This review is long overdue. I was recommended to try Shipmanns by a friend of my Girlfriend. Boy Am I glad I went. Micheal and his wife are awesome to work with. After 3 separate visits and vehicle repairs I will never take my vehicles anywhere else for auto work. They are up front and honest as the day is long...no price gouging, no dishonesty just fairly priced solid work and diagnostics. Shipmans has always treated my family like their family since we started going there in the 90's. You walk in and feel at home and everyone wants to know how you are doing and what you are up to. You won't feel more comfortable going in for a car repair anywhere else. Unlike the other majority of auto repair places you may take your car in for Mike and team may come back and say it isn't a problem or doesn't need attention. Mike and team will also let you know of safety concerns over performance concerns. I always leave there feeling very comfortable knowing my family is safe and the work done is professional and up to high standards. Standard oil changes and tire rotations can be done at the dealership or chain repair shop but any concerns outside of that I would highly recommend taking your vehicle to Shipmans. Terrible. I took my car there for an oil change and tire rotation. They then proceeded to completely screw up my rear brakes during the tire rotation process. Two days later I had this horrible grinding noise coming from my rears wheels. I returned there and they said I needed brakes - I had just gotten them done 6 months before. They said they'd replace the brakes and not charge me for the rotation they did a few days before. Totally dishonest. I would stay away. read more

I took my truck there a long time ago, the invoice said my 'spider injectors' were replaced. A year later I took apart my manifold to find a leak. The part was not replaced but 'fixed' with epoxy/job weld. read more

I've been going to Shipmans for a few years. At first it was just for bigger repairs because I live very close to my car dealer, but now it's for all repairs They are exceedingly friendly, affordable, and honest. I was told by my dealer that I needed new brakes. I brought the car over to Shipmans because it was much cheaper. When I actually brought it in, he told me I didn't need a brake job; he was initially confused as to why I brought the car in because I didn't need a brake job. A friend recommended them to me. I live in Chicago but after taking my car to the VW dealer in Chicago and coming out with a $2700 proposal I started asking family and friends where to get a second opinion. My mom mentioned my father always took his car to Shipmans. I called Shipmans and immediately Mike remembered my father (who passed away 12 years ago) and asked about my family. I brought my car in the following day only to be greeted by Mike and his wife, they continued to ask about my family (they even remembered my grandfather). I left my car and received updates throughout the day. At the end of the day my $2700 laundry list from VW Chicago was taken care of for $325. Was looking for a local auto repair shop that was not one of the chain operations. I found Shipman's from other reviews and took my Nissan over there for a minor repair. The owner took personal interest in doing my repair and discussed his options with me. Within an hour the car was done and back on the road. The cost was more than fair and I will definitely be bringing my car back for oil changes, brakes, etc. This is a full service shop and should be everyone's choice over the chain stores. My husband and I have been going to Shipman's for almost 20 years. Our parents used them at our recommendation too. You will not find a more knowledgeable and honest shop out there. I have a Mini and when my service agreement was up they ran a final diagnostic of recommended service. It was going to be over 2000 dollars for routine maintenance. I showed the list to Mike and he explained what really was and was not needed. He did the work at a fraction of what the dealer was going to charge and it runs like a champ. When my sons Tracker broke down, he said it was not worth putting any money into and we should think about a replacement. I can't say enough about Shipman's. After too many years of being ripped off at other chain (and non-chain) mechanic shops, I pledge my entire family's car service work to this shop. Mike, the mechanic, is FANTASTIC. He takes time to explain to everyone -- male or female -- what is wrong with the car, how the problem happens, what you can do to mitigate the issue in the future, and fixes everything at a VERY FAIR price. Warning! If you value your time, your money, and an honest shop to do the job, this is NOT the place to go. My parents have gone to them for years, so I decided to take my car in. When I scheduled the appointment, I was told I could bring my keys inside or leave them in the car. I drove all the way from Chicago to take my car to them, and when I went inside I told them specifically that I needed my car by the end of the day and that my keys were in the car. I dropped my car off at 9:30 - after spending 2 hours in rush hour traffic to give them my business. I checked my phone at 3:30. I had a frantic message that they had left at 2:30 and had "looked everywhere" for my keys. When i called them back and told them that my huge, bright red key chain was right on the dashboard. Instead of an apology for wasting my time and energy getting my car out to them, the idiot behind the counter blamed ME for not bringing the keys in (and said that "nobody leaves them on the dash"), even though before she had specifically told me it was fine. What irks me is the AWFUL CUSTOMER SERVICE! I've worked in customer service for years, and when you make a mistake, you APOLOGIZE to the customer. In addition, when I made my appointment two weeks in advance and told them specifically that I needed my car ASAP, they didn't even bother to look at it until 2:30 in the afternoon. RIDICULOUS. I told them I would rather be overcharged in the city than get yelled at for THEIR MISTAKE, and they still asked me to bring my car back! They were RUDE, HAD BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE and acted completely foolishly. When I started telling my co-workers about it, they revealed that they had also had bad experiences - threats then Shipman's had done work they were specifically told not to do and did it anyway, cars that were messed up, overcharges.
