Gramercy Smiles refused to clean my teeth after I opted out of a routine panoramic X-Ray screening. The decision was made by Marina Mats, the owner of the practice. While it's her prerogative to suggest patients receive carcinogenic ionizing radiation, it's the patient's right to decline that exposure. I felt it was inconsiderate and disrespectful to refuse to follow through on a cleaning appointment I had already booked and shown up for, since it would have been very easy for them to call me beforehand and let me know they were refusing my business. I had made this preference known in many prior appointments and it was never an issue, I simply was asked to sign a liability waiver and my cleaning continued apace. Not sure what changed, and Marina did not explain herself and instead passed the decision along through a subordinate while she remained in her office. I wonder if other patients consider it odd that a heavy lead blanket is required to block radiation from entering the body while the X-Rays are allowed to pass freely through the teeth, bones, eyes, and brain. I wonder if they are aware of Alice Stewart's research at Oxford in the 1950s which demonstrated how X-Rays were associated with dramatically higher levels of leukemia, miscarriages, malformations, brain cancer, and mental retardation. I remain surprised and disturbed that a "holistic" dentist would deny a patient care after they decline X-Rays. However, Gramercy Smiles had other practices that I found odd, such as routinely recommending fluoride and fillings for "micro cavities" which other dentists could not detect. I will not be returning there and cannot give an endorsement of their practice. read more

The office is clean and very hygienic. You FEEL you are in good hands when you're there because of the ambiance, but it's obvious to me now that all they try to do is get your trust and steal your money. This place is a money pit. I didn't really realize it and assumed all dental practices were a money suck because of shitty dental insurance in the US until I moved and had to find a new dentist. When I initially came in a few years back, I knew I had some work to be done on my teeth as I hadn't been in a few years. I also told them I was preparing to get Invisalign. I truly believe that they took this opportunity to sell me on every single procedure that they probably had despite the fact that it may not have been necessary. I came in for a cleaning and they told me I needed to get a deep cleaning on all four quadrants of my mouth and to get six cavities filled which is crazy because I'm a very healthy eater and super hygienic. I thought OK well they are the experts... who am I to question. On top of the suspicious number of procedures. Each procedure took an extraordinarily long amount of time. For a cavity to be filled it would take at least an hour each. So long, I fell asleep a few times. I've had cavities filled before and it would always take 20 minutes... I wasn't sure why it was so lengthy here. Then is the cost. When I would ask before each procedure what the cost would be I would get insane ranges from $200-$1000. When I complained about this to a dentist and how difficult it was to budget for such a wide range, she said "you pay for your hair color don't you? you should budget for your teeth". I was shocked. The difference is that I need my teeth to live and my hair I can choose not to dye if I don't have the money or time. I am also told how much my hair color/cut costs in advance... this was entirely inappropriate. About $4000, a pandemic and a move to Brooklyn later I am just now realizing how terrible my experience was here. I went to a new dentist who said that one of my seals had been broken and I needed a deeper cleaning ( I hadn't been to a dentist since before pandemic). He filled the cavity with the broken seal in about 10 minutes and he gave me a deep cleaning that was included in my regular dental cleaning. The price was set before the appointment at a very reasonable and low cost ($200) and there were no surprises. Better yet, in one visit I got the ok for Invisalign and finally starting my treatment after 4 years. In conclusion, don't go here if you care about your money or time. Get a second opinion on anything and everything they recommend. Go to someone who actually cares about you achieving your dental goals and not someone who is trying to line their pockets/ pay for their gramercy/flatiron rent costs. What a waste of time and $$$. read more

