What a relaxing experience! The restaurant is connected to a market, so it's a bit of an interesting atmosphere. The staff were very friendly, the food was hot and what you would expect from a small town local restaurant. They have a nice, small salad bar, which is not as common as they used to be. Very clean and fresh ingredients. We had children with us and were able to enjoy our meal and not feel rushed. When in the area we will be back! read more

A very good, clean place with nice people and great food including a great salad bar. Everything is reasonably priced. There are 30 or more tables. It's kind of in the middle of nowhere. We go on Friday or Saturday nights (they close at 8pm), and have never seen more than two or three tables filled. Have heard that it's busier early in the day. Shetler's has a big, excellent grocery store on the other side of the building. 5 stars! read more

We love coming here for the buffet! Great home cooking, always excellent service and nice variety on the menu. A lot of the food served here reminds me of my grandma's Sunday dinners. This is country home cooking at its best! read more

Shelter's Cafe once served excellent comfort food. This new expensive fast food revamp is quite unfortunate - for their previous customers. There is no longer a great comfort food restaurant in the area. The redesign is now a fast food take out style order counter and trendy inspired new tables. We stopped there on the way back from a float trip on the Current River. With a 5 hour drive back to Kansas City, we were in a bit of a hurry when we stopped in for breakfast. The place was empty, so we thought this would be a good place to stop. After waiting for over an hour for our breakfast, we changed our minds. We all ordered basically the same thing: the Terrific Twos - 2 eggs, 2 strips bacon, 2 sausage, and a pancake. The kids orders came out first. Some had bacon, some did not. Some had pancakes, some did not. 20 minutes later, my wife and my order came out. I got 4 pieces of bacon, no pancake. There were plenty of people working in the back and front. I watched 3 employees help themselves to a nice breakfast of biscuits and gravy while we waited for our food. Just because it is "family owned", doesn't mean that it is good. This particular family has no business running a restaurant. read more

We are fairly regular Friday night customers. Like maybe once or twice a month. We come for the all-you-can-eat catfish and fried chicken buffet. (I think it's bbq ribs on Saturday night). At $7.99 a person for adults, it's a very good deal. The catfish is MOST amazing. Perfectly seasoned and deep fried, but not greasy. I'm talking really really good catfish, and I'm from the Ozarks so I know what good catfish is. They only put out one pan at a time on the buffet, so it always is hot and fresh. The chicken is nearly equally amazing. Juicy and crispy. There aren't a lot of other items on the buffet. Usually some kind of chicken casserole, occasionally pork loin, and a few hot vegetables, which are rather run of the mill. The cold salad bar is adequate and fresh. Usually a couple of different kinds of lettuces and normal salad bar fare, but my favorite is the pickled beets and the pickled okra. Mmmmmmm! Drinks come in large quart jars and their sweet tea is very good. Service has always been excellent and friendly. The waitresses are chatty and helpful but not annoying. A check of the parking lot is usually a good measure of the quality of the restuarant and theirs is usually packed! We are always dining with our children, ages 10 and 7, who also love eating there and are very well accomodated. The only thing I see that could be improved on is the hot vegetables. Underseasoned and rather bland. Other than that, I would highly recommend Shetlers to anyone looking for a casual comfortable evening of catfish! read more

Stopped for some country cooking. Fried chicken was wonderful. Brisket was tough as shoe leather and looked about a week old setting under hot lights. Service from female server was horrible. She brought drinks and then didn't come back. Male server finally saw we were still waiting and came over and took our orders. He apologized and said he didn't know what happened to her. Every time I have eaten at Shetler's it has been very good. I have never gotten anything that was not excellent. The service does lack a bit and I do know because I have been a waitress before. That usually really angers me but the food has always been great. I have eaten there several times, for there lunch specials and also for the catfish on friday nights, along with the fried chicken, which is the best I have ever had. read more

I must have arrived during break time. There were no waitpersons for at least 15 minutes and multiple tables of customers waiting. The cook(?) person who was filling the buffet was wearing dirty jeans, hair in her face and what she brought out was still cold. The guy at the register was sweating cause they left him to run the entire show and he couldn't remember two iced teas let alone handle the entire dining room. When the waitresses finally came in, they did a great job of providing drinks and catching up even though one had an obvious attitude and no smile. I tried the "talked about" buffet only to find the ribs to be cold, not just cooled off, but refrigerator cold and the chicken room temp. Looks like temp checking before serving should be mandatory. The flavors were good, even cold the ribs tasted good. The sign said BBQ ribs which is slightly misleading since they are from the oven with a rub and some sauce. I did enjoy the cold salad bar and skipped tasting the desserts even though they look good, they were room temp too. Overall I'd say GOOD effort but dismal failure. read more
