Shipp Brothers was a fun joint with a beer wall that seemed overwhelming! Happy hour every day until 5p had me feeling pretty good! Service was quick. We had a group of 6 and they had no problem sitting us with no reservation on a Saturday. One of the employees was able to get the Georgia game on and I was happy as a clam watching football and drinking beer. They even had a THC friendly lemonade that was delicious! If I'm ever in this area, I'll be stopping by just to have another pour of that! The food was excellent. I would compare it to an upscale bar food. My wife and I got the pretzel which was very good paired with one of the lagers. They even brought out extra cheese which was very kind. The wings were excellent too. My friend told me they have great burgers, but he got the special "Bennett" listed on the "Burger Special" board which came with corned beef, so he was surprised that there was no burger, and told me that the corned beef was "cheap lunch meat quality". I was looking forward to trying a couple beers listed on the website, but they were not there. My BLT was delicious, but the "avocado" upcharge was really just an avocado sauce, not real avocado. Most irritating though, the waitress brought us our check while I was only halfway done with my meal - I didn't ask for it and was clearly not ready. My friend commented to her that I still was thinking of getting a boozy milkshake. She didn't get the hint that maybe we weren't ready for the check, and just asks me which one I want. I was planning that as a dessert, so I stared at my half-eaten meal and told her that I'd like to finish my meal first before thinking about that. I haven't felt so rushed in a restaurant a long time. My friend told me that he goes often and had never had that experience before, so we'll try it again - and get a real burger. read more

This is a fun little casual spot in Newark. I came here with my family and it happened to be happy hour which was a fun surprise. I got wine and my husband took advantage of the beers on tap that are self serve. He liked being able to try lots of things. We started with a pretzel which was on the happy hour menu and it was delicious. I got the nachos which came on a cute little can and were good but a little cold which was disappointing. Service: staff are super nice and talkative. They're all very pleasant to talk with and make you feel uncomfortable especially as first time visitors. Ambiance/Atmosphere: inside is spacious and well decorated. It's very clean inside and the numerous house brewed beers are very well displayed on the wall. Food: Taproom burger was amazing. Highlight of the night. The burger patty was juicy and well seasoned. The onion rings were flavored well, but could be crunchier. The bacon was perfect, tasted great and perfect amount of crisp. Topped with beer cheese which was possible the best beer cheese I've ever had. The highlight of the sandwich was the pretzel bun, usually pretzel buns don't taste like pretzel but this one was not the case. It was absolutely fantastic and I can't recommend enough. Bavarian pretzel was delicious. Crispy exterior with a pillowy soft interior and to dip was that amazing beer cheese and the pretzel was absolutely huge. This is a definite recommend for an appetizer. Philly cheesesteak was amazing. Thinly sliced tender and juicy ribeye. The key here is their beer cheese is used over your generic cheese Wizz and it is an astounding idea. The roll is crispy on the inside and pillowy soft on the outside. Definite recommend. Big hoppy was great. Think classic cheeseburger and toppings on a roll instead of bun. Fresh ingredients and juicy flavorful Pattie's come together for a nice traditional-non traditional burger. If you're looking for a classic, I'd recommend over a regular bun. Hangover burger was ok. Juicy burger on a Texas toast. The Texas toast wasn't anything special, tasted more like regular toasted white bread. The egg was well cooked and I enjoyed that addition. The bacon wasn't the same style as the taproom burger and match that quality. The hash brown Pattie was a good idea, but wasn't crispy and crunchy. It was more like a mushy hash brown, I truly think if this was more crispy it would elevate this burger. I'd say you could skip this one. Chop cheese was good. It's no New York chop cheese, but it was well flavored and plenty cheesy. The sauce added a pleasant sweetness and it was a nice switch from your usually beef patty. I'd recommend if you're looking for ground beef, but not feeling a patty. Fries was good. Crispy outside with a fluffy inside. Thick cut fries which I enjoyed from your usually thinner style. My only complaint is there could have been a little more seasoning. I feel they lacked something special to really bring things together. Mac n cheese was ok. The cheesy texture was amazing. At a glance, seems perfect and the texture matched. Unfortunately it was bland, the flavor just wasn't there. This Mac n cheese definitely has a lot of potential and if they added some more flavor would be a definite recommend, but until then I'd pass. read more

Okay. Name changed and we were in the area during homecoming, and the wait at Elliot's was too long as we had tickets to DankHouse. We were sat quickly. Our order taken, quickly. But that was about it. Pour your own is nice, it's easy to use, easy to keep track of your tab. Still nice. No funkiness on the beers - so it tastes like the lines are clean! Their beer - a bit barely heavy on the pale ale, but they have a wide range of options (from light ales and lagers to cream ales to imperial stouts) to cover your tastes. I liked they didn't focus exclusively on local and had a nice range. I'll be back to try their other beers, for sure. This time, we opted for apps and split a sandwich. We skipped the Brussels sprouts this time (I liked the aioli). The Buffalo chicken wasn't shredded - it was *creamed* - not a retraction, just an unexpected texture. Not much heat to it, either (to the delight of my date). Not bad. The trash can nachos lived up to their name. They were trash. Overcooked chicken (the sear had blackened them), the mix was not good, and they use pickled jalapeños. It's a pass. The meatball sub we went for because we were going to do the appetizer but wanted a little more. Plus side - those meatballs are not GFS. imperfect. Flavorful. Liked the sauce and the roll. Tots are basic, as expected. Minus side - they were salty as FUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK. Too damn salty. Excessively salty. And the service. Our server was incredibly friendly, but after ordering we didn't really see her again. We saw a lot of kids walking through (not ordering), nor did they seem very busy. Very neat concept, self pour