Stay away. Truly bizarre and predatory experience with Gramercy Smiles. GS diagosed me with a number of "micro cavities" after bullying me into expensive and unnecessary x-rays. This seemed kind of odd so I went to another dentist in the city to get a second opinion. Well, the second dentist gave me a clean bill of health and warned me that dentists like GS use predatory practices like recommending unnessary work to take advantage of clients. He warned that filling "micro cavities" is actually riskier and creates more damage to your teeth. Yikes! GS also charged like hundreds of dollars to fill a regular cavity--like 2-4x the price I've been quoted at other dentists. A final anecdote: When I visited, they had sugary granola bars and other sweet snacks avaliable in the waiting room. Hilarious to see a dentist handing out essentially candy, I suppose they're really embracing the cartoon villan persona. Everyone at Gramercy Smiles is incredibly pleasant to deal with. They were very thorough with my cleaning, and the dentist explained everything in my x-rays in great detail to make sure I was well-aware of what they were recommending and why. I went to have cavities filled a few weeks later, and the dentist I saw then, Dr. Alexandra, was so patient and gentle. I am a terrible dental patient- I have a very low pain tolerance and am very sensitive to anesthetics/Novocain. She explained everything she was doing, and was willing to proceed at a pace I was comfortable with. She made the process completely painless which is a feat with me. Separately, I had a number of questions about my insurance coverage that were not easy to navigate, and Shirley was SO patient and went back and forth with me numerous times to make sure I was clear on what would be covered and what would be paid out of pocket. She was in contact with my insurance company multiple times and was so nice and positive about it the whole time. Everyone at this office is so nice. They keep the place very clean and inviting. So I got a new job in October and needed to go for my bi-annual cleaning. I chose Gramercy Smiles for three reasons: 1) They accept my insurance (Delta Dental) 2) They're close to my office 3) I see their office from the gym across the street every time I'm there Anyway, I made an appointment on Zoc Doc, but since it was for a cleaning, I met with a hygienist instead. She was very nice, and it was actually the most thorough cleaning I've ever had. I'll spare you the details, but my teeth came out feeling sparkly clean. Everything is modern and they seem to really care about their patients. They have computers with your records in every room, on which they can also show your X-rays. They provide you with sunglasses so you're not blinded by the dentist light. They give you a nice care pack when you leave. The receptionists know you by name. They have coffee and Chewy bars in the lobby free for the taking. It was so good, I had to go back the next week. Actually, I needed to get a filling replaced and to get a mold for a mouthguard. Again, it was painless in all ways (not just because of the local anesthesia). Walk in, wait 5 minutes, and go in to see the dentist. Super efficient. Came back again to pick up my mouthguard. Quick in and out. I have no frame of reference for their service prices, but it seemed more expensive than the dentists I've been to in the past. But definitely ask them what your insurance covers and they'll be happy to look it up for you. Then you can decide if you want to proceed. read more

Hands down the best dental experience I've ever had! This is my second time visiting this dental office and both times have been nothing but exceptional. Here are some of the deets: I had an appointment 11:30am appointment, showed up at 11:20 and within 5 minutes I was in the chair, within 2 minutes of being in the chair the Dentist came in and started to discuss the procedure. Once the procedure was discussed she carefully numbed me twice between 3-5mins intervals. I felt nothing not even the needle. After a few mins we started the procedure where I felt absolutely nothing other than the tools touching other areas of my mouth. WARNING! STAY AWAY FROM GRAMERCY SMILES -- THEIR DOCTORS LIE ABOUT CAVITIES TO MAKE $$$!!!!! Since moving to NYC a couple years ago, I've been trying to find a dentist that I really like. I gave Gramercy Smiles a shot because of their high ratings and "holistic approach" claim. I booked an appointment with Dr. Koster on ZocDoc, and went in. Dr. Koster did not see me -- I was seen by another dentist, and a hygienist who had a cold and coughed in my face the entire time. I asked her what sorts of things they do differently at Gramercy Smiles with their "holistic approach" and she couldn't name one thing. I'm not sure if the holistic thing is just marketing or if this hygienist was just totally uneducated about it, but either way, not good. Now for the worst part. I have a clean bill of health and haven't had a cavity in about 10 years. When the dentist came in to review my X-rays with me, she told me I had 5 