I would normally blame the insurance but there's been negligence from Dr Rong and the staff itself that cannot be overlooked. 1) Dr Rong referred me to FiDi Endodontics for an RCT (root canal therapy). Terrible experience there - you can see my review with them but I suspect Dr Rong and the doctors there have networking so I was referred there which was completely horrible and quoted me a copay of $50. After expressing my frustration, they gave me two other options and I loved JC Endodontics, amazing every review is nearly 5 stars and it just makes me question why Dr Rong didn't recommend that place. (BTW, i didn't have a copay there for the consult so... why did FiDi quote me the $50+ consult charge? ‍ 2) Before even getting my RCT done, I emailed Dr Rong to discuss scheduling an appointment for a crown on January 20th, since i was familiar with the process having dental background. No answer so I followed up 2 days later. Dr Rong whom I assume wrote to me since there's no signature, stated she needed to submit the xray with the RCT performed for an "application", specifically she stated that she needed to apply for certain procedures. And she will call me the following day to discuss more. That was January 22. I responded with that ill be at work but email works best. January 23rd comes, no phone call, no email. I was expecting to hear from her, especially if you stated you're going to call someone. I got my RCT done by lovely Dr Choi from JC on 1/31. I gave them a week and decided to check in to see what was going on. Emailed Dr Rong yesterday on 02/07 that they were going to follow up with insurance. I don't understand this vague statement that they were probably trained to say when (of course this is all assumption) they probably didn't submit it. Again, I've worked in dental before. We've dealt with insurances, and it does not take a week. It's quite annoying as the temporary filling, despite not chewing on that side to avoid it wearing off, is wearing off. RCT is not cheap either. As of today, Dr Rong did NOT acknowledge her error and sent me my way. The hygienist Seraphina was absolutely terrible when it came to cleaning my teeth. I am disgusted by the way this dental office has behaved in its dealings with me. I came in as a new patient for a cleaning in late December 2024. Before coming in, I explained that I was paying out of pocket and asked for a price quote. The office quoted me $160 for the exam and cleaning, plus $10 per x-ray. The day I came in, I was informed that prices had changed and that the cleaning would now cost significantly more than the amount to which I had agreed. After some negotiations where I explained that I had received a quote by email, and that I wouldn't accept a higher price, the office attendant agreed to let me get the cleaning for $160. However, she insisted that the x-rays would cost more than $10 each, and that a $20 fee would be added "because the dentist needs time to look at your x-ray results." I declined getting the x-rays and settled for the cleaning and exam. This was the first red flag, but things soon took a turn for the worse. After the cleaning was over, the dentist informed me that I had five (5!) cavities. I was shocked, as I have never had more than one cavity at a time, and rarely at that. This further triggered my suspicion. On the way out, I was handed a "treatment plan" which proposed filling all five cavities and would cost me nearly $800. I have attached an image of it. On the recommendation of a friend, I went to 209 NYC Dental, a much more reputable office, which did an exam on me about a month later and found that I had ZERO cavities. (also attached) The dentist explained to me that I had a few stains in the grooves of my teeth, but that a simple test that involves poking a dental pick into the grooves to check for stickiness proved that these were not cavities. I was shocked at the patent lack of ethics at Shu Ping Rong, but not surprised. Five cavities was simply too many to be believable. Deeply unethical business practices like these not only cost patients money, but also contribute stress and worry to their lives as they anticipate long and painful procedures that are entirely unnecessary. And if the diagnosis I received was the result of incompetence (an inability to distinguish stains from cavities) rather than malice, that's equally unacceptable. Shame, shame, shame on this office. Head to another dental office that will go against its short-term financial interests to be honest with you and tell you that you don't need treatment when that's the case. I was deceived by her for a hundred dollars The so-called dentist Shu Ping Rong tried to pull out one of my teeth without having an in-depth discussion with me. Luckily I stopped her immediately and I had my teeth filled at another dental clinic on the recommendation of a friend (no tooth extraction). That day, I was extorted by Shu Ping Rong for a hundred dollars, because "you made