I've been a client of Shore Vet Hammonton for over 10 years and up until now I thought they were fine. Prices are average but I would do whatever to keep my dogs healthy and happy so I didn't question the tests they said we had to do.
So, if I could give it zero stars I would! 6 months ago my husband lost his job, around the same time my dog was diagnosed with congestive heart failure. We have been struggling financially and this month is our worst month yet. My dog is due for his medicine refills to keep the fluid out of his lungs and help the heart pump better. I called in a refill but they said I had to bring him in for a check up which I agree is important to make sure his kidneys are functioning correctly.
I called and explained that we were really tight on funds this month and asked if I could make payments. The bill total usually averages maybe 200- 300 with testing. I would have had paid it off in a matter of weeks but I just didn't have it this week. They're response sorry we don't do payment plans, you can apply for care credit. I told the receptionist I applied but we did not qualify and I have no where to pull money from and if there was anything they could do to help. Her answer was a direct NO. My heart dropped, I said so I'm supposed to let him die, he's in pain. She said sorry we don't do payment plans. I said I guess I'll try to figure out where to get money from so I can get his meds. She was like "Ok." and that was that. As if we were talking about a credit card bill I owed. It's a living animal who has been under your care for over 10 years. This is animal cruelty in my opinion, an unwillingness to help or even try to find some type of accommodation, a reasonable happy medium. I would have accepted "let me see if the Vet can fill a script for a week until you can get him in or maybe what can you pay now? I received nothing no indication that they care about the animals under their care, but they sure do care about the money, that's evident!
I called a few Vets expecting to hear the same response since I am not a client I wouldn't expect them to make accommodation for me. I called one Clinic and they apologized they could not help. I said do you know of somewhere that may be able to help and even she was more helpful than Shore. She provided me with a few places nearby and said she was sorry and hopes that I was able to find somewhere. Then my saving grace, Cumberland County Animal Hospital! I spoke to the front desk explained my situation, their response was phenomenal. He told me the cost for a standard office visit and how much the kidney testing would cost if necessary. They he said come in and talk to the Vet we can take you and work with you. I received an appointment immediately, everything from the front desk to the nurses, to the Vet was fantastic. I explained my situation they said don't worry we can help you. And they did! He conducted a standard office visit explained everything in detail. His examination was extremely thorough. The nurses were fantastic, friendly and extremely helpful. I did not need a payment plan because testing was not necessary, had this been Shore Vet I'm sure I would have had to do blood work, x-rays etc.. because that has been my experience every time I go there. More tests, more money. The Vet a Cumberland Animal Hospital is exactly what I would expect from someone who choose this career, someone who truly cares for his patients and the welfare of animals, not fore a love of money!
My opinion, choose a Vet office, who cares about more about animals then money. And I yes I said office because everyone working from the front desk to nurses to the Vet should all value and believe in the welfare of animals. This is a career that requires empathy, not a retail business. read more