CAVITIES. That did not seem right to me at all, and I had a mini break down in the chair. I made an appointment with the front desk to get the cavities filled, and went home totally in shock. This was right before the holidays, and because of my packed schedule I ended up cancelling my appointment. The office hounded me to come in before the end of the year so insurance could cover the majority of the cost, and then I could get the remaining cavities filled early the following year. It seemed like they were looking out for me, but now I know it was because they were trying to squeeze as much money out of me as they could. Luckily, I went with my gut and did not re-schedule. Instead, I arranged to see my dentist friend -- a Penn graduate who just started practicing in NYC. When she reviewed my X-rays (I had Gramercy Smiles forward me the X-rays they took) she said that I MIGHT HAVE ONE CAVITY. That's IT. MAYBE ONE. Upon further investigation, I only did have one cavity which she filled. She warned me that NYC dentists are notorious for "finding extra cavities" because they need to pay their staff. This dentist from Gramercy Smiles violated her oath as a doctor and fully intended to drill into my teeth to make money!!!! I am counting my lucky stars that I did not go through with my appointment and avoided spending a ton of $$ and having my teeth drilled into and filled for NO REASON AT ALL. I went here a few times in 2019-2020 and wouldn't recommend them for anything beyond a cleaning. I went in for a cleaning and check up after not having gone in a few years. They tell me I have 4 cavities (2 on either side) and that I have gum issues and need a deep cleaning. I was immediately surprised because I've never had a cavity before and I don't really have any pain or concerns. But on the other hand it has been about 5 years since I'd gone to a dentist so I figured I better trust the experts. They deep cleaned one side of my mouth to help with my gums and that went smoothly, though was pretty expensive and in hindsight I wonder if it was clinically necessary. They said I could come back for the second half of the deep gum cleaning and while they are there they can do 2 fillings on the already cleaned part of my mouth. I said sure thing. I meet the dentist and she says that she's going to put in the fillings for the wrong side of my mouth! I tell her no the other side because immediately after the fillings I was going to do the deep gum cleaning on the other side and it can't be on both sides. She says ok, doesn't apologize for almost making a mistake, and acts very annoyed that I corrected her. I literally almost bolted after that and she is like chill out so I try to get over it. Then she says we have to first remove my old fillings. I tell her I've never had fillings before. She tells me I probably just don't remember getting them because she definitely sees them there. What??? Again I almost get up to go and she's like "relax relax let's just see whats there". She then starts scraping at my teeth and it's very unpleasant and painful. I'm not even sure she can find the cavity she's acting really weird. Eventually she realizes it's a protective coating they put on my teeth as a kid. God only knows if she was supposed to remove it. My bite after the filling feels different. They then file the filling down to "fix it" and it seems worse?? To this day my bite does not feel right. Then covid happened and I never went back to get the other two fillings. Just recently went to a different dentist and he tells me I have perfect teeth and that I definitely don't need 2 more fillings. He also tells me my gums are perfect, no sign of disease. I really liked the hygienists and I'm sure some of the dentists in this practice are great. The admin are friendly and the office is clean. But this place is a factory with new people everyday and you never know who you're going to get and some of these dentists are anything but trustworthy. I've switched insurance a few times and each time they've looked up my new provider and helped make sure my visit would be covered. I am obsessed with my dentist. Did I just say that? After around 25 years of intense fear of any dental procedure, I've found the dentist that makes all of my nervousness go away. I recommend Gramercy Smiles to everyone. Genetically, I have pretty weak teeth and the dental insurance that my parents had when I was growing up wasn't the best. I had tons of cavities and needed a crown after cracking a tooth on a popcorn kernel before I was even in high school. For a long time, the dentist was just equated to pain and suffering. Combine that with shoddy dentistry, I've spent a few years cleaning up the work of my childhood dentists. Gramercy Smiles has worked with me for the past 2 years to