I have drunken at this establishment once before but in this occasion there were three of us on a beautiful Sunday afternoon with a hefty appetite. Whoever runs The Tavern Co. seemed like it was a good idea to stop serving in the early afternoon so we went to the Penny Lane Wine Bar. We ordered nachos as a starter, the Chicken Supreme, Chef's Own Burger and the Stuffed Peppers. Despite that there was only one member of staff working on the bar, taking orders and serving the food for what seemed like an unexpected surge in clientèle for that typically quiet day of the week, we got our food served with blissful timing. The nachos were HUGE and interesting because they were a style I had never eaten before, but the mains blew us away. For a slightly higher price than your average café, you got top-quality and gourmet presentation food which tasted as amazing as it looked. I was thoroughly pleased and so much so that I was glad I told the lady who served us to keep the change when I went to order drinks and food.

When we were finally shown to our seats the table was still dirty from its last occupants, and we had to actually ask for it to be cleaned, as the staff had failed to notice its disgusting state. The staff also seemed a bit offended when we asked for the table to be cleaned. Once we had placed our orders service was slow. Dishes started to come out after about 30 minutes, but they did not finish coming out for a further 30 minutes. We also noticed that some of the plates were not completely clean, having stains on the outside of the plates. The food at La Vina is not cheap, so you would expect an extra effort to be made to provide a good service for customers, but this was sadly not the case. The drinks are also expensive but are nothing special. The food seemed to be quite tasty, but its difficult to appreciate a dish which is served on a dirty plate. We complained but we were not really listened to, and only our service charge was removed. I will never go here again.

A very good wine bar nonetheless, and pleasant enough when it's not too busy, Schmooze was one of the first upmarket places to spring up in the area. Now somewhere to be seen, it started off being a very cool but laid back place where students wouldn't feel awkward going into. Now I doubt you would find a pair of jeans in there, unless they were designer ones moulded on to the body of one of these tight t shirt-wearing troglodytes who skulks about these places. Don't get me wrong, it is no reflection of the place itself, it just seems to attract these wannabes. As I said, it is a very accomplished wine bar and the snacky food I've had here can't be faulted. Unfortunately, the clientele here spoil the atmosphere for me a bit, although they are not as bad as some other places in Allerton. Generally, it is a nice, moderately priced place to chill out in, but I wouldn't spend more than an hour here.

In terms of the food, it was tasty - stuffed mushrooms with gruyere cheese and apple and pear pancake. Depending on how much you want to eat, Schmooze is very accommodating. You can have a main course meal as a starter or vice versa as they list every dish on the menu as either a baby or fat dish. Prices were a little more than I like to pay but I would have been disappointed had I had to eat something totally disguisting. As I hadn't I was happy to smile enjoy the food.

The walls are painted bright red, there's a flickering neon sign and the staff all look like they've stepped off a Godard film set. In the daytime, Tabac is a sleepy cafe where you can read the papers, sip a cup of java and fill up on healthy breakfast or lunch. It's at night that it truly comes alive however, with local artists, musicians and students conversing over beer, wine and cocktails. Every Monday and Tuesday evening, Tabac host film screenings of world cinema in the back room and on Wednesdays, there's live gypsy jazz. Thursdays to Saturdays, there's a mix of local deejays spinning everything from classic funk, soul and disco to old skool hip hop. The rest of the time, you can expect to hear everyone from Serge Gainsbourg to Arctic Monkeys blasting out of the speakers. The only thing that stops Tabac being the perfect continental coffee shop-cum-bar, is the lack of faded movie stars smoking endless cigarettes!

Its claim to be a wine bar AND bistro though is something that has never sat well with me. As a restaurant, it is very successful, and boasts breakfast, lunch and evening menus in addition to a tapas menu. The food is lovely and reasonably priced, and the service is good - everything you'd expect from a small restaurant. However, on a busy night, Mello occasionally falls a little short. Staff are torn between serving behind the bar or serving the food, and if there are large parties eating in the 'bistro area' and drinking in the bar area, it can become crowded and sometimes uncomfortable, with the local drunk perving down the top of the local Tesco's manager who's trying to enjoy a staff party. All this aside, it is a pleasant venue, with varied music, patrons and food. Somewhere to go for a quiet lunch or mid-afternoon snack, or a good old knees-up and spy-on-the-locals type night!

The bar is filled with a range of seating and booths for a rather more intimate drink if you fancy it and the walls are adorned with a range of sports paraphernalia and plasma TVs. It advertises itself as a sports bar so any sporting event, whether it is a big boxing match or Barnet v Dagenham & Redbridge, Milly's will almost certainly be showing it. They also have live music on at weekends, with local bands and acts performing and creating a fun, lively atmosphere, helped by the range of beers and spirits they have on offer there. There is also a nice little outdoor drinking area at the front of the bar, but unless you're a smoker then I wouldn't recommend it too much as the views of the car park aren't particularly inspiring. One negative about Milly's is its position on the 'Red Lion Shopping Centre', which is actually just a grouping of shops sat next to the bypass, so its location isn't exactly in a busy area. However, this does not seem to deter the many drinkers that go there so don't let it put you off too much.