an appointment yet you did not follow the dentist's instructions for treatment. so you wasted the time of the dentist." Found this place by clicking on a Yelp Ad actually. Lived in LES and didn't know such a highly rated dentist was a few blocks down in Chinatown. Had a cavity filled here, and of course been here for several cleanings. You don't see Dr Shu Ping every time though. I saw her after my cleaning today though and she's soooo sweet and very thorough. Possibility to see someone different every time though. Once I only saw a male. Only thing that's bothered me - One time last year they called to confirm my appointment and it was just for a cleaning and they said "confirming appt for an tooth extraction" and I was like GIRL NOOOO. She insisted it was for me. And I had never agreed or needed any teeth pulled at all in my adult life so they need to be aware of their records being correct. Could be a big problem if not corrected in the future. But looking at that as just something off putting and a mistake that happened, I still come here even though I moved to Gramercy because this place is great :-) Also ASHLEY is the best dental assistant ever. Omg. She did my cleaning today and I told her I didn't want to get an X-ray today and she didn't pressure me but made sure to explain all my options. Love you Ashley! Came here to get a cleaning and I had two hygienists help me. The older hygienist was rude and frustrated that I asked her to repeat something once because I wasn't clear on which X-rays I was taking and the fees. I was tearing up during the entire appointment because it was painful, yet I'm almost sure I caught the hygienist rolling her eyes at my discomfort. The male doctor I saw that day was aloof and did not make me feel at ease being a new patient. Update: The initial reply from their office manager Chelsea below named the specific procedure I had undergone along with my case details, which is a serious HIPAA violation. They have since updated their reply but I'm convinced that this office has no regard for the patient experience or wellbeing. I had only wanted to share my below-average experience with this office in my original 3-star review, so I do not planning on ever returning or speaking with anyone there as their attitude towards disappointed patients is simply upsetting. The three stars were originally for the nice receptionists who took my call and assisted me before my appointment, but the lack of professionalism and insensitivity of the office manager convinced me to change this review to one star. read more

This is the worst, most unethical, and least professional dental clinic I have ever been to. I came here last Monday to get my teeth cleaned. I originally just wanted to see a tooth that had been filled. I went there after 2:40 and had to wait for an hour. I told the dentist that I had a filled tooth that was not very comfortable and still felt very tight. I wanted to remove it and ask you to help me fill it again. The dentist told me that my insurance had already exploded on this tooth and I had to pay $70 myself. I said, let's have my teeth cleaned first and I'll think about it. After the teeth were cleaned, I told the dentist that my tooth was still not very comfortable. Could you help me see what the reason was? The dentist who cleaned my teeth hooked my teeth with a hook and said that my teeth were a little rough. If I wanted to make them smooth, I had to call a doctor and pay $70. Then I said yes, as long as he could fix it for me. I paid for it myself, and then the doctor was ready to check the tooth for me. She told me that a routine checkup would cost $70, and she kept emphasizing the $70 fee. It was obvious that if I didn't agree to pay $70, she wouldn't check my dentist. Then I agreed to pay and called the doctor. She told me where I had had this tooth filled before, and that it turned out that the doctor did it for free. Great, friendly, clean, and up-to-date tech-savvy dental office! Found this office on zocdoc and saw good reviews, so I decided to make an appointment for a toothache and an annual cleaning. Generally, I am nervous (like most) about the dentist. I even made 2 previous appointments I cancelled elsewhere because I didn't want to go. However, she looked friendly and the place seemed nice. I made my appointment and submitted some dental insurance info. The receptionist called me back 4 times to work out various issues with the info I entered, she helped figure it all out (my fault), and she found out all the exact pricing info for me! She made multiple calls to the insurance company, which I found incredibly generous because usually I'm told to solve these problems myself (and who wants to call and speak to customer service??) Once I got there, it was cozy, friendly, and welcoming. The receptionists were kind to immediately welcome me and help me check in. Everything is offered in English and Chinese (unfortunately I don't know which dialect I'm