There was a tiny pollinators garden and outdoor classrooms with nothing to do. It is probably a really fun place for a class to go on a field trip, but randomly stopping by didn't make for a great experience.

The gravel parking lot and well-marked welcome "hut" were a nice touch. They had a map of the "trails" (aka- grassy areas where you could walk from one side of the property to the other). It's clear that a lot of time and effort have been put into creating this place! My boyfriend and I made it around the pond in about 5 minutes after ducking under several low hanging tree branches. The lodge wasn't open since it's only open when paid staff are on duty. There's a nice covered picnic area with 3 picnic tables and a grill. Random "acts" of art are strewn about the property (i.e.- a wind turbine, oversized "spare ribs" on the side of the garage, etc). If you are looking for a botanical garden do not come here. If you are looking for hiking trails do not come here. If you are looking for a couple minutes of respite and a unique adventure, then by all means, stop by! All in all, I'm glad I stopped by. But I wouldn't recommend driving much out of your way for it. Since my boyfriend and I were at Washington and Lee for the day it was 5 minutes away and totally worth it.

The horses are well-taken-care of and seem happy. No beefaroni in these horses' diets. But the horses who pulled out carriage did like getting apple Pop Tarts as treats, which was cute. The carriage tour goes all around downtown Lexington, and we saw the old hospital, cemetery, two universities, historic houses and lots more. The pace of travel is slow, so you have lots of time to look around and ask questions. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable about the history of Lexington, and answered all of our questions. Afterward, you get to pet the horses and take pictures with them. I would definitely recommend this carriage tour to someone visiting Lexington for the first time.

Unfortunately, I didn't realize the carriage service closes early and requires advance tickets. They only have one carriage, so it's not like other cities where multiple carriages run in rotation and you can wait for the next one. It was disappointing to miss out, especially since the experience seemed fantastic. I'm sure it would've been a 5-star ride had I been able to go. Just a heads-up to future visitors: book ahead if you're hoping for a carriage ride--don't count on just walking up.

The museum gave us a window into the life of the famous Confederate General. Learning about his family, life and faith really humanized him and showed the complexities of an often polarized time in America's history. Museum staff were helpful, attentive, and polite. They were more than willing to answer questions, but allowed us to experience the museum at our own pace. The virtual guided tour was incredibly informative and a great way to experience the museum. We would definitely recommend stopping at the Jackson house if you find yourself in Lexington.

A family with 4 children between ages 3 to 8 were the others on my tour. The parents indicated that they were being home schooled which to me explained their good behavior and genuine interest in history. Understandably, the presentation was geared to the 4 children which I was fine with. The adjoining museum holds a surprising amount of Jackson paraphernalia, and the attendants were most helpful. Heard of Stonewall Jackson but interested in Major Jackson the family man and husband? Then check this out!

The food is very good, reasonably priced and inventive. Members can go for burgers, or a full restaurant meal. The employees are extremely helpful and nice - they go the extra mile. We enjoy going for the view as well and the nice people. The restaurant welcomes and often has young children accompanying adults. Some events are open to the general public. Of course, the prime draw for a country club is the golf course. This is an older well maintained course - a little short by new club standards but great for the regular golfer. It is open to the public. They had the ladies eastern amateur championship here in 2015 and the young women thought the course was tough. The condition often depends on the weather conditions and can get a bit burned out in mid to late summer depending on the rainfall, despite being irrigated. The golf staff is always helpful and friendly. I just wish they had more lessons to help the marginal adult players as golf is a frustrating game. The club has set up special lessons for the young and we often see a group going out for tutoring on late afternoons with a patient staff member.

We were looking for a place to have a small intimate wedding prior to a destination wedding for the family. The staff at the golf club were absolutely fabulous. They worked with us on menus (prime beef, chicken marsala, salmon) that were extraordinary, an outdoor ceremony with beautiful views, a private newly renovated reception room, and full set-up/clean up. To say we were impressed is an understatement. The food was really delicious (craving the chicken marsala ever since the event), the atmosphere and views were amazing, and the staff (Bob, Lauren, Susan) extremely easy to work with and very helpful and friendly. The day was a huge success and I had no worries about the venue and service based on prior coordination. The day of the event, the staff felt like family. The chef, who was fabulous, came out to check on us. What a terrific group of people. We were very happy with everything and would definitely recommend the golf course for private events.

We stayed in the Equestrian Room, which had one of the most beautiful bedrooms I have ever stayed in, with a homey smaller room immediately adjacent so that my daughter could have a little privacy. The complimentary breakfast served the next morning was better than any restaurant. A mammoth omelet that was as light as it was flavorful was complimented by mouth watering blueberry stuffed french toast that could have been a meal (or dessert) all by itself. Our hosts Iris and Patrick were polite, helpful, friendly but never intrusive. If you have business or vacation plans anywhere near Lexington, VA, you owe yourself a stay at the 1868 Magnolia House Inn.

When I visited, they said they were cutting back hours due to limited funding, though they didn't help themselves by showing me in without asking for their posted admission fee (which I eventually paid after reminding them). The spot is quite rural and bucolic. The museum itself is a couple of rooms, a short video, and there is an opportunity to ask questions to a tour guide in my experience, which myself and others engaged in. The tribe's history is interesting, and includes some commentary on eugenics in the Virginia government that merits exploration. Art objects included one donated by the Australians who visited via Kluge-Ruhe and its exchange program. There was also the opportunity to look at a schoolhouse and a church. The place is not quite what I expected, being Southern American as well as Native American, but it is interesting to stop and learn if you can find a day when it's open.
