As with most Chinese restaurants, soothing flute instrumentals of popular songs are played at a low volume for customers and the tables inside are decorated with red and white tablecloths and laid out with both chopsticks and knives and forks. The menu offers all the usual curries, stir fries and starters you'd expect, but then exceeds expectations with its diverse selection of seafood dishes, all of which sound very appetising, but are sadly quite pricey. Pale, click-and-fit wooden floors and white wallpapered walls give the restaurant a sort of clinical feeling and the ambience inside definitely isn't quite up to scratch, but the staff are friendly and relaxed (they don't try to rush you out of your seat) and in my experience, the food is always of a good standard.

Seriously top notch Chinese food…read more What I ordered over 2 visits within a 4 day period... - Crispy seaweed Great little appetizer that is the perfect combo of salty sweet. Enough for 1 or 2 people max. - BBQ spare ribs NOTE: this is chinese BBQ, not American BBQ style -- so the sauce is a thick red color, that's perfectly sweet and spicy. Meat was the perfect amount of tenderness, where the meat falls off the bone, without ALL of it coming off at once. Great value, decent portion size. Enough for 1-3 people. - Duck Pancakes The name puts a lot of Americans off, but anyone who has tried this, always orders it again. I'd say 70% of the tables in the restaurant had this item... duck is really well butchered, cooked and falls straight off the bone. Plum sauce is perfect, everything perfect. So good. 1/4 duck enough for 1-2 people. - Crispy shredded beef Crispy, and sweet. Exactly what you crave when you decide it's a chinese food kinda night. I've had other versions of this where the beef strands are a little bigger, that I actually prefer, but the dish was still good. Good portion size 2-3 people - Crispy squid Salty, crispy, with sweet dipping sauce. More of the same -- another awesome dish that satisfies everything you look for in a chinese meal. Prices can run up to 20 per person for food, with approx. 1 starter and 2 entree dishes (you'll be full!)... Worth every penny and already craving it again!

Looking for some shopping and a decent meal during our stay in Birmingham, our cab driver suggested…read morewe head to the Torchwood Shopping Centre located in the town of Solihull. She assured us that not only were there plenty of shops, but that the second floor also had a variety of restaurants for dinner. Perfect we thought. We arrived at the mall about 6:30PM and realized immediately after entering that all the stores were closed. I guess stores closing early is a British thing. Truth be told, this mall isn't much different than any mall anywhere. You've got your Gap, your Apple, your Disney and even if the name isn't the same on so many others, the wares certainly are. Giving up on shopping we headed up to the second floor to check out the restaurants. Ugh. Mall food. So, we did what any enterprising team in the same situation would do. We turned to the Yelp app. Yea, Yelp app! Looking at the options within walking distance, many seemed uninspiring. But, there was one that stuck out. A 5-star review of the Metro Bar by Yelp user Nicola T. Better yet, Nicola had 166 Yelp reviews in the bag. That's what I call credibility. It was only a six minute walk to the Metro Bar and we were able to get a seat right away. I guess timing is everything, because not too much later, the place was packed. We ordered some drinks and took a moment to catch our breath. What a fabulous place. Open and airy, modern and clean, this was exactly the restaurant we were hoping to find. We intended on starting with some appetizers but nothing really resonated, so instead we ordered a couple of servings of warm bread, olives and roasted garlic. The bread and olives were delicious, but it was the roasted garlic that really got me going. It's amazing how garlic can go from being tart to sweet just by roasting it. Comfortable in the knowledge that I was sleeping alone, I went to town. http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/metro-bar-solihull?select=nuxHt53MVZtLlXGWwGfsEg#e6iho--3Vg5CLalwggTPvQ For our entrees, I ordered the Shoulder of Lamb as did one of my dinner mates. The other mate (like how I'm using English terms???) ordered the Rib Eye. I also ordered a dinner salad. The meals arrived after a reasonable wait. Oddly the salads arrived at the same time. I think that was intentional, although unexpected. I thought my salad was fine. The other person at the table who ordered a salad didn't really take more than a couple of bites of his. There's only one word that describes the lamb: succulent. Absolutely, perfectly succulent. Each bite was a celebration of taste. http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/metro-bar-solihull?select=nuxHt53MVZtLlXGWwGfsEg#nuxHt53MVZtLlXGWwGfsEg I had opted for the Hand Cut Chips but when my plate arrived it was served with mash potatoes. I pointed that out to the server and he brought me a side of chips, thick and fresh and steaming hot. Oddly he charged me for them as a side order which I think was a bit out of line since I had ordered them as a substitute for the mash potatoes when I placed my order. Still, my intuition was right as the mash potatoes were the weak link in the meal, a bit runny and really not that flavorful. For dessert I had the Vanilla Panna Cotta (an Italian dessert made by simmering together cream, milk and sugar, mixing this with gelatin, and letting it cool until set) which was a great conclusion to the meal and a great way to end a long day. (I had to Google it before ordering it.) All in, including three beers, a glass of wine and gratuity, the meal was £118.74 or about USD $180, which I might consider to be on the high side for a place that calls itself a "bar and grill". Still I have no issues whatsoever with Nicola giving the Metro a 5-star review. Heading out of the restaurant I was leaning towards that as well. But in the two or so weeks since I ate there, the experience has faded a bit in my mind, perhaps in the context of the other meal I had while staying in Birmingham (See my review of Henry's Cantonese Restaurant: http://www.yelp.com/biz/henrys-cantonese-restaurant-birmingham#hrid:bH_J_Oa_8kEnr7-YGDx-VA). So, a high 4-star review instead of a straight up 5-star review. Still very good and with my strong recommendation.