sorry). Everyone who works here is gentle and informative. Before doing anything, every dental/medical employee explained what they were about to do and why they were doing it - I didn't even ask. I never even had to tell them how anxious I get lol. When I booked Shu Ping Rong, DDS through ZocDoc I didn't have any expectations. In fact if I had to have any it would have been really low since Cigna sucks and they typically have terrible health care providers on their roster. Gosh was I surprised. The entire office is either new or completely renovated, as with new equipment. The front desk staff seemed slammed, but I still didn't have too much of a wait. As I was situated by the hygienist for my bi-annual cleaning, I was pleasantly surprised there was a helper (you know - one that helps with suction and whatnot). It seems rare these days to have one and the last time I had a cleaning at another office, my face/ torso got so soaked they had to change my bib. Anyhow the cleaning was pretty thorough, and Dr Rong was a nice and informative. It felt like a luxury experience which is weird as the office is tucked in the center of Chinatown. read more

Paid in full because they weren't sure if my insurance company would cover even though I found them through ZocDoc as a dentist who covered me. The insurance company later reimbursed them for part of the service, and they never reimbursed me. I've been trying to be reimbursed for over one year now and they never follow up. Always the same response: someone will reach out later. Not the person who I'm speaking to's job or they can't help. They'll look into it and reach out to me. After I visited for a cleaning and fill-ins I constantly have one crack between two teeth that always gets large pieces of food stuck. My wife who also visited has very sensitive teeth to this day. We called asking if this was normal and they said we'd have to come back in but after our initial experience with them we were worried they'd take our money again. There are other reviews I'm noticing now that have had the same experience. So both of us have long standing issues that have never been the same after visiting. I visited Dr. Shu Ping yesterday for my annual cleanse. They moved into an independent, spacious office. The number of patients rooms are large and spotless. The dental hygiene at and staff took time to clean every single tooth. It wasn't ever rushed like a 20minutes cleanse at other places. After the hygienists cleaned my teeth, dr. Rong would come in to check the health of my teeth and any next steps. Everyone is super nice and professional. Dr. Rong leads a great staff with high standards. In Chinatown, there's a lot of rude front staff when they pick up the phone but never at this office. I have been coming back for a few years now even though it's 1 hour commute. This office continues to deliver and that's the differentiator for my continuous return. Thank you! read more

I got a new dental insurance so had to find a new dentist. I decided to come here because the timing works best out of the few options I found. Also I keep seeing Dr. Rong's TV/newspaper ads. Yelp has high reviews too. There were just a lot of small details about my visit that bothered me. First of all I wasn't seeing Dr. Rong, saw another dentist at her office, Dr. Yan. It's fine, I'm just here for teeth cleaning, but I wish I knew ahead of time I wasn't seeing her. When I arrived at the room, it bothered me how there's no extra chair or shelf to put my belongings. Not everyone has a chaperone with them to hold on to things. I was directed to the edge of their counter to put my stuff - coat and bag. It was less than 10in wide which I can assure I can't fit a bigger winter coat in that corner. To the left is the window and to the right is the sink. I don't want my stuff falling towards either side. For the first visit, the assistant took more than a dozen x-rays. It wasn't exactly comfortable but it is what it is. The monitor above the patient seat was like 4:3 Windows XP era monitor. I mean I don't need 4K to see x-rays of my teeth, but I still like better technology. Then Dr. Yan came in to discuss my x-rays and if I had any questions. I flat out said I was here because of wisdom tooth pain. I'm amused but don't appreciate how he was more intrigued by my crown. I mean I appreciate the comments he gave for that but can we focus on what I came here for first. He gave some comments on the situation of my wisdom teeth, but I had to be the one to ask follow up questions on suggestions and next steps. Like I know he can't take them out for me but what's his take on which ones I should take out and when. Afterwards a hygienist came in, Hoi Ting. No joke, this is my first time getting teeth cleaned by a hygienist instead of a dentist. You would think that someone who does this all day would be good at it. I would say this might be my most uncomfortable teeth cleaning experience. Like it was worse than the time I