I have been going to Ocean Eye Institute for a few years and have had nothing but a good experience. Whenever I had a question and called the office I found the staff courteous and helpful and always provided me with an answer. Dr Lautenberg did my eye surgery . I felt at ease and think he is one of the best doctors around to do this surgery. Blepharoplasty. I look and feel great!!! Unfortunately, this visit was a complete waste of my time after about an hour wait all they did was give me a new eyeglass prescription that did not even provide all of the information I requested or needed to order glasses. I went there as I am a diabetic for an annual follow up and expected an actual exam to which I waited longer in the waiting room that I was actually being seen. It felt like an assembly line where all they really cared about was getting patients through as fast as they could with his little Service provided as necessary as needed. I'll never be going back and I wouldn't waste my time personally. I received a more in-depth exam that provided more quality information from LensCrafters last year from this place today. Edit: November 2024. I went to lensCrafters in Toms River and was given a full exam and a new prescription. I had my original prescription from years ago, my prescription from Ocean eye Institute, and my prescription that they gave me that day. My original prescription and my new prescription from LensCrafters were the same and my prescription from Ocean eye Institute was drastically higher. Now I know why the glasses I had using that prescription have been giving me a headache for the past year. It's really unfortunate. That's a little bit that Ocean eye Institute did for me was so drastically wrong. The numbers are very close. It should've been a red flag for a prescription to get that much worse in one year. But as I said, I don't think the staff or doctor really cared at all all they cared about, was clearing the waiting room and getting more patient through for more billable hours. This is a classic example of quantity over quality. I know they won't do anything about it and don't care at all but it's really unfortunate that amount that amount of time plus a $40 co-pay plus $412.30 for a pair of prescription Oakley sunglasses that are now trash. The prescription from ocean eye institute was double my prescription since I started wearing glasses. No wonder those glasses give me headaches. if only they spend time with their patients, maybe this kind of thing wouldn't happen. i wish they'd just replace the glasses but i know they wont. read more

Dr. Caruso is taking care of my Glaucoma before I have cataract surgery. She is a Glaucoma specialist. She is very caring and has a great bed side manner and knows how to put you at ease. Had a recent terrible experience with Dr. Mady. Because of upcoming eye surgery with her Dr. Mady told me I'm asking too many questions and she's not tolerating it any longer. To make a bad situation worst she verbally threatened me she'll cancel my upcoming surgery because of my concerns. My mother's Dr. is Dr. Caruso. I will never take my mother back there again. She is 94 years old and in a wheelchair, it is difficult to get her there and in the examining chair. We waited in a hot room for an hour, I went to inquire about when the Doctor will be able to see her and they told me about a 2-3 hour wait. So my mother couldn't wait there anymore, we left. How can they treat elderly people like that. Very insensitive. Very inconsiderate. They need to manage a time frame for the patience's who need care. read more

My son has been a patient at the practice for a couple of years. Called to make appointment after getting new insurance. Aetna. They wouldn't make us an appointment until we provided the plan name. Ok. The appointment clerk was not nice, bordering on rude. Called Aetna. Aetna says there is no plan name, it's just Aetna, provide the practice with group/plan number. Called back ocean eye immediately. They hung up on us twice and then transferred us to billing department not available message. Never again. Now our 12yo goes to another practice in town who is accommodating and friendly. Bigger doesn't always mean better. Shame on them. read more

Took a 1/2 day off of work without pay because I needed my contact lenses renewed. I have an outstanding claim with my insurance that hasn't been paid yet, but they made an appointment for me anyway. After arriving for my appointment, they refused to see me, even after I spoke to my insurance and they gave me the claim number and said it was paid. If it's their policy not to see patients with outstanding claims unpaid, they should have said that and not given me an appointment. So now I'm out 1/2 day's pay in this economy for no reason! I had an eye emergency and they were very prompt at getting me the help and treatment I needed. Staff and doctors were first rate.

