The doctors are great, the eye surgery went well, but and a very big BUT, watch out for all of the hidden costs that they do not tell you about up front. I opted for the laser to remove my cataract and was fine paying the $1980 that the insurance would not cover. Now for the really bad part, they do not submit the 1980 to the insurance carrier because insurance will not pay for it, I understand that but I figure that would cover the rest of my deductible. Since they do not submit it, the deductible is not taken care of. So now I received several other bills, one for the doctor $2800, and one for the use of the facility another $2875, plus 3 or 4 other small charges.. After insurance I still have to pay $1000. When I called they told me "oh that is in your packet that you signed". WATCH OUT FOR HIDDEN COSTS. read more

How does someone ever trust a dr after going to Fitchman Eye Care again? We went for routine exams, no different then any other year and even asked while we left if we were getting billed for routine exams as our insurance covers 100% and bam three weeks later we get a bill for a diagnosis we didn't authorize or even show an interest in getting. $300.00 for an routine eye exam. Yes, this is not a typo. This is a yearly routine eye exam. Go somewhere else. After I got the bill I called around and checked other eye doctors and for the same exact exam it would of only cost me my $10 copy. Here is the breakout of the bill. $230 Comprehensive Exam $161 United Healthcare covers $69 I have to pay $65 Refraction $0 United Healthcare covers $65 I pay so $134 Total I paid and $161 health insurance paid. The same exam including the refraction would of cost me $10 (my copay) at most any other eye doctor. Eye exams are routine and any eye doctor can do them. I actually saw an assistant for 15 minutes for the eye test and an eye doctor for 10 minutes for the eye light exam....so they are making $600 an hour. Highway robbery. I went in to check for cataracts - I went thru approx 3 exams - Was ok -Dr Fichman came in with a woman who stood there watching (he said it was for security?? Anyway in my opinion he was condescending, I did not like his demeanor. He's an ass!! - When I was ready to leave he just walked out. No goodby. I went to Fichman Eye Center for Visian ICL about a year ago. Dr. Tu was my surgeon, and before inserting the lens he made a small hole in my iris (called a LPI) that you need so that the pressure doesn't go too high. The LPI was placed in the wrong position (12 o'clock) and I now have a permanent white line across one of my eyes. On repeat visits, I was told I had no options for fixing it, verbatim: "You have a hole in your iris." He didn't even care. He entered the room and sat staring at the computer, and would barely interact with me. I later learned that the modern standard of care is for the LPI to be placed at a 3 or 9 o'clock position to prevent these sorts of complications. I still feel really awful that I spent $6000 cash for a terrible outcome. On top of it all the eye he operated on is droopy now and makes my eyes look asymmetrical. I'm sure many patients have had good outcomes at their office- I was NOT one of them. read more

I have just finished having my second eye done. I had both cataract and lasik surgery. The staff was extremely supportive and any questions were answered. The nurses and technicians were knowledgeable, competent and caring. the surgery center and exam rooms were always clean. I started at the Torrington office which informed me that to correct my vision surgery was needed and set me up with a visit to Dr. Fichman who came to the Torrington office. That was Huge it saved me a whole morning of travel. Dr. Fichman after examining me laid all options on the table. The last option allowed me the chance to reverse my near nearsightedness which i have lived with for fifty four years! I am so glad I chose that option! Waking up in the morning and not knocking my glasses to the floor and being able to see everything clearly is nothing short of fantastic! Dr. Fichman's attention to how i felt and how the procedure turned out is the best! His concerns of making sure everything was going well makes you feel like you are family. Definitely not like the larger places where once your done you get passed around to everyone and their brother! All i can say is that if you are considering either lasik or cataract or both that Dr Fichman is the one to see! read more