didn't go to the dentist for two years (I know it's bad don't yell at me). I understand that the water spray gun thing is supposed to get under your gums for a deeper clean, but it was awfully prying. You know how there's the suction tube hanging at the edge of your mouth during the procedure to suck up fluid, the assistant held another one to chase the water gun along the way. With two suction tubes you would think my mouth will be super dry, but nope I felt many drops of water trickle down my throat. That was uncomfortable. I kept thinking if I need to pause the cleaning to swallow/spit out the water. I ended up getting thru it. Also the second suction tube kept getting at my lips and tongue... When I rinsed my mouth at the end I needed like three cups of water because I kept on spitting out brown stuff. Like I didn't see any pink/blue toothpaste bits. Ok maybe it's my blood, but I saw individual redder strings that looked more like blood. Does blood turn brown that quickly over 10-15min?? My mouth didn't taste like iron either. Idk I was shocked. Also have to say my teeth didn't FEEL extra clean after the cleaning. Like I'm sure it is especially in the molars but I couldn't feel or see the squeakiness I was asked to rinse my mouth three times in this sitting. The first time was before x-rays. I was asked to rinse this solution thing that reduced the bacteria in my mouth. This second time was before or after Dr. Yan idr. It was just plain water at the little sink next to the dental chair. Same thing for the third time after my cleaning. I don't appreciate how I had to press the button to dispense water for myself. Imagine I was a 5 year old, would I be expected to press it myself? Or maybe a 80 year old granny who's not good with buttons? After cleaning I went outside to the front desk. This place isn't big but I almost forgot which door led back to the front. I asked if I needed a referral to see an oral surgeon for wisdom teeth removal. The front desk didn't give me a letter, only a slip with the surgeon's address and their contact. I like getting two options, but I also don't get why I had to be the one to communicate my needs for a referral. Did no one communicate this - assistant, doctor, and hygienist?? Also, even the assistant at Ray Cheng commented, oh no referral?Just that slip? The front desk lady also asked me if I want to book for my next cleaning 6 months out. I declined saying I'll call when time comes. I guess it was nice she wasn't pushy about it. Also I left without any toothbrush or toothpaste. I usually dread going to the dentist but I can definitely say that since seeing Dr. Rong I dread it a lot less! I went for a cleaning last week and then for a follow up appointment for cavities. Her front staff was very nice and polite and helped me with some questions I had on my forms. I was seen on my appointment time and did not have to wait. For my cleaning, the hygienist was very thorough and explained to me what she was doing as she was doing it. Then, Dr. Rong came in and introduced herself to me and was very professional. She looked over my x-rays and found that I had a couple of cavities that needed to be fixed. I made an appointment for the following week and had the same experience with the front staff and not having to wait the second time. During the filling, Dr. Rong made me feel comfortable and told me to raise my hand at any time if I felt discomfort. She took the time to make sure the fillings felt ok before finishing. I wanted to give Dr. Rong another chance and have her correct the work she did. And also, to see if I was wrong about her lack of friendliness. I figured it may have been cultural differences and Asians from Asia were different. But this time, it's her staff and I didn't get beyond the phone calls from scheduling and being rescheduled. Her receptionist, some older Chinese woman is very non-understanding. She claimed Dr. Rong did nothing wrong and that I would have to pay out of pocket in order to have Dr. Rong fix a tooth she had worked on where the filling cracked in less than 2 months and fell out in 4 months being that insurance won't cover the same tooth twice in one year. Because Dr. Rong's office would not take responsibility, I went somewhere else and paid out of pocket to have the tooth fixed. There was no way I was going to pay out of pocket when they took my insurance the first time around and couldn't get the job done. Their ethics and business practices are lacking. Most dentists do not charge for work on the same tooth if it fell out or cracked in less than 0 to 6 months. It has been only 4.25 months but became over 4.50 months because THEY insisted on rescheduling me due to Dr. Rong having an emergency. Oh, and the same receptionist dared to say it's been too long when I asked why it would not be free of charge. True, I didn't return when it first cracked due to complications with my job, but I had told Dr. Rong during my first visit that I had a