get my house in order. Every cleaning I have there leaves my mouth feeling great and the hygienists remember you from the other times you come in. Say what you will, but having someone remember the conversation we had last time makes me feel like I'm not a client you're shuffling through the system. Importantly, they're realistic about the urgency of dental work and how they can work with insurance to benefit you. I've gotten fillings fixed, learned the root canal I had done from that darn popcorn kernel was incomplete and worked with them for a crown replacement to correct the one that has been improperly sitting in my mouth. The only reason I am not giving them 1 star is because both women I met with were so nice and it isn't their fault the front desk staff is deceitful. There was some error on Zocdoc who flagged them as in network. I was told when I get there that it's OK because they have the same contracted rates as Aetna. They make me come in twice to see two different dentists and then call to let me know the root canal is $1800!! The contracted Aetna rate is $850!! She kept saying oh but it's top quality blah blah blah. The original stance that they have the same rates was a clear lie hoping someone is naive enough to pay it. So they pretty much abused my insurance, billing Aetna so now I only have $500 left on my yearly max. And then I go to another dentist who said I didn't even need a root canal. read more

Truly bizarre experience from beginning to end. I found this place on zocdoc and scheduled an appointment for a cleaning. I received a text the day before my appt from the receptionist saying she's been trying to call. I responded that I hadn't received any calls, but I nevertheless confirmed my appt and told her I would see them the following day. When I arrived, they noted again they tried to get a hold of me, but then didn't expand on why? They acknowledged the appt was already confirmed. As the assistant sets me up in the exam room, she asked, hesitantly, "so now we do X-rays?" I said "No, I'm just here for a cleaning." The blood drained from her face and she ran out the room. The Dentist sped in after her, flustered that I wouldn't agree to X-rays. She said if I don't do X-rays then she won't know if I need root canals or crowns. That seemed a bit drastic and a scare tactic used to upcharge patients there for routine cleanings. At this point I'm suspicious and absolutely refuse to consent to X-rays. I told her she can take a look during the cleaning to see if anything needs further attention before jumping straight to X-rays. She took a look, one filling needs repair. She said without X-rays to look further, she just has no idea what's happening between my teeth. Once again she pushed and I refused X-rays as nothing alarming was found during the cursory exam. Defeated, she left and enter the hygienist. Who greeted me with "so no X-rays today? No chance you could be pregnant?" Why...are the X-rays flipped on right now just to micro dose me with radiation then slip the charge on my bill? For the love of god, no, just clean my teeth. I will say, out of the whole lot of x-ray pushers, the hygienist was the most professional. She was very thorough and cognizant of any pain I may have been feeling throughout the cleaning. Very lovely woman who just happens to have fallen into a shady practice. The Dentist did not check her work, just dismissed me after. As I checked out with reception, they said they'd be making an appt for X-rays for me. I said let's hold off. They begrudgingly told me my insurance covered the cleaning and they'd be in touch via text and phone calls about future appts. I will never return. I've never felt so uncomfortable in a medical setting. Four individuals attempted to push X-rays on me. No means no. Time for office-wide training on patient consent. read more

I called Gramercy Smiles about a month ago when I broke a tooth. They called me back right when they opened (I called in the early morning), had me explain my situation, and had me send them pictures to decide if it was urgent enough for me to come in immediately. It was, and they fit me in on the same day. I ended up having to go back a few times to get the problem completely fixed and they were always able to set me up with convenient appointment times (and the wait time is almost non-existent). They are just fantastic all around. Milana at the front desk went way out of her way on that first day going back and forth with me all day to make sure my teeth would get taken care of, and everyone there has treated me the same way. They were able to set me up with a line of credit so that I could afford the procedure that I needed. I just can't say enough good things about how professional and accommodating they are. Dr. Sonya, who I saw