he could do the operation by hand as well as the laser. Finally, I had an appointment with the ophthalmologist next door to him. And when I shared this anecdote, he laughed, and said that Dr. Harry doesn't have his own FS Laser, so he RENTS the use of the laser from the surgery center. It suddenly became very clear. It cost Dr Harry to rent the laser, probably less than $600 ( since I assume he marks that up), but still a substantial amount. So if he cuts out the laser, he can low ball his price and he loses little or no money! WOW He makes the same $$ with an inferior procedure, and the only one who loses is me. And keeping in character, this is the only place I've been to for a cataract evaluation, where they charged an extra $40 (not covered by standard medical ins) for an regular eye exam (I wasn't there for glasses) in addition to the cataract evaluation. There are too many good eye doctors in Toms River area to even consider this place. read more

Just had cataract surgery on my left eye. I have to give a lot of credit for the procedure and the way the prep was organized. It is now 3 weeks post op and I was just fitted for glasses. My Medicare is taking cxare of part of the expense for the glasses.. The staff has been very accommodating and professional.. i would recommend this practice 100%. read more

I just had cataract surgery on both eyes. Many people told me what to expect, but the treatment I received from Athwal (both the regular office and the surgical center) was unbelievable. There wasn't one person there who annoyed me in any way -- and that's an achievement! Seriously, they are a top-notch organization and I'm so glad I went there. (I don't know what place this guy Julius is talking about, but my experience with them was the exact opposite of his.) If I had to stretch for something negative to say, it would be the amount of waiting time until you get to see the doctor. One time I was there for 2 hours. But that happens with most doctors' offices, and it's a small price to pay for terrific service and results. You've only got 2 eyes in this lifetime, and I feel mine are in good shape thanks to Dr. Harry and his staff. read more

Had cataract surgery in both eyes performed by Dr. Harry Athwal. Procedures went well with good results and no complications. Surgery center runs very smoothly and organized. Dr. Harry takes time with you to discuss options and any questions. I had wanted to get one of the lens options that would have out-of-pocket costs. However, due to an irregular astigmatism, Dr. Harry did not feel the upgrade would provide the desired results, and we proceeded with the basic lens implant covered by Medicare. I can see further and clearer than I have in over 40 years. Next step is to be fitted for contacts to give me clearer closeup vision (mono vision), which I had been doing previously, but with compromised distance and clarity due to cataracts. Entire staff was very professional, courteous and patient throughout the multiple appointments. Would highly recommend this ophthalmology and eye surgery group. read more

I am very pleased with my Cataract surgery from Dr. Harry Athwal. I am a Pediatrician, and I understand that insurance does not always pay for the latest advancements available to patients. I was explained all my options from Dr Harry, and was happy to choose an option to get a delux lens along with an Astigmatism correction to give me the best vision without the need for glasses. I was also offered the option for Laser Catarct Surgery and Dr. Harry went over that option in detail, but I decided on manual cataract surgery. I understood that these options are an out of pocket expense. I would highly recommend my family and friends to Athwal Eye Associates for their cataract surgery or vision needs. From the start, I was impressed with the promptness of each appointment and timely visit. You are taken into various rooms for different tests and each technician comes in promptly, performs the test(s) then Dr. Tony comes in for his exam and consultation. This system works as it eliminates waiting and I was usually done with tests, exam with Dr. Tony, payment and making my next appointment all within 30-40 minutes. Dr. Tony explained procedure, lens options and cost. The last thing I wanted to do was wear glasses and spend money on glasses for the next 20+ years so I opted to upgrade to the best lens despite the fact my insurance would not cover the upgrade. The best lens eliminates the need for distance and reading glasses. I was scheduled on May 3rd, 2018 with Dr. Tony Athwal for left cataract surgery and my last post op was on June 4th, 2018. I received kind, friendly and caring treatment from the entire staff at both the Eye and Surgical Centers. Next door is the surgical center, again kind, caring and friendly staff putting me completely at ease. Surgery was absolutely painless and the following day after surgery, I was able to read without my 3.00 readers!! A week after surgery I threaded a needle for the 1st time in 12 years. I couldn't believe it. A month has passed and I'm still in awe at what I can see. No more readers on top of my head 24/7. Oh, and no more missing turns as I can once again read street signs and that's just with my left eye. I can't wait for my right cataract surgery scheduled for Sept to see "equally" well.
