Decided I wanted to treat myself to sushi after getting my hair done so came to a place I've never been before to give it a go. I got here initially around 3 but found a sign that said temporary business hours 4-9 -- like so many places they obviously have staffing shortages. Not deterred, I decided to go next door to Jerusalem cafe for a Turkish coffee and app before coming back over just after 4. I was the first customer to arrive so the chef told me to sit where I liked. It's a small restaurant with pleasing aesthetics but nothing too over the top. I like the lotus-ish looking light fixtures above each table. The server came and got my drink order as I looked over the menu. There's lots of offerings, whether starters, cooked dishes or sushi/ sashimi/ maki choices. I decided on an Orange Ball Roll and one of the specials on the white board, a *99 roll. If you get two specialty rolls it comes with a very tasty Clear soup, so I sipped on that as the chef made my rolls. The rolls were both very tasty and fresh, with a good rice to filling/topping ratio, in my opinion. My only gripe is just a picky one, I prefer my rice to be more moist/ vinegary, so that was the only thing lacking in my opinion. I got two more rolls for my friend togo, but haven't heard back yet how they liked them. I wish they had a happy hour special from like 4-6. read more

Sushi to die for and a Chef that makes the visit all the better! I discovered Chef Sake's several years ago and it has continuously impressed with the sheer quality and creativity that "Chef" bring to the art of sushi. The University of South Alabama is blessed to have this place within walking distance of campus. Some of my favorites are the Green Dragon Roll, the Black Dragon Roll, Roll 'Dat Roll, Jags Roll and many others. Chef's quality selection of fresh seafood is rivaled by none in the area. Also, they have a hibachi menu if you or your partner prefer fried rice with your meal. I recently visited on a cool evening, craving some clear soup (see pic) and some spring rolls (see pic). They warmed the soul and prepped the belly, respectively. I venture out and ordered the Orange Ball Roll (see pic). IT WAS PHENOMENAL! The razor thin, quarter-slice of lemon atop each bite elevated the flavor profile immensly, yet politely. Lastly, it is difficult to find a chef who prepare octopus (Tako) the right way, where it's tender and holds it's pretty purple color. I know Chef buys his octo whole but I haven't asked how he boils/brines it. Anyway...be sure to visit this hidden treasure located by the University. read more

Came in & the employees & sushi chef were basically just looking at me. Not much of a welcome. But when I actually interacted with the server, she was helpful & helped me with what I needed. I ordered a salmon poke bowl. It wasn't bad. But not for the price of $17.xx after tax for the size of it. When I opened my to go box, I was shocked. I can definitely get a poke bowl or something similar elsewhere for a much better price. The flavor wasn't bad. I would order it again, but not at that price. read more

