What really stood out was that Phil, the owner, personally reached out that same evening to ask how the appointment went and whether our questions had been answered, regardless of whether we hired them. Coming from an HVAC sales background myself, that meant a lot to me. I've always appreciated family-owned businesses, and an owner who takes that kind of interest in a potential customer says something about how the company operates. Phil and I ended up talking about a roof replacement we were also planning. I'd already met with six roofing companies, but that conversation convinced me to get one more estimate. We ultimately hired California Energy for both the roof and insulation. What followed was a complicated project with multiple contractors working at our house, changing schedules, and a few unexpected problems. California Energy has been very accommodating throughout. Eugene was patient and thoughtful as we discussed various options to maintain and protect the waterproof membrane and strengthen the structural integrity of our expansive decks on a hillside. He was mindful of our budget and, as a general contractor, identified and repaired another area in our crawlspace. He came up with creative solutions, and he has a great sense of design and style. We ended up replacing our upper deck with Trex composite boards. On the lower deck, his crew replaced most of the redwood boards and repainted the deck, even the wooden joists of the upper deck, for both wood preservation and aesthetic purposes. His crew paid attention to details. He also did the stone facing on our portico. Eugene went above and beyond. He's honest, experienced, and pleasant to work with. I hired Sam's Deck and Restoration to demolish an old propane enclosure and build a new one…read more Unfortunately, the quality of workmanship was some of the worst carpentry I have ever seen. The enclosure was framed approximately 11 inches out of square. Instead of measuring and cutting each board properly, they ran boards long and cut them in place, damaging the material behind them in the process. Basic finish carpentry practices were ignored. When I asked Sam why he didn't orient the boards so the factory edges were visible and the cut edges were hidden, he didn't seem to understand the concern. What was most disappointing was the response when I brought up the quality issues. Sam's comment was, "It's just a propane enclosure." In my opinion, a professional carpenter should take pride in every project, regardless of size, and provide the customer with quality workmanship. For a project that cost around $3,000, I expected much better attention to detail and craftsmanship. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend this company and would suggest others look elsewhere.