beer taps with a card. The beer choices were not as diverse as I was expecting (the Root Beer was good). A flight of beers, 2 tall glasses of IPA's and 2 Root Beer's were about $25. The food was not as impressive. I got 4 Whole wings Sweet Chili Garlic and tots, my girl got the The Bennett and tots, her daughter just a salad. The wings were whole and looked incredible until trying to eat them. I literally could not break them apart (drum from the flat from the tip). Instant FOBG (Fear of Bubble Guts). I finished the tots and had another beer and called it a day. Upon friends recommendation, we decided to try this place out on a Sunday afternoon. It wasn't crowded at all, we were sat immediately. They give a preloaded card to go to the beer wall. Insert the card, pour/pay by the ounce. We had a couple of apps since it was happy hour 1/2 off deals. Trash can nachos were big, but disappointing. They lacked flavor, not enough cheese and no salsa. The fried Brussels sprouts were great, especially the lemon aioli. The burger was large and served on a delightful pretzel bun. So first the good- the Mexican corn dip was pretty good. I liked their fries. The server was good and on top of it- always making sure we had refills (which I love). The bad- I ordered the Nashville Chicken Hot Sandwich- this was SOOOO overcooked. A few times I thought maybe some bone was in the chicken because that's how overcooked it was. It was so hard to chew. I will say the sauce was very good on the sandwich so if it was cooked right I would think it would be very good. My fiancé got the all you can eat wings- his boneless wings were SO overcooked as well (I tried them). He tried the Carolina gold, barbecue, & Buffalo and liked none of the sauces. He is a big wing guy but felt like they were just trying to make their sauces different and it just wasn't good. We reserved the back room for a post concert choir gathering. The food service was FAST and the meal very tasty. I highly recommend the chip burger! This was a great local brewery and restaurant that has great food and a fun beer wall. What is a beer wall you ask? Well it is a self serve wall of beer taps that offer a variety of different beers for you to sample and enjoy. The wall is charged per the ounce poured and you need to get a preloaded card to use in the machine. Any money on the card that you don't use/drink gets credited back to your bill. I liked it since I was interested in a couple different types. My favorite was the cider. The food was also great. I ordered the BBQ Burger and substituted tater tots for the chips. The burger was so good I ate the whole thing. I would definitely come back if I lived in the area. The added bonus is it is a local own place and they have a big room you can reserve in the back if you have a large party of people. If you have a chance to go - do it. If you are a beer snob this is the place. It's like one of those buffet places but a buffet of beer! No place like this around here. The happy hour in the afternoon is awesome - half off beer. The whole concept is nice. You just get your beer card, grab a glass, and go try a little of this, a little of that. No need to ask bartender or server for another beer. Just go up and fill your glass. As far as food goes, it's pretty good. I like the special and usually get that. A server there, Brittany, is top notch and can't ask for better service. A little about us, we are married, 5 kids and a small farm where we raise our own pastured beef, eggs, chicken etc. we rarely get to go out. We were in Newark for a date night but we don't live there so we really know nothing about the restaurant offerings there. I picked Shipp Brother's to try for dinner. We don't usually have success at finding great restaurants with quality food. We are picky because our meat is so great at home and I can cook! so I guess we have higher expectations. But I like having a break from always cooking!! Plus we are keto so we don't eat any fried and breaded foods which most menus offer limited selections so there's usually not much for us to get. But Shipp Brothers had great options. We were well satiated. The Hangover (a bacon cheeseburger with a fried egg and aioli) was so good, minus the bread and hash browns and we had the side salads and they were really good as well. I had low carb Michelob Ultra from tap which I don't typically drink but really enjoyed getting it myself from the tap. I thought serving ourselves from the tap was one of the neat experiences about Shipp Brothers. We also met one of the owners and expressed our excitement about our food and experience. We went here after a swim meet. Newark must be a geological oddity, as i couldn't get a signal to check in. I was really impressed with the "you serve yourself." Instead of waiting on the waiter, get it when you are ready. This is also a great idea to monitor your intake, if you are wanting to watch spending. Drove in from out of town to meet family for an after Thanksgiving get together on aSaturday afternoon,which was fun. The Good: Ordered Spicy Bloody Mary's, which were very good. I should say we ordered these because to get a beer, took a several minute explanation, and self-serve from what sounded to be a clunky process. When asked "Can't we just order one from you" we basically got "Sure, but...". Besides, I came to meet and talk with family, not be my own Bartender. I saw one person use the self-serve bar while there, so not a big Wow factor for client drawl. Sorry, my "The Good" took a left-turn there. The Bad: Pretty sure the burger and sides were all heat-and-eat items from someplace like GFS, or at least it tasted that way. Every side was an up-charge, and a significant one at that (plus skimpy). The Ugly: The Price ($$$ not $$) and Service time. While our Server was friendly, the staffing was way out of balance, as there were non-server folks (hostesse, etc) just standing around while only 1 server was on duty, When attempting to "catch" our server to order appetizers, we were told "too busy right now, I'll have to get back to you" (BTW - we didn't order appetizers). OK, but there were only like 5 tables even occupied in the place. So, where the hell was the Manager to kick in some help - think I may have seen her once, and she looked mad (or maybe it was a Customer). The icing-on-the-cake (or bread pudding bites which they advertise online but don't have) was the public access restroom where street folks ask you for spare change - come on! PS: I did give a few bucks and recommended Moe's BBQ next door. Summary: First and Last time I'll go here no matter where it's located. HINT: Find a Red Robin or something similar for a much better food, service experience at probably half the price, and more food. read more