So this is my third time in Chef Sake's in a week. Clearly I'm craving sushi, but I really can't get enough of it from here. This is not necessarily the most authentic sushi I have ever had. In fact, it is pretty Americanized. But in the best way possible. Sushi chefs in Japan are renowned for their subtle hints of difference and consistency. They maximize the flavor of the sushi and make sure everything is prepared perfectly. Though the rolls are definitely Americanized with cream cheese and avacado, the preparation is superb. Everything is carefully prepared by the owner. On top of which, each roll has a unique flavor index. I've had about 7 off the specialty rolls here and they all have a profound different flavor, while maintaining streamlined sushi ingredients. It's pretty impressive actually. I've eaten at most of Mobiles most popular sushi venues and this one simply has beaten them all. The quality just out ranks them. If you like liquid lounges/bike shops sushi this one beats the consistent quality ten fold. If you like Fuji San, the quality is similar but the flavors and speed are better. If you prefer Wasabi, aka more traditional sushi places, then it's tough competition. But this place still out ranks them based on the traditional idea behind each roll. Over all this is my new favorite sushi restaurant in Mobile. Also, service is pretty good. The owner makes everything and keeps track of his regular customers. It's a lovely atmosphere as well. I know this rating may seem harsh, but I believe fellow yelpers like myself will appreciate my honesty. First off, I am not from Mobile, AL. I'm a born and raised Cali girl, so I've experienced the best and highest quality sushi- its safe to say I am a sushi snob. After reading the ratings from Yelp, my husband and I decided to venture down the street to Chef Sake's. I wasn't expecting the highest quality sushi or the fanciest restaurant, but I was expecting to enjoy my dinner, which I did not. We started off with fried Gyoza. The flavor and sauce were taste-y, but I was disappointed with the size and portion. They gave us 4 pieces, and if the price was cheaper, I wouldn't complain, but every where else I've been for the same price you get 5 or 6 BIG pieces. Next we had Miso soup. Miso soup is usually flavorful, but this tasted like bath-water. I'm not sure if they decided to skimp and water the soup down or if the mix they use is this tasteless? Finally, we were served our sushi rolls. I ordered a spicy salmon roll and a C13 roll. When we were served our sushi, I almost laughed! Even though they were flavorful and seemed to be fresh, the pieces were the size of quarters and I'm not over-exaggerating!! Overall, I was very disappointed. Even though the location is convenient, we will never go back again. For the price they are charging, the portions were ridiculous. For the sake of Chef Sake's I really hope this was just a fluke that we experienced. read more

Have been for sushi twice now here. Think it may be my go-to for sushi now. Fairly upscale without being stuffy. Quirky Japanese and Alabama Crimson Tide decor. Rolls are very well prepared. Great selection. Very fresh ingredients. A number, but not all, of their specially house rolls are fried, which sounds a little weird at first for sushi and sashimi, but is awesome. Try Alabama Roll, Rookie Roll, Black Dragon Roll, Fireballl. All outstanding. read more

Started hitting this place up Valentines Night. The ginger was the freshest I've ever had in a restaurant, the wasabi hot and the sushi was certainly the best since moving out of South Florida. The restaurant was clean and smaller, but had enough seats. The inside had a bar and a tv for sports. The service was very good and extremely friendly. The food was good and was pretty quickly. It was close to the university but a little pricey. It was not very busy when we went around 5 pm. One of the best sushi restaurants around. Variety of rolls, good prices and everything is fresh and tastes great. There is also a hibachi menu to order from-but is cooked in the kitchen. No large hibachi tables here due to the size of the restaurant. The place is on the small side, so they fill up quickly at peak dinner hours, but it is definitely worth the wait and worth arriving a little early to secure a table. Wanted to try it out, so I dropped in for lunch at noon on Tuesday. Three or four other patrons seated. Sat at the bar, looked at the short menu and ordered water. Small nigiri listing and larger listing of rolls. The one sashimi offering was nine pieces, chef choice. Was told this included imitation crab and smoked salmon. I asked instead to just order sashimi a la carte, so I could select the fish that I preferred, I was told that is not possible. So I said thank you and left. Omakase is often my choice at quality sushi bars, but not here. Sorry, I can't offer a review of the food. I won' t be back. Ok, I lied, I did go back. Hungry for sushi in a town not known for good sushi, I tried it again, with lower expectations. Very, very good friendly service. Sushi choices still not equal to LA or other large markets, but the fish was well prepared, tasty and beautifully presented. Best sushi that I've been able to find in Mobile. While it is in a shopping center, I'd describe the atmosphere as cozy. The fish was fresh, and my wife liked the roll tide roll. There was too much ginger dressing on the salad, but thats a minor issue. They forgot the edmame order, but it worked out because the sushi portions were so generous that we wouldn't have had room to eat it all. read more

This is the cleanest sushi place I've been to in Mobile, with a cozy atmosphere and a chef/staff who are very attentive. I enjoy the green dragon roll, the avocado makes it very creamy while the tempura shrimp gives it some "crunch." The hibachi steak is also very good. Both were quite good. My wife ordered steak and shrimp hibachi which also was very good. One thing that we liked about her order was that the hibachi came with noodles as well as rice and veggies.
