I find that a lot of these so-called 'traditional English Pubs' are really traditional and English in name only. Well, that isn't the case with this one because not only are they claiming the traditional and English status, but they also have proper English beer on tap. Yeah, that stuff that I really don't like, but when you are in England you have a choice between that, and fosters. Well, I give this place points for actually serving English beer, and not just calling itself an English pub (like the other one nearby).

Different UK beers on tap fit the atmosphere and look of Sherlocke.

I am a huge fan of the Sherlock Holmes Inn. I love the vibe, the look, the beer, and the location. I've passed Sherlock on the tram numerous times, just seeing the sign and thinking to myself, 'I want to go there.' Finally, I got to it, and I was so pleased. It's in a basement, and that just adds to its charm. The bartender was so nice and friendly, I had a Hobgoblin to drink. I loved the posters they had up, the place had a real U.K. feel to it. They do have TVs on to watch sports, with plenty of tables and space. It's an inviting atmosphere with nothing overwhelming. I've heard from a friend that they have the best parma's in Melbourne, but I have yet to judge.

"I want to find a British pub," he said and completely by chance as we took the tram down Collins Street towards Southern Cross Station, a British pub we did find. The Sherlock Holmes Inn is unsuspecting (as you may assume it would be) and sits below ground where the entrance stairs lead you into a simple but cosy pub. I will confess, I had expected something rowdy (there was an AFL and NRL match on this particular evening) and uncomfortable but found myself greeted with the opposite. The Sherlock Holmes crowd this eve were quiet and it was definitely not full to capacity. It was the perfect spot for a quick drink, him enjoying a beer, me a gin and tonic before dinner in a bar I think many a Melbournite may forget even exists.

Guinness and Kilkenny pints $10 :)

Good selection of beers on tap including old speckled hen, hobgoblin, Kilkenny and Guinness just to name a few. Bar has what seems to be an "old English" vibe which somewhat works but everything seems so clean that it seems too new to pull off authentic. This is probably compounded by the bar staff not being British, but that's expected given the pub is in AU. However whilst we were visiting there was a group of patrons that were which added to the good vibe. Good stop for fresh draught beers from England/Ireland. Probably not the cheapest prices around but you can pick up a Hobgoblin, or opt for a pint of Kilkenny or Guinness for $10. For events they run EPL on Saturday nights and have a roast special on Monday (this bar is closed Sunday). Plenty of screens for viewing sports.

This unique establishment on Melbourne's Collins Street sparks attention, and is inviting for all the right reasons. This establishment has a full on irish feel and ambience, and within good reason too, and could be packed out on St Patrick's Day among other entertainment events this pub offers. The Salt and Szechuan Pepper Squid at $14 a pop is to die for, and is much better than the salt and pepper squid you would order in Gold Class at the movies, although theirs is a knock out as well. If this item is anything to go by, I am so inclined to give their Bruschetta a try with a glass of wine there someday. Definitely the type of establishment you would want to go back to for seconds. The service is quick when you go there for dinner during the week. The stereotype of the typical pub is blown out the window literally. There was no pub smell, or overly drunken people spoiling it for everybody else. No such behavious exist at The Sherlock Holmes Inn in a convenient location in Melbourne's Collins Street. A great quality downstairs pub, and this is coming from someone who is not much of a pub goer in the first place.

No one informed us about any policy. We paid for the bottle with 5% service charge which I do not think they deserved. We had a sudden work call at 11.30pm and grabbed the bottle to go, only for the staff to chase us to the front of the bar to inform us that they do not have a takeaway license. For christ sake, we already had bought the bottle!! Though it's alright, we respect policy. They highlighted that they needed to keep the bottle in the establishment. We asked if we could come back and finish it. They said they would keep our bottle. We rushed back to our hotel (Marriott- 200m away for the call). When we returned at 11.58pm, they had already thrown our bottle away. Unbelievable! They were quick to receive our money but equally quick to throw our experience out the window. No doubt, we returned almost at closing times but throwing our wine before closing time - if you wanna go by the book, that is still not your closing time. When we raised our grievances to the staff, she said she told us about closing time at 12 midnight. However, we emphasised that she should have let us know about the takeaway policy and license. Had we known, we would not have ordered a bottle. She looked at us blankly and simply replied "feedback received, but we do not allow anyone in after 12, so you have to leave". Quite honestly, ChatGPT / Claude / Grok could have conveyed more empathy. I am not a VIP customer nor am I a high spender. That being said, I value places with a human connection and empathy, and would regularly visit such places with joy and happiness multiple times. This place is not one of them. For this reason, I will never visit again. If you think likewise, and value authenticity and a true Aussie welcome, you would not visit this place. I hate to give negative reviews but please spend your money elsewhere.

From the moment you walk in, there's a buzz that makes the place feel alive without being overwhelming. It strikes a great balance between upscale and relaxed, making it perfect for a date night or a fun evening out. The warm lighting and eclectic design add to the charm and make you want to linger. Service was friendly, attentive, and well-paced throughout the night. The staff were knowledgeable about the menu, checked in on us at the right moments, and made the whole experience feel effortless and welcoming. Every dish we ordered was excellent -- not a single miss. We started with the Cauliflower & Mozzarella Croquettes, which were crispy on the outside and perfectly creamy inside. The Grilled King Prawns were flavorful and cooked just right, while the Kingfish Ceviche was fresh, bright, and beautifully balanced. The Stracciatella & Heirloom Tomatoes was simple yet outstanding, letting the quality of the ingredients shine. For mains, the Duck Breast was cooked perfectly and full of rich flavor, and the Lamb Backstrap was tender and well-seasoned. The Pecorino & Ricotta Ravioli was comforting and delicate, while the Seafood Linguine stood out with generous portions of seafood and a beautifully balanced sauce. The Honey Glaze Carrots were the perfect side -- sweet, savory, and executed flawlessly. Overall, State of Grace delivers on every level -- ambience, service, and food. An exceptional spot that lives up to the hype, and one we'd absolutely return to on our next visit to Melbourne.

It's the decor from extravagant chandeliers to deer heads with pearl necklaces; it's beautifully eclectic. I had an old fashion and it had the right mix of orange and bitters. I also ordered the burger which was decent and the fries were hot and crispy. The night I visited there was a live singer playing tunes. Service was quick and friendly. Even the ordering is eclectic as you order electronically (QR) pasted to a library book. This place is worth a visit.
