I have lived in Northampton my whole life, never even new this place existed. For Christmas I bought my daughter a pair of Bandolini boots. She instantly fell in love with them. After wearing them once the zipper split, I tried to exchange them but they were sold out. I brought them to Shu-fix, he fixed them in two minutes, when I asked him what I owed him he said "happy new year"!!!! My daughter is so happy and I was blown away. We have no shoe repair shop in my town, so I found him on the internet. I called him, and mailed him a pair of Allen-Edmunds shoes (which cost $250 to $300 new) because the soles were coming unglued. I mailed them to him, and when we spoke a few days later, he said he could reglue them, but recommended instead to replace them with new leather soles and heels, because the soles were too thin and weren't worth repairing. I was thinking, "Uh-oh - he's right, but that's going to be too expensive - Allen-Edmunds charges $125 for this service." He gave me a price of $45, including return shipping, and the shoes are now like new. Great work and a reasonable price. read more

Never going back here, and will not be recommending this place to anyone. Don't believe the hype of the majority. The reason why this place is rated so highly is because it is one of two shoe repair businesses in the Five College Area. This place seems to have amassed a community following, which doesn't give new customers a realistic truthful sense of this business. Shoe repair businesses functioning in larger cities that I've lived in and visited, are held to a completely different standard to due competition and the populations they service. The shoe cobbler has very poor communication skills for someone running a business. Very poor customer service and seems to have immense difficulty answering questions and remembering customers requests correctly. I went to get my shoes resoled and heels changed due to very minor over pronation. He agreed that he would use rubber to resole the shoes; however, he charged me $20 to change the heels on my shoes when it should only cost ~$15. Just to be sure I went to Paul's shoe repair to get a second quote, after they were finished and he said he would only charge me $15 for the heels. When I came back 10 days later to pick up my shoes, I was that he did the complete opposite of what I asked for and agreed upon. I asked for a vibram sole instead of leather. When I come in to pick up my shoes, lo and behold there are leather soles on my shoes. When he finally remembered what we agreed upon, he said he would fix it and I told him I would come back in another two hours. Why it it that when I came back two hours and 15 minutes later, he still was not finished with my shoes? I stepped in the shop and he pretended not to see me even though I was in plain view, then he had the nerve to ask me if I had any "extra time". He stopped working on another pair of shoes and "fixed" my shoes in 3 minutes. He did a HORRENDOUS job. There was absolutely no attention to detail from him and he got glue all of the outer edges of my shoes. When I pointed that out he tried telling me that the glue was there before, which is not possible since the soles were sewn on in the first place. When I kept persisting, He said okay I'll fix it, then he began sanding away the glue and the suede. When I told him that was enough, he said "No! This is especially made for suede". After this guy was done, he handed my shoes back, stopped and stared; I guess he was expecting me to say thank you? I was fuming at that point mumbled thanks and stepped out. I'm still pretty upset, as he destroyed a pair of $150 shoes with utter carelessness. Bottom line is that I would recommend people in the Five College Area to just go to Paul's shoe repair in Amherst. Although it will cost more, just send your shoes out to your trusted cobbler, or find a cobbler who you know for a fact does excellent work. Make sure that he is able to communicate with you properly about what he's going to do to your shoes, and make sure you have proof through pictures and through thorough investigation. read more

I brought a pair of boots a week ago, and the owner of the place fixed very fast. However, the zipper he put was loose and the boot looked funny as compared to the other one. I returned to the store and politely asked the man if he could fix the problem. HE LOST IT. He started yelling at me that I was being picky and slammed by boots in a pile of shoes. I asked him not to yell at me, and he kept on saying how STUPID I was for requesting such a thing, that he was, however, willing to do. I took me boots back and left. I bought a pair of boots from Ninewest that looked good but were too big around the calf area. Shu fix took care of that. He reduced it where the zipper was situated and you cannot tell that the boots did not come that way. He did however not have the boots ready on the day promised but made up for it by stretching them out at the bunion area for free. I will be sure to call beforehand next time as I do not live in the Noho area. I will definitely use him again and I'm so glad that I wont have to return boots just because of a wider calf area. Of course they have to be worth paying $60 for the adjustment though. read more

