This centre is so unexpected - you'd never think to find somewhere this flash on the Downham…read moreestate! There's a huge pool, a very new gym, classes and Costa Coffee. Downham library is also in the building, and a Health Centre. The creche is the best - great value for money and amazing staff - both my children have to be dragged out of there. My favourite classes are spinning with Ellie and Hi-Lo Aerobics. The only down side is the car park - you can only park for 2 and a half hours - be careful as it's done by camera and if you go over you get slapped with a fine automatically. With so much to do in there, it's easy to spend a lot longer there - I always have to run out and re-park!

It's still pretty new as it was built nearly three years ago and has been maintained well ever since. The swimming pool has got a great viewing gallery and the swimming pool looks out onto the the green fields of Durham Hill! The gym facilities are of a good standard too - I was pleasantly surprised! They do not have a sauna, steam room or jacuzzi though, but they do have fitness classes. I recommend the Spinning sessions - they are very popular, but very punishing for the legs! I would recommend that you travel there by bicycle (there are lots of places to lock your bicycle outside the Centre) or use public transport, because the parking is very limited. If you're lucky to get a space, the you only have two and a half hours otherwise you get fined £90 - so be warned!

Funny thing is that I was at that class yesterday but the staff was new and she had no idea how to deal with another no show fee on my account. So she let me in and that's why I had that fee on my account . I called today and I spoke with a guy on the phone explaining the issue. He said he is going to remove both my fees on my account. After few hours I called again since the fee was not removed and he answered after a long wait that he will remove it when he will have time, he is busy doing other staff. I explained I have a class at 5 pm and I don't want to explain again the full story to another adviser. He did not listen nor removed my fees. I arrived at the gym and I asked to speak to the same guy. I was very frustrated with the poor level of service already. He did not apologise nothing. Instead of listening to me he decided to tell me I am rude and he called his general manager. The general manager was very rude and not listening. I explained to him is not about the money for those fees. I explained I am unhappy with the fact I was wasting time all day on the calls and no one had time for their customers; The general manager threaten me in front of everyone that will cancel my membership. In the end he did not so why the threating then? What a rude staff all together. If you don't have time to deal with your customers and you don't care about customers feedback then you should not operate as a business. Customers are important because they drive revenues. You should listen more and make some time for your customers if you want to grow as business.

We are big fans of slides and flumes and each year seek out the new and return to old favourites. And this pool is an old favourite - perhaps the all time favourite. 39 minutes on the train from Blackfriars and you emerge at Swanley and then a 10/15 minute walk through the grim shopping centre (not a single coffee shop - what is that about?) and some residential greenery and you find the rather uninspiring (at first sight) Whiteoak Leisure Centre. Two floors down in the basement is a rather lovely L shaped 33m pool with a dedicated diving area (1m, 3m and 5m boards). No slides or water jets or bubbles or waves on offer. However, through a door to the back of the pool was the flume area - 3 great slides Shark - a superfast straight slide that belongs at Thorpe Park, Dolphin a more leisurely and longer slide and the Whale - a giant sit on inflatable ring slide. Minimal queues and great fun. On our last visit we spent nearly 3 hours sampling the delights, doing some training lengths and jumping from the 3m boards. Honestly if your kids love to swim then this is a journey you really should make. The changing rooms are a bit tatty and the showers are only ok - skip the cafe plenty of green spots for a picnic - none of that matters as these flumes are really the best in reach of London (that we have discovered so far). We probably make the trek here 4 times a year - best on a really hot day as the flume area can get chilly if not warmed up by sunshine.

Like the other sports centres which were taken over by Parkwood Leisure group, Crook Log Sports…read moreCentre has been refurbished to the extent that if you haven't been there for a few years, you could be mistaken for thinking you had turned up at the wrong place. The centre has been modernised giving it a clinical and clean feel. The gym upstairs has plenty of equipment and the wait for machines to become free is minimal if you have to wait at all. TV screens are on in front of the running machines meaning you can catch up on the days news stories or watch sports events. Weights machines are at the end of the room with a good selection. The pool downstairs is a good place to finish your session and cool off although you may have to share it with people taking part in various pool based sessions such as aerobics or kids clubs. Timetables are available on the website if you wish to have an undisturbed swim. If finishing the session with a swim is not for you then a cafe and bar makes a good location to sit and let your muscles recover. It is spacious and finding a table is not a problem. For those with kids, a creche service is on offer meaning you can train with ease. Parking facilities are on offer on site with a large car park outside with plenty of spaces. Price wise, Crook Log and Parkwood Leisure are very reasonable. Membership is £34 a month and this includes use of the gym and swimming pool facilities as well as discounts on court hire and other services at the centre.

This Gym is great but why? Well I'm confident to say after all my many visits to this place…read more For starters I need to correct myself and say this is not a gym. I repeat this is not a gym this is a private leisure centre. It's fantastic, quite literally everything is an experience quite different from the average, but let me explain. Signing up was nice, simple and smooth as the sales rep takes you around to show off their state of the art facilities such as crèche area where the qualified members of staff looks after your little ones for up to 4 hours while you get your workout on as they boast a range of soft toys, play pen and at times fancy dressed workers for light hearted entertainment. The lounge area is just as good with Wi-Fi access that runs throughout the who building, a lovely selection of food ranging in the hot and cold selections including a selection of flat screen computers that supplement your internet access through the Wi-Fi. This setting is against the wall length windows creating an open plan feel with a consistent summer feel inside the lounge, also there are a couple of deep seated leather sofa that has a TV hanging over head with a selection of Sky TV channels. The Dove Spa area being a partnered business for virgin active provides a range of things at a fee such as beauty therapy treatments like the pedicure, manicure with a range of deep cleansing face masks. There is also a range of cosmetic products on sale such as exfoliating items, creams, brushes etc. it's something I'm sure the female customers surely looks back twice at. Now what we need to establish is that this is just the ground floor at the front reception desk, yes, there is still the back where the separate male and female changing rooms are located each with their large number of showers, lockers and both having their own steam rooms which is amazing as they use scented aromas like eucalyptus inside which is really relaxing. Now this is the whole of down stairs which is considerably large so you can imagine the size of the gym upstairs which mirrors the size of everything downstairs. Oh my, this can be overwhelming if you're not a gym person, but luckily I am. The brilliant sized studio for classes with mirrors all along the sides which will make you feel like you in a ballet studio and yes they do ballet classes to boot. What a spacious functional area for working out, warm ups, stretches and fast classes if you are not keen on the hour long classes in the two studios. These functional areas you can use things from body mats, skipping ropes, kettle bells and even Vipers for those that are in the know. They even have a TRX machine for open use. The free weights area is just as large with all the expected equipment in other gyms but with the all but one remaining difference which is quantity, and yes virgin active Bromley has plenty and their cardiovascular area is the same with all their treadmills, bikes, row machine etc. I also believe the woman's only workout area is a nice touch for privacy for all those who are conscious of it and or even have religious believe that makes this idea a necessity. I must not forget to mention a third studio upstairs that is dedicated to bikes and with over thirty of them for spin classes throughout the day. It just never crosses my mind to go in to that relentless, rigorous class. Well, I mentioned downstairs and upstairs but I need to mention the side of the building dedicated to swimming, saunas, more showers and a Jacuzzi bath for everyone to share. I hope you can see why this place is amazing, but the reason why I don't give it 5 star which it deserves is the monthly fees which ranges from £70 - £90 a month. Lucky for me I pay half that price which I mentioned in the top tips for this place. PS I have my moments when I am an insane gym addict and moments when I'm anything but.