Rating is mostly related billing department. Billing error was made, and I quickly identified what it was that they did, called to try & work with them to correct THEIR billing mistake. Cannot correct THEIR billing error unless I speak to someone in person directly, nothing but voice mail. She called me at a time that I was involved with something else, like driving a car. I called her a second time & yet again VOICE MAIL. What many people in today's work business environment don't consider is that my time is just as important as their time. I don't sit around waiting by the phone for them to get around to me. I took my time to call them about THEIR billing problem. They have office hours for a reason, accommodating their patients during office hours and answering the phone is part of the reason. They are open doing business. Part of doing business is providing good service to the people who pay for the services they are selling. Had I called after their office was closed, yes, voice mail is a good tool to address after hour's needs when nobody is physically there. Voice mail abuse is common practice these days & it's everywhere done by today's work force. There is little or no concept of what good customer/patient service is anymore. Quite frankly I don't think today's work force even cares about it. This billing department is substandard, the telephone staff is condescending & when they hear something that doesn't coincide with their way of thinking they resort to name calling and rudeness. When they don't treat patients with dignity & respect by cutting their dialog off and talking over them & the patient becomes upset, they hang up after talking down to the patient. Clearly the staff here does not received training in customer service or how to deal with any given situation. Clearly the motto that the customer is always right is a foreign concept in this practice, I think it's time, after all these years to find a new place for eye care. Dr. Robinson retired, he was my go-to Dr. for many years, and it seems the place is going downhill since his departure. New female Dr. that replaced him seems reluctant to accommodate patient requests which were no different than what Dr. Robinson always provided me for years. So, I switched to a different Dr. Asked to have that new Dr. call me to discuss this recent issue & staff refused to oblige me. After reading other reviews here I see that my complaints are pretty much in line with the other people's. read more

I went to this establishment since they were well reviewed for pediatric patients. I arrived 10 minutes early for my 10:45 appointment and checked in. I sat in the waiting room with my 5 year old wearing masks waiting for our appointment. I quickly noticed that everyone who came in after us had already been seen and left. At 11:15 I walked to the desk, the receptionist said they have one pediatric room so I have to wait for the other patient to finish so I sat back down. 11:15 turned into 11:45, we have sat there for an hour and have only paid a co pay. At 12:15 we get called into the preliminary room where my now antsy 5 year old struggled with the disgustingly rude technician who was trying to gauge her sight. At one point my daughter asked what one of the tools did and instead of taking the time to answer her( a small price to pay as my daughter has already spent two hours there and the technician had only met with us for 7 minutes) she said" you wouldn't understand. " So as you can imagine at this point I am beyond annoyed and asked to leave since the establishment was unprofessional and rude but I was assured I would meet with the doctor in ten minutes. We were transferred to the actual pediatric room at 12:30. At 12:45 the doctor comes in and spends 2 minutes and said he needs to dilate her eyes to see better so I agree. A new technician comes in and holds my 5 year olds head back and says to my daughter "this will sting." I am not sure what planet this disgrace of a nurse hails from but telling a 5 year old something will hurt them after they have been patient for two hours will almost always result in a melt down( thanks for making her afraid of the eye doctor by the way, be sure to bill me for the trauma). The nurse was annoyed at this bizarre reaction of my child melting down and said"well I guess that won't work."( really? I am so very surprised) she then told us to wait for the doctor to finish her testing. At 1:10 another nurse walked in and asked if we had seen the doctor ( in hindsight this was a trick question, she wasn't asking if we had seen the doctor but actually if we needed to see the doctor again) I told her we had and we waited again. At 1:30 the doctor reappears and asks if she was dilated, I was astonished that his nurse didn't bother to fill him so I took care of that part of her job for her. After 3 hours in this dirty, outdated and disorganized establishment the doctor informed us that since she wasn't dilated the results are inconclusive and she may or may not need glasses but if she is complaining about her sight to come back. I informed Dr Spedick that we were only here because she had been complaining about her sight. He suggested we schedule more thorough testing with another appt. Which we will be doing somewhere else. Save yourself the time, your child the trauma and go somewhere else. Anywhere else. Literally anywhere. read more