difficult job, can't get time off and that is why I needed her to work on the right tooth-see my first review. I also didn't know what was going on at first and experienced a popping sound. Then weeks later, I experienced another pop. After that I knew it was cracked. Still, I tried to return within 4 months. Overall, they seem quick, callous, and their appointments overlaps. Dr. Rong had went to work on someone else and addressed staff while she was working on me, which didn't make me feel confident that she was focused with my cleaning and (1) 2 surface filing when she returned to me. Unfortunately I never saw Dr. Rong because when I spoke to the receptionist about my appt. that day she told me that my insurance would not cover the exam. I questioned how she came up with that info. and she insisted that my policy stated I am only allowed 1 exam every 6 months and that I already was billed. for an exam last month. I told her that was eligible for another exam and the previous exam was an emergency but she refused to accept that and said I would have to pay out of pocket. Needless to say my appt. was cancelled. I called my insurance who confirmed that I was eligible for another exam because the previous exam was due to an emergency visit. I am allowed more than 1 exam for every 6 months depending on the diagnosis or reason for visit. The receptionist spoke broken English and did not have the knowledge or experience to advise me the way she did. It's not only unprofessional but also off putting to patients seeking a Dentist. Sadly it has hindered Dr. Rong's practice in obtaining this patient and I am sure many others. read more

The staff and Dr. Shu Ping Rong provided impeccable customer service, highly recommended! The office decor was modern, simple and clean, and did not have that traditional dental smell unlike the prior dental offices I've been to. Dr. Shu Ping Rong thoroughly explain the x-rays to me before she proceeded with my cleaning. She is very professional and spends a great amount of time explaining everything I need to know in maintaining a good oral hygiene. Clean office, minimal wait time, nice view from the dental chair. The dental cleaning was awful and very painful. They do some sort of dry cleaning, it was like using a dry wood sander on my teeth. Makes me cringe even thinking about it now. The tools were so loud and with them working next to my ears, I couldn't even hear anything they were saying. Dental assistant seemed very nervous and had to retake my x-rays several times. ZocDoc falsifies available appointments. I took off work to go to an appointment, only to find out a couple hours before the appointment that Dr. Rong had nothing available for four more weeks. ZocDoc blamed it on Dr. Rong, and when I tried following up with the dentist office, I never got a call back. So not sure who to blame, but expect at least a month to get an appointment. Dr. Rong seemed knowledgeable and friendly, but that didn't really outweigh the terrible cleaning they did. read more

This review is not for Dr. Rong but the front desk staff. They mis-scheduled my appointment twice already. It doesn't help that I wasn't informed till the day of when i'm nearly at the dental office. I wouldn't have been so pissed if they've informed me earlier so i didn't have to take off from work. Dr. Rong herself is friendly and professional that's why i've kept going back. But now that she has so many other hygienists in the office, front desk told me she only handles surgeries, not cleaning so i'm forced to choose one of the other hygienists. On my rescheduled appointment, was told i had a cavity and i wanted Dr. Rong to handle the filling but nope, she wasn't even doing that. So i'm hesitant to go back now. What's the point of having the dental office under your name if you're passing the "simple" procedures off to the other dentist and hygienists. read more

Dr Rong is amazing! my first experience started after a dentist up in union square completely messed up the diagnosis and treatment for what ultimately ended up requiring a root canal (he insisted on filling in a huge lesion instead of immediately referring me to get a root canal). short story, I ended up in tears and came to Dr. Rong after seeing her advertisements on television and couldn't be happier with the service. she has completely revamped my teeth- excellent bedside manner from both Dr. Rong and her assistants, and her receptionists have been nothing short of friendly and helpful. the office is clean and the tools are new. I've been coming here for about two years and have referred my friends and my family members here. and I've been cavity free ever since! read more