Over $10,000 spent in my family at this business and we asked for medical records ONE time- we got billed almost $20 for a piece of paper. Shelly in billing was the rudest person I have ever spoke to, she talked to me, a mother of 3, like I was a child, explaining the costs of her doing business and that we had our lasik 'a long time ago' apparently 2 years is too long. She went on her rant for more than 5 minutes. You Shelly are in the business of customer service, I am the customer, no one deserves to be talked down to. Apparently once you are out of their year follow up included in lasik they toss you to the curb. On top of this, I never restored 20/20 vision and still have daily dry eyes! Plenty of places offer great customer service and continued customer service to past customers, they all are about the same quality of actual care for lasik so when you are talking thousands of dollars go elsewhere! Awful experience at Fichman Eye Center Went there because of wife experience was OK for her. I was seen a half hour late by some girl in high school who shoved me in a closet with other equipment turned the heat on high and attempted to perform some marginal testing When it came time for dilation I request on three occasions that this test be bypassed (I had no driver to take me home). the girl from high school stated that the doctor would not see me otherwise. That's when I gave up, I got up and walk out. read more

I have contacted the Torrington location multiple times and requested my records. The first time the gentleman said he was new and working alone so he couldn't fax my records. He agreed to call me back in the next two days. Three days later I called and the manager answered and said she had no knowledge of my request. I gave her all my info again and she promised to fax the file "in the next few minutes." 10 hours later I still have not received my file and cannot reach anyone at the office. Went to the Fichman eye center for an annual exam and was told by the doctor that I should have some extra tests to check for possible glaucoma. They explained that some of the tests would not be covered by my vision insurance, but the tests would be put through my medical insurance. This didn't seem right to me but after checking I was told that's how the insurance works and they were correct doing it that way. The office is very busy but that's probably because lots of people think they do a good job. I was happy with the service I received there. read more

I went to for an eye exam and was barely greeted by a rude staff member. The other receptionist that spoke to me was quite nice so I was feeling better until a young girl wearing Ugg bedroom slippers took me into the tiny ill-equipped exam room and acted and looked so unprofessional. Finally it was time to see the Dr. for my actual exam and he barely spoke to me and provided a half hearted exam while desperately needing a tick tack. Bad place, bad staff! read more

Dr. Fichman treated me with laser surgery for cataracts in both eyes, and I'm extremely pleased with the results. Dr. Fichman has decades of experience operating on cataracts, and he greatly impressed me as being knowledgeable, understanding and caring. These are all qualities mentioned by the eye doctor who referred me to him. During the consultation, Dr. Fichman explained very clearly the various options for treatment of the cataracts and for vision correction. He also got back to me very quickly when I had additional questions about the procedures and lenses. He even took the time to call me on a day when he wasn't in the office. Dr. Fichman is always very pleasant and professional, and very attentive to any concerns. I found the staff at Fichman Eye Center to be very helpful and professional, too. Dr. Fichman and his assistants do everything possible to ensure that the laser surgery is comfortable, and the procedure is painless and quick. All in all, it was a breeze. As for the results of the surgery, I'm absolutely amazed by how clear, bright and sharp my vision in both eyes is now. I could not be happier. Tracey C.'s review above about is place my exact experience every time I've been in there POST-OP after my Lasik surgery. Spent a great deal of $$ for Lasik, so you'd think you would get some really good customer service or at least something that you could'nt complain about. NOT THE CASE. You WILL have to wait 50mins+ for any appointment. I've walked out of the waiting room on 2 different occations waiting for my follow up appointments so that I can get back to work, and then dread to make my next one just knowning that I will have the same experience. I even called them out on it when rescheduling and the solution was to come right in the beggining of the day so that there was no chance of being backed up. Still waited the hour (with the same 45 min wait and then complaining and then them sticking me in a side waiting room - must be where they put the "complainers", so that the new business customers don't get a taste)!! At this point it was just out of concern for my eye as I had been experiencing pain and blurriness in one of my eyes. Also, I've had a different doctor each time I've been in there. Felt stuck in an endless cycle, so I've thrown in the towel with Fitchman, even though follow up appointments are included in the pirce that I've already paid for the surgery. I am more than willing to pay for a visit elsewhere. My new appointment is today. The crazy thing is that I haven't even finished all of my follow ups with them, and they knew I was experiencing problems with the one eye, and they haven't even reached out to see if I will be coming back or not. I wish I had known it'd be like this before. There is NO WAY I would've chosen them out of the many options out there. Guess I did because of name recognition - hearing there name on the radio all the time. " Hmm they must be good". The radio adds must only back up their waiting rooms. Just awful! read more