Had surgery on my eyes starting in January. Here we are in August after 3rd operation they are charging me for post op visit. Eyes still not right. Had paid $10,000.00 for first 2 procedures that didn't work. Refunded me $3,200.00 since that didn't work. The 3rd procedure has been done couple months ago and still not what I paid for. They claim it's procedure after 90 days post op visits aren't post op anymore even though I still can't see. Think this is crazy. Just want people to be ware. Guess I will try and find another Dr. That isn't going to nickel and dime me after paying 6,800 out of my pocket plus co pays. read more

I had Lasik Cataract surgery on February 19/2020. from the time until I saw the original Doctor how did my other eye, did I stop feeling pain in my eye. Ocean Eye Institute did nothing to get rid of my swollen eye. They gave me eye drops that were expensive and ineffective. My orignal Doctor told me Lasik Cataract surgery was a Doctor money maker. regular Cataract surgery more then efficient. My eye was infected, I was on an antibiotic for over a month and a half. Dr Brooksbank at that practice is probably one of the most compassionate doctors I've met. On a holiday weekend at 5:00 p.m. he was willing to stay in the office to see my then 3-year-old son who stuck himself in the eye w a straw. Fast forward to 2021, I cannot say even the slightest polite thing about Dr Grossman and his horrible bedside manner. When I called him with an emergency with my five year old son who had a foreign body in his eye he didn't want to be inconvenienced to have to come into the office. I understand we're in a covid environment but you have a child with long term eye issues with something visibly lodged in their eye and he has a cavalier attitude. You want a good ophthalmologist Dr. Spedick for kids at the same practice or take yourself out to CHOP, Dr. Mills. Grossman has no business being the emergency on call doctor, he lacks the bedside manner and grace. read more