I normally wouldn't review a visit to the dentist. But, I have to make a major exception in this case! Dr. Rong is just awesome. The office is great, everyone that works there is a professional and clearly passionate about what they do. If you're thinking about it - just pick up the phone right now and set an appointment. There's nothing to think about. This is the right choice. The appointment process is quick and efficient, the paperwork is minimal and the staff will guide you along the way with a smile. I've been guilty (as much as the next person) about forgetting to set dentist appointments in the past, but I can guarantee that will not be the case going forward. Now I wish I would have reviewed some of those less than stellar experiences with other dentist - just so I can really shine a light on how Dr. Rong's office is a complete 180 and is clearly not your run of the mill visit to the dentist. Honestly, it takes a lot for me to gush about something as mundane as dental hygiene, but this is one of those times that I'm really shocked to find out what I've been missing. Last week I had to have a root canal performed and I'm really happy I visited Dr. Rong's practice. It was my first visit, and it went very well. Dr. Coyle, who performed the canal, was thoughtful and thorough and the technicians and staff were friendly and seemed really good at their jobs. My tooth, which hurt before the procedure, feels like new. I'll go back to this dentist for a long time. read more

The new office is the largest one I have visited in Manhattan dentistry. And the environment is also great. Flowers are placed on each table, which looks very clean and tidy. Of course ^_^ There is a discount of 600 for dental implants, which attracts me the most. read more

The front desk receptionist speaks fluent English, Mandarin, and Cantonese. I use Cigna insurance to cover my dental service. They check due diligently on my service eligibility and explain clearly to me on insurance coverage. The staffs are friendly and passionate. They make the appointment process and paperwork seamless. Dr. Rong is an extremely caring and professional practitioner. Dr. Rong holds herself up to the highest standard and ethic in practice from most practitioners I've seen in the past. Dr. Rong is patience and very knowable when comes to explain my X-rays. For example, she took time and explained in great details on area of gravity and the steps/procedures she would work on the teeth. The office is clean and the tools are new. DO NOT COME HERE!! I was never afraid to go to the dentist but Shu Pings Rongs Office has made me terrified to go to the dentist. I came here a long time ago as a regular client to get my teeth cleaned, get cavities filled, and a root canal done. At the time, Dr. Rong hired a NEW MALE dentist because she didn't want to be the one doing cavity fillings anymore. That MALE DENTIST gave me some anesthesia to fill some cavities and it was super painful. I started tearing up and nearly jumped out of the chair because it hurt that bad. The dentist did not stop to ask if I was ok or if I needed a break. He never introduced his name and was very quiet and awkward. The next day I COULD NOT OPEN MY JAW ON THE SIDE THE DENTIST PUT THE ANESTHESIA IN. I COULDNT OPEN MY JAW FOR WEEKS. I went back to talk to Shu Ping Rong and she said it was "normal" and it "happens sometimes". That MALE DENTIST was not present to apologize during that meeting either. This is what we call MALPRACTICE. After not being able to open my jaw for WEEKS, I went to see an NYU Oral Maxillofacial specialist for a second opinion, the doctor at NYU told me that Shu Ping Rong was clearly being dishonest and didn't want to own up to her employee's mistake/her practice's mistake. I was lucky enough to be able to open my jaws after OVER a month. I COULD NOT EAT OR OPEN THAT SIDE OF MY JAW FOR OVER A MONTH!!!!!!!!!! HOW COULD A MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL SAY "IT HAPPENS SOMETIMES", LIE TO MY FACE, NOT APOLOGIZE OR DO A FOLLOW UP PHONE CALL AFTER AN INCIDENT LIKE THAT?!?!?! Every time clients would go into her office, her receptionists always tell ppl "XYZ procedure isn't covered by insurance" and ppl would be forced to pay cash for expensive dental procedures. A huge scam. They have this envelope filled with just straight cash in the drawer with the receptionists. Sus? Very much so. In the past Shu Ping Rong would tell me to get braces when I had braces for years and my teeth are practically super straight. She tried to get me to get braces so her office could make more money off me!! Don't come here. Chinatown has plenty of other dentists that won't lock your jaw for weeks!!! read more

I enjoy coming here to receive my teeth cleaning. I always try to get the hygienist Hoi Ting for it since she provides meticulous attention. She usually asks whether I'm feeling uncomfortable at all during the process, which I appreciate. I've been to other dental places and many give minimal effort to the procedure, so I can say for a fact that Hoi Ting has good work ethic and I trust her with the cleaning as she truly inspects every tooth. I would recommend her for anyone who wants their teeth feeling like it has been properly cleaned. read more
