First, I don't live in this town but this park kept popping up on my feed as an uncommon wonder in Alabama, only 45 minutes from my house...how did I not know this?! Anyways, I took a nice ride to the town of Montevallo. Immediately, I saw families playing in the water, walking their dogs, sitting on the colorful swings, fishing and playing volleyball. What a great park to play, exercise and just enjoy yourself. There are plenty of benches and tables to sit, eat a meal, play board games, cards and/or relax and watch the flowing water or the bubbling waterfall. Now, let's get to the wonder of these tree carvings. Each tree is a unique piece of art. I can only imagine what goes through the minds of children as they walk through and see the faces and creatures that are so pronounced in these carvings...the stories that are formed in their little minds. Such a place to stretch your imagination! Anyone living in the area should definitely check out this park. I can only imagine the fun that takes place on this beautiful property.

You remember those field trips as a kid? How every trip was the best because you simply got out of…read moreclass for a time and got to make memories with your classmates in a new place? That's the nostalgia here. It's apparent that this park is older, but we loved the character and charm it brought. There were many older signs, even older walkways not in use, but the scenery and birdwatching was beautiful. The kids stations dotting the trail, of times past, were fun to look at and even interact with. The creek was clean and had a trash filtering system in place. The trail was clean as well and mostly gravel/rock. Our favorite part was the creek's dam and manmade falls from it, and just when we are about to turn around we found it. Note that this is not a loop trail, but in and back out. We covered about 2/3 of it before turning around (sorry, it was Sunday off the cuff and we had dress shoes, did not pack our hiking shoes/boots). Only one mile, so 2 miles roundtrip! Flat and easy.

Veteran's Park in Alabaster is such a great outdoors venue!…read more I use the walking track around the park as often as I can. The park is a large, multi-use area with trails, playgrounds, and a dog park, with amenities like pavilions, restrooms, and concessions. It hosts baseball/softball tournaments, has a skatepark, disc golf, pickleball courts, and a memorial area with inscribed bricks for veterans. The park is ADA accessible and offers activities for all ages, including fishing in its ponds. There's so much here, I haven't yet explored all of it! One drawback is goose droppings around the walking trails so walk/run carefully! Altogether I can bear with all that as long as I get to share the park with the Canadian Geese!

This isn't really a park in the traditional sense. It's a bit of a catch-all. This area houses…read moreAlabaster Public Works Department, RC Club, Bird Observatory, and a community garden (which I think is now defunct). It's also where you can find the Recycling Drop Off since the city no longer has curbside pick-up. It's a bit of a drive from most of Alabaster, so I usually wait until I have a fair amount to take out there; great if you have a place to store it in the meantime. There are two large bins. The rollback on the right is for cardboard only. It used to have a sign to that effect, but I didn't notice it this time. The bin on the left has several doors, with each one labeled: Metal, Plastic 1 and Plastic 2, and Paper. I'm pretty sure the bin used to have interior walls that separated the sections, but they haven't been there the last few times we've been. So everything eventually mixes together, and as you can see from the pictures, people just kind of put whatever in whichever door. I do, however, appreciate the option to recycle in some capacity. The sign out by the road doesn't include the Recycling or Public Works, so you have to keep an eye out for the entrance.

There are some short trails that go around the fields surrounding the water & it's cool to see butterflies, dragonflies, etc. But the entire experience can be ruined very quickly by the model airplane field next door. They fly their planes very low and right over the Bird Observatory and they're so loud, you have to shout to the person next to you. Exactly the atmosphere you think of when birdwatching: loud weed trimmer/leaf blower sounds from the sky while yelling at your fellow birdwatcher. Nice park, ruined by other people.

If you are looking for a darker campground, this is absolutely not the place. They have so many white lights throughout the campground at night it is blinding. I would recommend buying completely blackout curtains and hoping they darken the lights some.

The water was beautiful and the swimming areas are clean and fun for kids. The creamery doesn't allow pets inside ( i agree with that ) but when I joked with staff about having to leave my dog outside while I bought ice-cream they quickly offered her a Pup Cup of cream!! I was blown away! The open air train ride was fabulous! $1 per person one way or $2 round trip. They also allow your pet to ride with you!! The hiking trails were clearly marked and well maintained. I recommend bug spray as it is still very woodsy. The country store had essentials and souvenirs. We did not camp here due to the smaller camp sites and close proximity to other campers. We prefer the more open campground lay outs but would consider it during a less crowded season. The bath house was very clean! We plan to go back and attend trade days!
