Your sushi depends on which sushi chef is available at the time. At times your sushi can be wonderful, while other times it can be mediocre. Regardless, it's always fresh and clean. Service tends to fall down hill as the restaurant gets busier. But what I enjoy is that the hibachi and sushi are separated into two wings of the restaurant. Therefore, when you go eat sushi, you don't come out smelling like hibachi. But out of all of the hibachi grills in Mobile, I would recommend Shogun, because it appears to be well ventilated. Mikato's is awful. You have to go home and take a bath following dinner to avoid the stench. read more

Not impressed at all. We waited 40 min for our table then 1 hour and 15 min until our chef started cooking the food. Then our server took 30 minutes to come get our drink order and then 30 minutes in between the times she came to our table. We could see her sitting in a booth playing on her phone texting; guess that was more important then our party. There was also a table of unsupervised teenagers that were being loud, running around and playing. The server left all the dirty plates out on the tables until we asked for our check. The bad: The men's restroom had no hot water, no paper towels, and no toilet paper, indicating lack of attention. In fact, the hot water control on the sink was somehow glued or otherwise fastened to prevent use, indicating that there was not merely no hot water connected that day due to some problem that was being fixed, but no intention of connecting the hot water. One of my dining companions noticed what appeared to be a dead bug in his soup (which had crunchy fried tempura bits in it), which the staff claimed was merely detritus from the fryer or something like that. The good: The service was good, as was the hibachi performance and the hibachi food. I was satisfied with the teriyaki chicken, and my fellow diners complimented the steak. Portions of both were generous. The mediocre: The salad was the kind you get precut in bags from the grocery store, and it was swimming in dressing. Let me start with the sushi, ordered the Red Dragon roll (on the advice of our server) and the Scallop and Shrimp roll. Both were very good, but my favorite was the scallop roll. Everything was fresh and not drowned in sauces, highly recommend the sushi. Now the hibachi... our chef was good, not very talkative but seemed focused on cooking. The steak was cooked to the correct temp but was tough, the chicken was much better. Almost everything was under seasoned, vegetables, noodles, meat. The fried rice was on point though, and the soup and salad were good as well. I don't eat the yum-yum sauce but my wife and daughter said it was very good. Awful service. We walked in and basically were trampled walking through the door by a cook and wait staff. We were seated by ourselves and watched 3 other hibachi tables filled. We sat there for 20+ minutes and never even had our drink order taken. Not one staff member even came close enough to the table for us to bring it to anyone's attention. Finally after 30 minutes waiting we got up and made it known to the hostess that we were never attended to and were leaving. Upon hearing this, she waved goodbye to us as if we were bothering her. I received something that looked decent until I got halfway through and bit into what appeared to be a piece of artificial crab that was rubbery and I couldn't bite through it, so I spit it out. Ten dollars wasted. I also order from the hibachi. I had chicken teriyaki. It had good enough flavor, however the inside of the chicken was refrigerator cold, as if it had been reheated and not prepared freshly. Ten more dollars wasted. I've eaten here a few times over the years, but it had been a while until last night. I was a little scared based on the spotty reviews on Yelp, wondering if the place had gone downhill. I've always had a good experience here - both food and service. Last night was no exception. Our large group ordered an array: sushi, hibachi steak, scallops, shrimp and chicken. Everything was delicious, including the seafood (which I am a known snob of). They load you up on carbs - you get fried rice AND some yummy noodles. Brought home a ton of leftovers - which is typical for these hibachi places. So you really get your money's worth because you get 2 meals for the price of 1. I would definitely go back!! Always entertaining to watch the chefs wield their fire and knives. read more

