My wife and I found Shock Gelato by chance during a recent two night trip to Detroit. The first night was so good we drove back on the second night for more. We had the cookies & cream, Snickers, and very berry cheesecake gelato. They were all excellent, however, the very berry cheesecake was our favorite. Surprisingly good experience with respect to service and the dessert I was offered. Small gelato store placed in the heart of downtown Birmingham. They offer a wide variety of gelato and sorbet and a number of gluten-free and other dietary options. I was especially impressed by the selection and the quality of the selection. Notable flavors included: - kiwi - pistachio - chocolate - passion fruit, which was sour but tasty - Mango, orange - host of others. I think, due to popular demand and them wanting to streamline the process, you get a ticket for the size you want, then stand in line and can have as many samples as you like. It was pretty packed at 9:00 p.m. on a weekday with great weather outside. A perfect post-workout treat. I added back all of the calories I burned at barre with a delicious Dubai chocolate gelato. It was so rich and creamy, with good crunch from the pistachios. The gentleman working was one of the friendliest people I have ever encountered. He took real pride in their product, and his good energy was contagious. What a great new addition to Birmingham, we walked over after having dinner across the street and were pleasantly surprised with how busy they were. The staff was very helpful and nice! We ate a late lunch today and weren't wanting dinner really. So we decided to go out for dessert instead. We tried Shock Gelato for the first time and it didn't disappoint. The atmosphere was very nice. I held the door for a group of lady customers as I was entering and they were exiting. I heard them say, "I love this place." A group of young people that came in behind me shortly after were speaking amongst themselves while we were waiting to be served. They were also taking about how much they love this place and how they were here at the Grand Opening or first day open. I knew I had made a good choice. Kenny and Olivia were the servers and they did an excellent job taking care of the guests. The place was busier than I imagined a frozen dessert style restaurant would be on a late Sunday evening. Regardless everyone was served swiftly but with attention to detail. We had a group of seven and at least three groups of 5 or more came in behind us. I didn't see one customer that was dissatisfied whatsoever. There are so many flavors in the showcase. I wanted to try them all!!! I understand that they rotate the flavors too so perhaps next time will be a totally different experience. I can't wait to come back and try some more. They do allow you to sample multiple flavors. I tried 3-4 before just placing my order. I don't think that it's possible to pick a bad flavor. I ordered the largest size so that I could get three flavors. All three were splendid. So excited about this new gelato place!! I sampled a bunch and had the hardest time picking just one! The creamy texture, the flavor - two thumbs up! I loved kiwi flavor and white chocolate raspberry but pistachio flavor was the best I've ever had! I also loved the fact that they let you put two flavors in a small size cup. The space is nice and open, with the whole front wall opening up - perfect for the short warm season in Michigan. (Also, check out the bathroom:). It's all so orange you almost need sunglasses ). This is such a neat little gelato place! There were so many options to choose from and I find this place very unique out of all of the dessert places in downtown Birmingham. The staff was very friendly and we were served very quickly. The bathroom was also very interesting and very orange so be sure to check it out if you get a chance! Seriously! Seriously! You need to go here. The only reason not to stop by is if you do not enjoy food. I understand that this is Brazilian in origin, but it had a Roman style feel. There were a lot of different flavors, some that you would expect and some that were surprising. I very much enjoyed the salty lemon sorbet on a hot day. We are extremely lucky they have this in our area. Spread the word and let's make sure this place is a success. Selfishly, I want to make sure that I can still go there for years to come. read more

Absolutely delicious. My husband and I did not know what this business was as the signage on the building gives no indication. We were very glad we did pop inside to check it out. They serve the most delicious quality made gelato I have ever had. They also have a pastry case with incredibly delicious desserts. Everything tastes fresh and real.
