I've been coming to this Harvester for many many years…read more Unfortunately I have to say that it has dramatically gone down hill over the last few years. You will actually see a review below from my friend (ravenous banana) which was written back in 2012 - I thought it was time to write a review myself. The service here is very poor, the staff always act as if you don't exist. Weather your waiting for a table at the door, waiting for the table to be cleared or even waiting to pay them, you just don't get acknowledged. The majority of the staff are grumpy and half of them have no idea about what's going on. There have been times where I've said I'll just walk away without paying as nobody has any interest in getting the bill or taking a payment. I've had the pleasure of waiting up to 40 - 45 mins just for the bill. The food is average, the portion sizes have decreased recently so your actually getting less for your money. The free salad bar is good however someone needs to re-think where it's placed, there's not a lot of room around it at all. They could also do with adding some new types of salad as it's always the same things (quite boring!). The restaurant itself isn't the cleanest, tables and chairs are clean but the floor usually has half a tonne of food sitting on it. The toilets are ok but there never seems to be any soap in the Men's (I've been told its the same in the Women's). To be perfectly honest I have no idea how the place is open. It's that poor I don't know why people still go there and how they've not gone bust because of the poor management. Many people must walk out of there without paying - It's not even worth paying for! I'd rather drive the extra mile or so and go to the Harvester in Monkspath, it's so much better that this place. It's a shame how something that was once so good has turned into a place like this. I hope the management see this and take some action - It's needed!!

After a day trip into Knowle, we were heading back to Birmingham for the evening. We decided to…read morestop at the Sheldon Harvester on the way home. The carpark was full and it looked like they had a nice offer on where you could grab a main course, dessert and bottomless soft drink for a tenner- promising start! We were seated and orders were taken fairly quickly. We decided to splurge a little and went for the 'Plantation Platter for two' instead of going for the meal deal. Priced at £20 with spit roast chicken, wings, ribs, corn and spicy prawns we decided to only have a little of the unlimited salad while waiting as not to spoil our impending feast! When our drinks arrived (just two bottomless pepsis) they came without ice or any fruit/ straws etc. As someone who has worked in bars/ restaurants I was pretty confused as to why any soft drink would be served without ice unless requested. After a surprisingly long wait (a table that had walked in around 10mins after us had their food served and were paying the bill by the time we received ours) I asked if the sauce on the plate was correct. He said that the recipe had changed so it looked different, pointing and touching the wings with his bare hands! After this shock we dug into the food, quite hungry by now. The sauce on the ribs was way too sweet and the same stuff had been smothered all over the wings. My partner's portion of spitroast chicken was cooked to perfection, but unfortunately mine was really dry and stringy. We were taken aback a little at the portion sizes- 4 tiny prawns (which were actually delicious and the best part of the whole meal) and 2 vastly different sized 1/3 corn on the cobs completed the meal that consisted of 4 wings, half a baby spitroast chicken and a 5bone rib between us with 4 pineapple rings and our sides- rice and chips. (Don't have the new recipe periperi sauce, it tastes like cheap spicy ketchup.) From the menu description of a 'platter' it looks like individual platters would have been better value. We were going to order desert but after about 15 mins of waiting for our plates to be cleared we decided to just grab the bill. By this time the restaurant wasn't so busy and servers were gathered at the bar talking. One lady who appeared to be management seemed to be doing all of the work, going between relaying tables, clearing them etc. We asked her for the bill and waited for about 10mins before noticing that she appeared to be just looking around for other things to do, completely ignoring our request for the bill. We waited for a further 5mins before I went to the bar and asked another server for the bill, after having to but into the social conversation between servers after standing right next to them and being ignored! When we eventually received the bill it was placed on the table without a word and nobody came round to collect it/ check if we were paying by card etc. So I took it to the bar where a girl was folding napkins (goodness knows why there was a massive pile of them already done and there were lots of dirty plates left on tables). I explained that this was the bill for the table over there blahblah etc, and held the bill out for her to take. She looked blankly then looked down to her napkins and didn't take the bill! I put it down next to her in disbelief and left wondering why we'd gone to so much trouble to try and pay for a substandard meal when clearly nobody was interested in taking our money! Will not be visiting again!