first, and Dr. Tadros who fixed my teeth (and made them look fantastic- you can't tell that half of my tooth is fake) were both wonderful. I went to Gramercy Smiles for a few years then had to leave due a change in my insurance. After trying a few other dentists I was less than satisfied so I went back to Gramercy and found out that they could see me out of network for a reasonable rate. I'm so thrilled to be back. They don't overly recommend dental work and they're not too casual - they are a perfect blend, only doing work when it's really needed. The hygienist gives the best cleaning I've ever had. The office had exceptional COVID precautions. All of the staff are truly delightful to work with. I've been to several dentists in nyc and this is by far the best. I highly recommend them. read more

I feel like a masochist, rating my wisdom teeth extraction five stars, but the overall experience was really as pleasant as possible. Certainly better than expected. Dr. Linsky is an excellent oral surgeon. If you have extra teeth and are in NYC, I highly recommend him. (+) He is very patient with absurd questions such as: "Are you really going to put that shoehorn in my mouth?" "Local anesthesia--so I will be awake to hear all the crunchy noises?" (There will be no crunching involved) "What is the meltaway suture thread made of?" (He told me but I have no idea) "How long will it take for the stitches to dissolve?" (About 7 days) "My heartrate feels... funny..." (That's normal with the anesthetic) "What are the benefits v. risks of leaving vs. extracting my bottom teeth, are they too close to the nerve?" (+) Very reassuring and non-creepy. Great bedside manner, unlike some healthcare providers who seem more interested in getting in bed with you than staying bedside. (+) He lets you know what to expect every step of the procedure. (+) The topical anesthetic tasted like pina colada. Starting the weekend early, alright! (-) The local anesthetic was less tasty. (-) The gauze makes it feel like I have tampons in my mouth. Ending my weekend before it starts. Cry. (+) They provided all the aftercare info and supplies (like painkillers, instructions, gauze, instant ice pack) in a handy kit. (+) The entire consultation + procedure (bony extraction for two completely impacted wisdom teeth) was done in under an hour. Regarding the rest of the practice: (+) the waiting room has complimentary freshly brewed Peet's Coffee (+) good clean magazine selection, and hand sanitizer if you feel like it's not clean enough (+) they are on ZocDoc and easy to book (-) I filled out intake information online, then had to do it all again on paper when I arrived (+) staff is very communicative, friendly, and efficient. (+) staff contacts you by phone, text, and email. (+) very thorough and informative (and quick!) about insurance coverage--they made all the calls and gave me numbers before I agreed to go ahead with the procedure so that there were no billing surprises Really, the best customer service, most comprehensive dental care suite, and most nicely furnished office. I chipped my wisdom tooth one early morning and I was desperate to find a dentist close to me. The minute I entered Gramercy Smiles I knew this was an excellent establishment. Something about the vibe , it was just extremely positive. Perhaps it was the very attentive girls who immediately acknowledged me when I entered their office, maybe it was how clean everything was or maybe a combination of everything working in beautiful unison. I , like others, have had my share of terrible experiences and I was absolutely terrified of what came next. They did an amazing job of calming me and assuring the anxiety/pain issues would be addressed. I've heard all this before which is why I have trust issues but after my experience with Gramercy Smiles I have learned to trust again. The Doctors were warm and patient. Everyone was really really REALLY friendly, almost like this place was something out of a Romantic Comedy. I expected someone to propose to someone else in the middle of my procedure and ...I 'd be ok with that. Billing was never an issue, I knew going in it would cost me and I was prepared for that. In fact I preferred the extra cost since I considered this luxury service and frankly I'd rather pay more for top service than go into some butcher shop and get butchered by a butcher. I can't remember the Doctors name who worked on me but he was amazing, totally listened when I said I had pain and adjusted the drugs accordingly, the dude even gave me his personal cell phone if there were any problems. Service like that is just...beyond anything I've ever experienced. I will go back to get some other work done , these guys are the best of the best of the best. Thank you Gramercy Smiles. read more
