99 roll and orange ball roll
Lanie U.

Decided I wanted to treat myself to sushi after getting my hair done so came to a place I've never been before to give it a go. I got here initially around 3 but found a sign that said temporary business hours 4-9 -- like so many places they obviously have staffing shortages. Not deterred, I decided to go next door to Jerusalem cafe for a Turkish coffee and app before coming back over just after 4. I was the first customer to arrive so the chef told me to sit where I liked. It's a small restaurant with pleasing aesthetics but nothing too over the top. I like the lotus-ish looking light fixtures above each table. The server came and got my drink order as I looked over the menu. There's lots of offerings, whether starters, cooked dishes or sushi/ sashimi/ maki choices. I decided on an Orange Ball Roll and one of the specials on the white board, a *99 roll. If you get two specialty rolls it comes with a very tasty Clear soup, so I sipped on that as the chef made my rolls. The rolls were both very tasty and fresh, with a good rice to filling/topping ratio, in my opinion. My only gripe is just a picky one, I prefer my rice to be more moist/ vinegary, so that was the only thing lacking in my opinion. I got two more rolls for my friend togo, but haven't heard back yet how they liked them. I wish they had a happy hour special from like 4-6.

Enjoyed the USA roll on a Friday night after working out at USA rec center. Also enjoyed some edamame. Loved the sushi. Bill was about$20. I will be back!

Sushi to die for and a Chef that makes the visit all the better! I discovered Chef Sake's several years ago and it has continuously impressed with the sheer quality and creativity that "Chef" bring to the art of sushi. The University of South Alabama is blessed to have this place within walking distance of campus. Some of my favorites are the Green Dragon Roll, the Black Dragon Roll, Roll 'Dat Roll, Jags Roll and many others. Chef's quality selection of fresh seafood is rivaled by none in the area. Also, they have a hibachi menu if you or your partner prefer fried rice with your meal. I recently visited on a cool evening, craving some clear soup (see pic) and some spring rolls (see pic). They warmed the soul and prepped the belly, respectively. I venture out and ordered the Orange Ball Roll (see pic). IT WAS PHENOMENAL! The razor thin, quarter-slice of lemon atop each bite elevated the flavor profile immensly, yet politely. Lastly, it is difficult to find a chef who prepare octopus (Tako) the right way, where it's tender and holds it's pretty purple color. I know Chef buys his octo whole but I haven't asked how he boils/brines it. Anyway...be sure to visit this hidden treasure located by the University.

Salmon Poke Bowl for $17.xx after tax. Not bad, but not worth the price. Would order again if it was priced better.

Came in & the employees & sushi chef were basically just looking at me. Not much of a welcome. But when I actually interacted with the server, she was helpful & helped me with what I needed. I ordered a salmon poke bowl. It wasn't bad. But not for the price of $17.xx after tax for the size of it. When I opened my to go box, I was shocked. I can definitely get a poke bowl or something similar elsewhere for a much better price. The flavor wasn't bad. I would order it again, but not at that price.

Highly recommend! The sushi(especially Black Dragon and Red Ball Roll) is amazing, very nice employees with great customer service. We also got seaweed salad and it's very good as well. 10/10!

We had the miso soup, jag roll, south alabama roll and who dat roll. All were great! The miso soup also had a lot more flavor than what we were used to it having. Prices were reasonable and service was great!

Uninviting area and wasn't as clean as it should be. Food was bland. Staff were friendly enough but not my type of place to go.

Food was average and a little over priced. Plus they don't accept AMEX. Don't expect a lot from this place.

From my reconnaissance results, everything was wonderful at this restaurant. The hostess greeted me immediately and gave me a tour of the restaurant when I told her that I was surveying and comparing different Japanese restaurants in the area. She asked questions about my event and what I wanted in the experience. The restaurant was bright and clean, which I absolutely loved. Other places were way too dark for my preference. We toured the bar area, the sushi area, and the hibachi area. Everything was clean, organized and inviting. The hostess was very friendly, informative and helpful. She asked about the times that I might come and even suggested the best times for particular days. I felt so comfortable that I wanted to end the tour and order something to eat on this mission, but I decided against it until I found out that they serve dim sum. Since these delicacies are generally not available where I live, I decided to try a few of my favorites. While the taste of the shrimp & pork dumplings was underwhelming, the sesame balls were perfect. I am excited to bring my family here for the hibachi experience and I will update this review afterward. Update after the hibachi experience. When the five of us arrived on a Friday at 5:30 PM, we were greeted immediately. My tour guide from the previous day, remembered me and told the hostess to seat us at a special table. Then the usual process of hibachi started. Our cook was very interactive, funny and entertaining. He prepared our food wonderfully, seasoned it well and entertained us expertly. My cousin, whom had never experienced a hibachi dinner/entertainment prior to this, thoroughly enjoyed her dinner and raved about coming back sometime soon. We all had such a wonderful experience that we will return.

They have hibachi at the large tables if you want to go that route or you can dine at a regular table or booth. The bar is beautiful and well stocked. The waitstaff is always so nice and knowledgeable. The sushi is always fresh. The crab ragoons and dumplings are great appetizers. If you are in the mood for Japanese, you can't go wrong with ShiSo!
