Always have to stop here for a couple of drinks. It's a time warp back to the 1800's. A must do! Love this place.

This is a historic bar with interesting interior design ( you have to see the stained glass overhang above the bar). I came in on a Saturday morning after walking around the Calumet farmers market. A board advertising bloody mary's beckoned me inside. Apparently that is a new thing for Shute's. I could tell this was a community gathering place. Lots of people were there enjoying conversation and drinks. I had a good time getting to know Calumet locals. Drink prices were fair. read more

Unique. Oldest existing bar in Calumet. Woodwork is beautiful! Really a neat experience. I highly recommend if you are in the area.

Visited this Super cool old bar around noon. Beautiful wall, lights and stained glass above the bar. Bathroom is old too so the cleanest. Drinks were decently priced, not a huge selection but not bad. Bartender was friendly and recovering from the night before. read more

The bar is very chill and historic. You can tell it is an old spot as soon as you walk-in. Stained glass hangs over the bar which has a pretty cool look + impact on the bar. Super big mural on one side of the bar. Bar tender was nice. Cool spot to have a drink. read more

What COOL historic bar! The inside of this place is absolutely gorgeous- an amazing relic of the prosperous times during the mining boom in the Keweenaw. Important note: One of the Yelp reviews said to make sure you order their long island, so I did. They don't have a house long island; they just use a store-bought mix. I mentioned the Yelp review and she said they haven't had a house-made long island in the several years she's worked there. This bar was so great. I'm from the mitten and we took a road trip up to the UP and this was probably the best bar we stopped at. A great old building with so much character. It's an old Italians drinking house that had a brothel in the upstairs. There is a mural on the wall that is a depiction of Calumet. The stain glass above the counter is beautiful and so unique. The bar itself has so much character and is so beautiful. The bartender was great. We stopped in late October and no one else was there so great service. George was a hoot and had all the knowledge of the place. I would recommend stopping in for a couple drinks and settling in at the bar. They had lots of beer in bottles and cans and a also some on tap. You are bound to find something you will like. read more

Pee. of Michigan, head to Shute's, find a water pipe that runs the along the walls from floor to ceiling and cozy up against that pole like a stripper working hard for some money -because congratulations you have found the warmest spot in all of Northern MICHIGAN! So glad it is open again. Beautifully restored 1890's bar. We stopped in for a quick drink. Quiet on a Saturday afternoon so we chatted with bartender. Friendly, great atmosphere. Local draft beer, a soda, and a little souvenir cost $6.00. He said they have live music often too. Great place. Everyone who visits Calumet should pay a visit. read more

I'll probably regret this for being so helpful, but I'm a Keweenah peninsula aficionado and my favorite indoor watering hole when the weather sucks is Shute's. Why? The atmosphere makes me feel I just stepped back into the roaring 1920s with the long, dark bar. Plus, they always have some killer microbrew on tap that is hard to find, such as Sierra Nevado Torpedo or the vaunted Bell's Hopslam. The bottled selection is a good blend of German and craft brew. Not to leave anyone out, they also carry mass produced horse urine such as Busch Light for those that have facial tattoos and wear their baseball hats backwards hoping to convince some young lass they used to tour with Tupac. I don't think they have any food beyond potato chips, but with Michigan House Cafe right next door, who cares? If it's warm and sunny outside, go to Fitzgerald's in Eagle River and sit on the deck. If it's dark, rainy, cold or dreary, go to Shute's. In the Copper Country, that means advantage Shute's about seven months per year. read more

Shooty's (as it is locally known) is my favorite place in the Keweenaw to have a drink. The interior is beautiful turn-of-the-century Victorian style. The bathrooms have fun antique plumbing fixtures. And you can get just about any kind of alcoholic beverage here (they even have absinthe! which they serve with a sugar cube and a real absinthe spoon!) Of course they also have cheap beer for those who just want that. It is right next to the Calumet Theatre, and is often filled with performers and patrons of the Theatre before and after shows. There are other cosier and down-to-earth bars in Calumet, but Shute's is the grand old lady who, though might be showing her age, can still carry it off. read more

I often visit Upper Michigan to hang out with wife's old friends. In the UP, in the former mining boom town of Calumet, there is a great little bar that been around since the 1920's. Its called Shute's Bar. It was owned by Bernie Shute, Bernie has sold it and is now happily retired to Phoenix, AZ. he often returns for a visit in the summer time. The new people who are running it now has preserved it exactly as Bernie had it. They still have all the old decorations, the old piano, the old long bar, same sign out front says "SHUTES". There is an ordinance in town that requires this place to be called "Shutes". The new owner is a young fella, very friendly, very homey. The beers are all on tap now, some in bottles, When I was there this winter, the after church crowd walked in, one guy sat at the piano and played old broadway showtunes, This place has the most atmosphere of any old pub, best beer, most legacy of anyplace. Watch out for the restrooms, they have not been updated since the 1950's. read more