Looking for some shopping and a decent meal during our stay in Birmingham, our cab driver suggested…read morewe head to the Torchwood Shopping Centre located in the town of Solihull. She assured us that not only were there plenty of shops, but that the second floor also had a variety of restaurants for dinner. Perfect we thought. We arrived at the mall about 6:30PM and realized immediately after entering that all the stores were closed. I guess stores closing early is a British thing. Truth be told, this mall isn't much different than any mall anywhere. You've got your Gap, your Apple, your Disney and even if the name isn't the same on so many others, the wares certainly are. Giving up on shopping we headed up to the second floor to check out the restaurants. Ugh. Mall food. So, we did what any enterprising team in the same situation would do. We turned to the Yelp app. Yea, Yelp app! Looking at the options within walking distance, many seemed uninspiring. But, there was one that stuck out. A 5-star review of the Metro Bar by Yelp user Nicola T. Better yet, Nicola had 166 Yelp reviews in the bag. That's what I call credibility. It was only a six minute walk to the Metro Bar and we were able to get a seat right away. I guess timing is everything, because not too much later, the place was packed. We ordered some drinks and took a moment to catch our breath. What a fabulous place. Open and airy, modern and clean, this was exactly the restaurant we were hoping to find. We intended on starting with some appetizers but nothing really resonated, so instead we ordered a couple of servings of warm bread, olives and roasted garlic. The bread and olives were delicious, but it was the roasted garlic that really got me going. It's amazing how garlic can go from being tart to sweet just by roasting it. Comfortable in the knowledge that I was sleeping alone, I went to town. http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/metro-bar-solihull?select=nuxHt53MVZtLlXGWwGfsEg#e6iho--3Vg5CLalwggTPvQ For our entrees, I ordered the Shoulder of Lamb as did one of my dinner mates. The other mate (like how I'm using English terms???) ordered the Rib Eye. I also ordered a dinner salad. The meals arrived after a reasonable wait. Oddly the salads arrived at the same time. I think that was intentional, although unexpected. I thought my salad was fine. The other person at the table who ordered a salad didn't really take more than a couple of bites of his. There's only one word that describes the lamb: succulent. Absolutely, perfectly succulent. Each bite was a celebration of taste. http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/metro-bar-solihull?select=nuxHt53MVZtLlXGWwGfsEg#nuxHt53MVZtLlXGWwGfsEg I had opted for the Hand Cut Chips but when my plate arrived it was served with mash potatoes. I pointed that out to the server and he brought me a side of chips, thick and fresh and steaming hot. Oddly he charged me for them as a side order which I think was a bit out of line since I had ordered them as a substitute for the mash potatoes when I placed my order. Still, my intuition was right as the mash potatoes were the weak link in the meal, a bit runny and really not that flavorful. For dessert I had the Vanilla Panna Cotta (an Italian dessert made by simmering together cream, milk and sugar, mixing this with gelatin, and letting it cool until set) which was a great conclusion to the meal and a great way to end a long day. (I had to Google it before ordering it.) All in, including three beers, a glass of wine and gratuity, the meal was £118.74 or about USD $180, which I might consider to be on the high side for a place that calls itself a "bar and grill". Still I have no issues whatsoever with Nicola giving the Metro a 5-star review. Heading out of the restaurant I was leaning towards that as well. But in the two or so weeks since I ate there, the experience has faded a bit in my mind, perhaps in the context of the other meal I had while staying in Birmingham (See my review of Henry's Cantonese Restaurant: http://www.yelp.com/biz/henrys-cantonese-restaurant-birmingham#hrid:bH_J_Oa_8kEnr7-YGDx-VA). So, a high 4-star review instead of a straight up 5-star review. Still very good and with my strong recommendation.

Any Friday or Saturday this place can be extremely busy with the after work crowd before the dinner diners arrive around 7pm. I quite often find myself in there for mid week drinks on a Tuesday or Wednesday and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere. The food is good if a little bit on the expensive side, the drinks are reasonable with a good selection of bottled beers. This is one of my favourite bars in Solihull and I have to say well worth a visit.

It had been a year since I made a visit to the Red House and OMG has it changed!…read moreThis place used to rock, now its shambles! It's seems like its under new management? The staff all look new but it has definitely gone from great to avoid! I went with a friend for lunch and for a pint of Warsteiner, that day they had no Warsteiner! secondly the bar tender gave us heads up only certain foods were available due to the chef leaving the freezer door open the previous night.. so she advised we could order fish and chips with peas as that was OK, stupidly we ordered. When the food came, the Fish looked burnt, the peas didn't look right and the chips tasted foul! This is probably the first time i've never finished my meal at a pub, it was such a disgrace. Please avoid this place at all costs, its not the Red House it was a year ago.

It was only after about 35 minutes when the jukebox was switched it seems in some anger by the new landlord. He didnt ask for permission and despite protests by the table of girls who had put money in there it still was switched off half way through a song. Instead we were made to endure a megamix of late 1980s songs, followed by the worst that Jive Bunny has ever put out. What made it worse was the fact the landlord only seemed to have 2 c.ds and so it was played twice while we were in the building. I casually remarked to the bar maid if the "jukebox was broken?" she said "do you not like the music?", I said that it wasnt bad the first time I heard it, but its causing people to walk out as it was too loud and repetetive. I thought that my remark might get the landlord to turn it down or at least reinstate the jukebox, but sadly no, it resulted in the music being turned up to an uncomfortable volume that wouldnt be out of place in a busy bar in the centre of a bustling town, but in a now dead pub it was just plain spiteful. I surveyed the empty seats and looked at the tables with abandoned drinks left behind by people who had had enough of the misery heaped on us by mine host. So inconclusion if you find yourself desperate for a good night, I suggest you go home and nail some headphones to your head, find one c.d of the worst music you can ever find (I suggest Jive bunnys greatest hits), play the first two songs repetitively on a loop and get someone to bring you out of date lager occasionaly and you can save yourself the misfortune of drinking in this pub. Sad, obvioulsy the landlord has no experience of running a pub and is failing on the first rule of hospitality of "give the customer what they want" not what you think the customers want to endure. Waste of a night, dont bother.