It was not just a floater I went to wills hospital in philly and the floater turns out to be my lenz from cataract surgery that I had had many years ago. Dr. Grossman dismissed me as his patient for eye glass renewal on my visit 6/25/2019. I had a refraction done and waited to see him. He came into the room and was dancing around saying I am not going to give you eye glass prescriptions here any more. No glass for you. I don't care where you go or who you see just not here. Go be someone else's problem. On and on and on smirking as he said this. I asked why?? Because you always come back and need lens change and I am not doing it any more. NOT ANYMORE. I will take care of other problems but not with glasses. I said you are the only on who knows what my eye problems are and always take care of it. I won't be able to find anyone else to do this. DON'T CARE. I think I have been with him at least 10 years. Always afraid if would happen when he retires. Who would help me.. My eye exam tells doc what I need but for some reason my eye does not like the new lens. Thus the new lens has to be replaced and adjusted by doc. Yes this happens all the time. Panic sheer panic was hitting me. I thought I wanted to cry,felt sick,ears ringing and I just had to get up and leave. I bet he was as happy as hell thinking I will never have to see her again. There is no CEO or PRESIDENT for this group so I am writing this here. I guess since he is a partner in this group that it is OK for him to treat a patient this way and not have to answer for his actions or worry. Besides there are so many patients whats one gone. I have been a patient of Ocean Eye Institute for over 20 yrs. When I had my little mishap with my eye (torn cornea) I went to them. Anyway all my visits for 90 days were post op appointments. Then I get a bill for my co-pays for 4 of those visits. So when I was there for my visits (on more than one occasion) I would ask the attending person to please have someone contact me regarding these fees. I even mentioned it to my Dr. which her response was to let the girls at the desk know. My appointments are after normal business hours. Well ether no one left them the message or it was ignored by their billing department. My giant bill of $60. was sent to collection. So I called the number on my bill and had to leave a message. All this back and forth so ridiculous. Apparently asking in person isn't acceptable. Why do they put a phone number on their bills is beyond me. No one answers you have to leave a message and wait for a call back. I am not disputing my bill I just wanted to know dates of service and what it was for.....anyway long to short I called the receptionist and finally got my answer. I paid my bill after my questions were answered.....There you go now was that so difficult? This bill would have been paid months prior if someone would have called me back. I think I have one more appointment and I no longer feel comfortable returning to this office. I can see Dr Angioletti in a different location. Not sure about Lautenberg or Mady but if they have the same billing as the Toms River location I will not be back to see them due to incompetent staff. Such a shame your employees represent your business. I see these 3 Dr.s in this office for 3 different issues. So all 3 Dr.s will be loosing a patient, a patient with excellent insurance all because of no call back. It is easier for employees to send your account to collection because most large businesses have contracts with agencies so why bother calling people back. For this practice they won't even notice loosing a patient since they are a very large group but public beware even when you do your part if it falls on deaf ears it doesn't matter what you do. Oh yes I will be checking to see if collection was rescinded. If you are looking for "customer service" and "communication" this is NOT the place. Remember not only do you want a good doctor but if you can't get past the gate keeper this effects understanding not only your financial responsibility but your medical needs as well. So I am giving this practice a low score for lack of communication and lack of professionalism. Just a foot note: I have had other issues with this practice, waiting past appointment time, nothing for pain during emergency surgery, yes awake for the entire 2 hrs in surgery. I was not given the option. Confusion with staff not knowing what my appointment was going to consist of and moving me from room to room. This was my second visit to this office. Last year I had an eye glass exam and full contact lens fitting. Decided to move whole family to this practice since it had both Optometrist and Opthamologist in same practice. My second visit was not the same and now have to find new eye Dr. I went for eyeglass and contact exam again and I will add that I severe myopia with a -13.75 prescription in glasses and I have been wearing contact lenses for 37 years. The young lady who checked me into the room checked my vision in contacts before Dr came in, but the Dr never once looked at my contacts in my eyes or even checked my vision with them. This is the first time in 37 years of wearing lenses that an eye Dr has not checked my contact lenses during an exam. Typically I have been checked to make sure they fit properly still by the Dr. Based on my severe myopia I find this very disturbing. The eyeglass exam it self was fine. When time came to check out I was charged for a contact exam and I asked girl at desk how I can be charged when he never even looked at them in my eyes. I was told by her that he doesn't need to unless it is a fitting or you are having issues. So I had to basically pay for them to hand me a prescription. Now they charge my medical insurance for retinal picture he took and was never told that it is not covered by insurance and given an option to decide if I want it, according to my vision insurance it should be covered but I was told they don't have a contract for that with VSP. I have Bell's Palsy and Ocean Eye Institute is the only place that has a doctor that can help me (in my area). I called the office to make an appointment and they told me they are not taking new patients with Medicaid. I pleaded my case and got no resolution. I decided to write a letter to the Doctor in charge. June 25, 2018 OCEAN EYE INSTITUE 601 ROUTE 37 WEST TOMS RIVER, NJ 08755 Attn: Dr. Allan Schoenfeld Dear Dr. Schoenfeld, My name is ____, I have been suffering from bell's palsy since June 13, 2015. I have been told by my neurologist that my damages are permanent. I have had surgery for a gold eyelid weight inserted into my left eye by Dr. Shey in New Brunswick at Robert Wood Johnson Hospital. Evidently the weight that this doctor placed in my eye is to heavy for my eyelid. I have tried many other doctors and have exhausted all necessary alternatives, I am turning to your doctors for help. I have contacted your office in Toms River about 3 times for them to tell me they are no longer taking on new patients with Medicaid. Unfortunately, this is the only insurance I have. I am hoping that you can find in your heart some way to help me get this weight out of my eye and a lighter weight in place. I had the surgery in November of 2017 and the doctor who performed my surgery is no longer practicing in the US. I am daily in discomfort and cannot see out of my eye because it does not open properly. Once, again I am asking desperately for help. Went there for the 1st time and saw Dr. Grossman. He was the worst! Also, the man that gave me the eye exam was just as bad. I should have known he was going to be a problem when I saw that his uniform/scrubs shirt was extremely wrinkled. I've never seen anyone in the medical field dressed so unprofessionally in my life. He was the one who gave me the exam and it was as bad as his wrinkled shirt. He went through the slides for vision very quickly and I don't feel that it was thorough. I don't even think he used all of the slides. I'm pretty sure he misdiagnosed my vision because the doctor prescribed me a much higher RX for glasses based upon that exam and I don't need that high an RX. As for Dr. Grossman; He was condescending, uninformative and demanding. He actually was raising his voice to me about how he insisted I need glasses for driving based on the test, even though I told him I can see all the traffic signs, etc. perfectly! He apparently believed the test over what I told him, so essentially he was calling me a liar and implying his test knows better than what I actually see. Like I said, I think the test was incorrect and I believe my own eyes! After arguing back and forth finally he actually ended by saying something like, "You're not going to win on this, you need driving glasses!" then stormed out. I think he even slammed the door. I was in shock! What an unprofessional, brute. Never again! Hopefully, no one from the office writes back with their standard, fake apology. Please don't bother. I stand by my word. read more