I had really high expectations for this place because I've heard so many good things. I didn't hate it, the service was friendly, the chef was excellent and talkative. We went around 4 and the place was really slow so we got a hibachi table to ourselves. Our server was with us after a few minutes and took our drink orders, which took awhile to come out. I ordered the steak and chicken combo, my husband got just the steak, and we shared the mega spicy roll. The sushi came out as the chef was finishing up our hibachi dinner and I was really hoping to get it sooner so I didn't have to eat it all at once. The sushi is what really ruined it for me, the rolls were just too big to even get in my mouth in one bite and the taste was bland at best. The actual dinner was decent, the steak was cooked really well and the chicken was good but I wish you got to put some of the food on a separate plate instead of stacking it all on one, it comes with both meats, fried rice, cooked vegetables, and noodles on top. I would have been fine with the rice and vegetables and meat, the noodles everywhere just made it messy and gave me no choice but to eat around them which was hard, and I couldn't even get to half of the rice. I probably won't return here because it's just not for me, but I can see how others would really enjoy it. Worst. Dining. Experience. Ever. The sushi tasted off and it took the waitress 15 minutes to check on us after dropping it off. Took her another 15 minutes to bring us our check. She charged us for a soup we didn't order and then claimed it "came with the meal" but it's still a charged item!'? I have worked in the food industry specifically for over 5 years and never have I witnessed such behavior. I never even saw a manager after claiming their product tasted out of date. We really love this place. Great sushi, soup and excellent service. Thanks Julie and Christina. My wife and I are regulars and eat here at least once or twice a week. The hibachi tables are fun and the chefs are entertaining and talented but we most often just sit in the sushi bar and enjoy the great food. The service is really good unless the crowd is bigger than anticipated and then the waitstaff is overwhelmed. We have tried most of the oriental the Oriental the Themed restaurants I'm Mobile and this is our favorite by far. Try the fried rice and I think you will agree. It has the best taste of any that we have tried anywhere. Once, when I was sick and did not want to eat, my wife stopped and got some clear soup and brought it home to me. Our waiter was courteous and I was appreciative she put up with our obnoxioness even though we fit it as well as an orange in a gorilla pit. This used to be our favorite spot for hibachi and sushi in Mobile. After our experience last night I sincerely doubt we ever go back. We walk in at 6:30 on a Tuesday night to a dead restaurant. It wasn't even 1/3 full. Nothing but empty tables. Our party was 5 and a baby and we chose to sit on the sushi side. They asked us to wait for them to clean off one of the big tables even though I was standing in plain view of an empty dining room full of clean tables. We waited about 10 mins while all the waitresses stand around and chat until finally my husband went up and asked how much longer until our table was ready. At this point we are show to one of the aforementioned EMPTY, CLEAN tables that had been there all along. We order and receive our drinks. Since we were never given sushi menus, I walk up to the counter and grab a couple so we can be ready to order if we ever see the waitress again. After about 10 mins she finally comes back to take our order. Two of our party order off the hibachi and the rest of us order various rolls and nigiri. After about a 15-20 minute wait the hibachi orders come out and are eaten and leftovers put in to go boxes before the rest of us ever got our sushi. It was an act of congress to even get drink refills. She took one glass and was gone so long my husband stood up and looked around the corner to see what was going on and she was standing there talking to the other waitresses with the glass in her hand. It was at this point that we had enough. Our ticket was $131 and this is the first time any of us have ever walked out without leaving a tip. The restaurant was empty and she was more concerned with talking to her co workers than doing her job. I had to walk all the way up front to the counter to pay our bill because she never came back after dropping it off. I have no problem waiting if a place is busy and crowded. But being treated like we were when you are one of 5 tables in the whole place is completely unacceptable! read more

I love Shogun it was so clean, but the waitress was a bit slow. Waitress kept glasses filled. The chef was a little slow coming to the Hibachi grill to cook the food but when he got there it was awesome. Great time to converse with my daughter, it was a lovely lunch outing. One of the better Hibachi restaurants in Mobile that doesn't have an obnoxious owner. The food is good but very inconsistent. This is expected with the many different chefs at the grills. The saving grace of the restaurant is their sushi bar. Cool, friendly sushi masters that were very knowledgeable of their craft. Some of the better rolls available in town and some of the freshest fish you'll find in the area. Kind of pricey but that's expected at Hibachi and sushi restaurants.