Any Friday or Saturday this place can be extremely busy with the after work crowd before the dinner diners arrive around 7pm. I quite often find myself in there for mid week drinks on a Tuesday or Wednesday and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere. The food is good if a little bit on the expensive side, the drinks are reasonable with a good selection of bottled beers. This is one of my favourite bars in Solihull and I have to say well worth a visit.

My Mum and I went along on a Tuesday evening. It wasn't full but there were a few people there. Service was efficient and friendly throughout. She was able to advise my Mum on an alternative pasta. I love that the pasta can be replaced with spiralised veg. I find pasta boring and stodgy so the freshness from the veg was really different. I had chilli prawns with spiralised veg. My Mum had a goats cheese and tomato pasta. We also shared some delicious pizza bread topped with caramalised onion. A lovely meal- really impressed!

We decided to head over for breakfast and I have to say I was extremely impressed. We were sat quickly and served very quickly. We opted for the breakfast pizza and coffee. The coffee is great quality strong coffee and my Americano was as good as any coffee shop. Most importantly if you order a breakfast it's free unlimited refills which I think is great value. The breakfast pizza which I think is one of the nicest ideas for breakfast. Served on a thing Base with a mixture of sausage bacon mushroom and tomato and served with an egg is a tasty and filling breakfast. (I wasn't able to finish mine) the ingredients all tastes incredibly fresh and it was fantastic value. Definitely will be going back and get again this recently rebranded chain continues to impress.

I tend to come to this particular Cafe Rouge with friends who live around Solihull as it's convenient and suits everyone's needs and budgets. I usually have Demi Poulet which is half roast chicken and fries. The chicken is nicely cooked and I like the seasoning on the fries. This time they had run out of Demi Poulet so I chose their take on fish and chips, which wasn't too successful. The batter was a little too thick. I'll be sticking to fish cakes, demi poulet or the duck from now on! What we all really enjoyed though was the dessert. I had a baked crepe filled with banana and white chocolate sauce. I've never had anything like this before and it was really yummy! All in all, this particular Cafe Rouge is just the same as others. The location isn't as lovely as ones you get in cities but it is a pleasant enough place to pass the time if you aren't looking for anything mind-blowing.

We booked online for a NYE 3 course meal and entertainment as advertised on their website. As you can see from my screen shot. Great I thought so looking forward to it. We got dressed up from our normal attire for just a meal as we eaten at the Solihull branch before and was satisfied with the food. Anyway we got there. It wasn't particularly busy at 8pm. Said we have booked the NYE package. The AM didn't say anything then. We were shown to our table which was a window table so happy with that. Our starters came out as we had to pre-book our meals. Mine was okay, though my partner's looked like it had been reheated. Then our mains came out which was lovely to be honest and fair. My partner's was the Duck in Orange sauce which lacked veg so I gave him some of mine. Then the couple of elderly mom and daughter were on the next table to us asked the " Manager" what the entertainment was for the evening as they too had booked online. She said in her words " No entertainment at this branch" I believe the daughter went up and complained to them. When we said we had over heard that there was no entertainment she replied "No entertainment take it up with HO!" When we tried to explain we had booked this in good faith and was very disappointed that we were here on false pretenses again she replied " contact our HO" she didn't know about any entertainment? As a manager of a restaurant or any establishment you would need to know what was going on? As you can imagine I was very upset at her attitude. We decided to leave at this point and to let them know we were very unhappy that our NYE night had been spoiled. As I already paid £10 deposit and to be honest that was all the food we had had was worth. The prices for the menu was over inflated anyway according to the usual prices menu. We offered to leave our details and for their HO to contact us. Which she declined to take. We were met with pay in full or we call the police! We told them we weren't going to pay as we were expecting entertainment as well as the meal and we weren't getting the package we had booked. The manager who pretended to be on the phone to the police then said she could lock us in until we payed! Then the AM said to us that we were disturbing the other customers and we were spoiling THEIR night! I was flabbergasted and couldn't believe what he had said. I replied no they had spoiled our evening and promptly walked out the door. My partner followed me out but the Manageress went to stop him by pulling him back by his arm and I told her not to touch him as I deemed it as assault. As not been in this position before wasn't sure if that was right. We contacted their HO to let them know what had happened. Not expecting anything back as quite frankly I'd never set foot in a Cafe Rouge restaurant ever again! As we didn't actually pay for our meal and a couple of drinks all but £10. We didn't get a call back as we requested but a reply via email. Had to do this in parts so hope you can read it okay. The same attitude as the branch and the fact they called US rude and aggressive is a joke. The bit at the end when they suggest we go back and eat there again is an even bigger joke. Bitterly disappointed with you Cafe Rouge and the audacity in sending us this email in view of having such a bad experience there. I would urge everyone to boycott this restaurant if you too don't want to be treated as criminals as we were.