I received a letter saying that I could no longer go to any of their locations due to my cancellations. (I cancelled twice because my mother-in-law was dying from cancer). The letter was sent to me after I cancelled because I told them that my daughter was sick and I was not going to risk sending her in for her appointment. Are you kidding me? You are punishing me for not sending my sick child into your building during a pandemic? I was appalled. I called and asked to speak with Mary Gailis, the COE, and she refused to return any of my voicemails. My husband then tried calling, and she also refused to call him back. All I wanted to do was discuss this letter, and she did not have the respect to call me back. She is incompetent, unethical, and in my opinion a coward. I am writing this so that no one gets treated with the same disrespect that my daughter and I did. Go to Eyes First Vision Center in Manchester. Everyone that works there is amazing and you will actually be treated with respect. I guess I should be thanking Mary Gailis, because if she actually returned my calls I may have not found Eyes First Vision Center and their amazing Doctor, Donna Malloy. the only reason I gave the one star review is that a negative star is not offered. I called to make an appointment for my family member. I gave the woman on the phone a choice of 2 doctors , 2 locations & 3 different days of the week that we were available to come in to get the appointment. I felt that was flexible on my end. after himming and hawing I was finally able to get an appointment 3 weeks later. ok I understand with Covid plandemic restrictions. went to the Toms River office for an appointment with my family member. I prefer to go to the Brick office because it is much closer to our residence. we arrived and checked in at 10:45 and was told my appointment was at 10:15. No it was at 10:45. we were told to have a seat and she would ask the Dr if he would take us. 5 family members were patients of this "practice" for over 12 years. Glasses , contacts, surgeries, exams, etc. we were then told we couldn't be seen after driving a half hour due to their error in scheduling. They've made previous errors through the years that I've overlooked. they offered an new appointment 3 weeks later. I was very irritated. I wanted to reschedule, the the girl sitting at the desk conveniently stepped away. Mary came to the front and said I couldn't make an appointment, they would call me. No thanks Mary. I was extremely disappointed with my entire experience first of all the staff screams your name I realize there are many senior citizens there however they don't need to be screamed at . I felt like it was a factory and then when the physician came in barely said hello I have always went to physicians who introduce themselves and shake my hand seemed to impressed with himself lastly barely spoke to me his interest was more to get it documented to the assistant who was there to do his documenting, communication was upsetting and fortunately I had no real eye issues .