I dropped a pair of boots off to have the heel fixed on Tuesday. The owner asked when I wanted them done by, and I asked for Saturday. They were ready for me when I went in, and beautifully done. So happy to have my boots back and ready to wear. Especially since I just got them and the heel broke on the second wear. I'll be back with other pairs of shoes! read more

I've lived in the Northampton area my entire life. I had always heard good things about Shu-Fix so I brought two purses to them to have the zippers replaced. It cost $25 and when I picked up the purses I could see no evidence that anything had been done - same zippers - no new thread. I figured they might have a special tool or something. Anyway, the zippers popped open on the first use. I called and said I wanted my money back. The woman said fine. My husband stopped in to pick up the money and the man wouldn't refund it unless I brought the purses back. He yelled non-stop so I couldn't even explain that I wouldn't try and get that small amount of money back if they zippers were fixed. Anyway, slammed phone on me. I guess I'm out $25 because I have no interest in getting yelled at again. I would suggest looking into the shoe place in Amherst because I sure am. read more

Full admission, I was in the wrong here in SOME of my actions, I admit that, but I feel it wasn't 100% my fault. I dropped off a pair of shoes to be re-soled. It was a pair I liked (not LOVED) and couldn't find online anymore, they probably cost $60 brand new. I took them in expecting to be quoted $20 or so, but was told it would be $60 to re-sole them (the price of a brand new pair). I was shown a black and brown option. The soles seemed very "cheap", but since I couldn't find a new pair online, I said ok, give me the brown ones (they were brown shoes). While waiting for my pickup date, I found the shoes were restocked online, so I got a pair, I knew I didn't fully trust the way the new soles had looked at first glance. This was only a few days before they were scheduled to be fixed. I went to pick up my shoes anyways, thinking it was "just" $60 and I'd bite the bullet even though I may not wear them. When I got there, they had put the black soles on them, NOT the brown ones like I had asked, and my fears were right, they looked terrible on the shoes anyway. I pulled out my card, and was told they only take cash. I said, ok, I'll come back (mistake, I should have let them know how I felt, but I'm not big on confrontation). I went home, thought it over, and decided the work (and product) wasn't worth the $60 I was about to spend. This is where I feel bad, they did the work, I understand that, but if, as the customer, I'm not happy with the work, but can't go back in time to give them back the time they spent working on my shoes, is that my fault? Am I obligated to pay for a service I'm not happy (and never would be even if they fixed them properly) with? They called me 2 weeks later and reminded me my shoes were ready, I played it off like I was going to pick them up (my mistake again, again, I'm not big on confrontation, I just hoped to avoid that), thinking it must happen to them from time to time, and that it wasn't THAT big a deal. I even noticed a "for sale" rack that seemed to be filled with shoes that had been left there by people who may have changed their minds just like me. They called me again 2 weeks later. This time I told them the truth, I didn't want the shoes. The gentlemen proceeded to get FURIOUS with me, like I was insulting his dignity by not wanting them anymore, I listened to him deride me for 5-10 solid minutes on the phone without saying more than a few sentences. Asking me what I did for a living, and if I thought he was an idiot, telling me he had a "funny feeling" about me the first time I came into the shop. It was weird. He was acting like this had NEVER happened to him before. I understand why he was upset, I just think he blew things WAY out of proportion, and became SUPER unprofessional about the whole thing! Bottom line, yes, I made a mistake (or two), but by the time I came to the decision I didn't want the shoes I had dropped off anymore, it was too late. I even tried to pick them up, but then said to myself "this is my hard earned money, why am I wasting it on something I'm not satisfied with?". But the actions of the business were WAY out of line! I almost couldn't believe it, I have NEVER, as a customer of a business, been yelled at by the employees of said business! Needless to say, I'll never go there again!!! read more
