Frank did a fantastic job of sharpening multiple knives as well as a pair of Felco pruning shears,…read moreand he even accommodated my unpredictable schedule. I was visiting my parents in Central NJ and again found myself struggling to cook efficiently because all their knives are incredibly dull. While they have high quality knives, the blades haven't been sharpened in ages. I searched high and low for a local knife sharpener but came up empty handed. Then I found Frank. I was going to be in South Jersey for a wedding and visiting Philly as well so I figured I could swing by at some point. Because my schedule kept changing, I ended up having multiple conversations with Frank to find a time that would work for both of us. Despite his shop being closed, he let me come by on a Sunday after 5pm. Talk about incredible service! Frank's shop has all kinds of cool local woodwork, handicrafts, and signs to browse while you wait the few minutes for your knives to be ready. He also has an adorable, friendly pup named Brandon. Thank you Frank for being so friendly, accommodating, and doing an excellent job with the knives and pruners! I'll be back the next time my parents' knives need sharpening.

From the owner: Mt Airy Sharp is Northwest Philadelphia's hyper-local professional sharpening service. We operate…read moreout of Mount Airy. We use extreme care on every tool, using a variety of hand and power sharpening methods. While we operate as a traditional sharpening service, we never miss the chance to educate you about how edges work and how to tune tools to better suit your needs. We used to value skills like sharpening in our culture, but as modernization took hold in the US, these self reliant skills were lost. These skills aren't taught in school, partly because societal opinion has looked down on the trades. These two truths combine for a sad story of how tools in general are treated, valued, and used. At Mt Airy Sharp, I believe that people should use and care for tools in the best way because: 1) It is often the difference between a functional tool and a nonfunctional one. 2) It's more enjoyable to use sharp and properly set up tools. 3) The results on the workpiece/food are always better. 4) The satisfaction of using your hands to first sharpen, and then put to use a tool is primal and gratifying!
