The owner, Martha, went out of her way to make the party feel welcome by providing wine and hors d'oeuvres prior to serving a delicious five-course dinner. I was so impressed with the evening that I booked a room with a friend to come for three nights/four days at the B&B. My expectations were exceeded by her hospitality and overall service. As a guest you stay in one of the wonderful bedrooms with exquisite decor and possibly one of the most comfortable beds I have ever slept in. I even bought the same down mattress topper so I could have a taste of Hillcrest when I returned home! There is a seating area with complimentary soft beverages upstairs for guests to enjoy, two lounges downstairs, a wrap-around porch seating area, a luscious garden leading up to the pool lounge area, and two dining rooms. Martha takes into consideration your food allergies and even your favorite foods when preparing dinner. I was so delighted to come down and enjoy homemade Tex-Mex with traditional Mexican music playing in the background. Prior to dinner we enjoyed mixed drinks at the open bar and wine/beer pairings with our dinner. As part of your package, you receive a three course breakfast with coffee/tea service upstairs before your meal. The breakfast was absolutely decadent and is by far the best breakfasts that I've experienced on any of the six continents that I've traveled. The friend who joined me has already booked another stay with Hillcrest and I definitely intend on returning soon. I cannot recommend Hillcrest B & B highly enough - they exceeded my expectations in food, service, and accommodations - especially for the cost of a night's stay!

The B&B has seven bedrooms and six bathrooms, each of the larger bedrooms has its only bathroom and there is a Jack and Jill style two bedrooms that share a bath. It is exceptionally clean best breakfast ever that I've had at a bed-and-breakfast. The custom service and hospitality is five star. Martha and her family are incredible hosts!

The hotel isn't so old, I was told 17 years old but it seems older with its classic style - it's gingerbread moldings and large porches - and it's quite cute. I really enjoyed my time here. I'm glad that I read about the lack of WiFi and cellphone service in advance so I was prepared. I took it as a break to spend time with my friends and husband - a time to disconnect. They also host spiritual conferences there, we were told. I can imagine it being a good place for a church retreat - the rates for conferences were very reasonable - advertised in the $400 range for a full weekend of meals and activities. I can imagine this business growing as the location is extremely beautiful and it's a powerful thing to disconnect and reconnect with loved ones.

We stayed in the Equestrian Room, which had one of the most beautiful bedrooms I have ever stayed in, with a homey smaller room immediately adjacent so that my daughter could have a little privacy. The complimentary breakfast served the next morning was better than any restaurant. A mammoth omelet that was as light as it was flavorful was complimented by mouth watering blueberry stuffed french toast that could have been a meal (or dessert) all by itself. Our hosts Iris and Patrick were polite, helpful, friendly but never intrusive. If you have business or vacation plans anywhere near Lexington, VA, you owe yourself a stay at the 1868 Magnolia House Inn.

Our common rooms and three of our guest rooms offer gas-log fireplaces with original mantels. Breakfast is served with china, crystal and silver to carry out the gracious theme. Relax in the Parlor or on one of the porches after a day of shopping in Lexington's downtown boutiques, and dining in some of the dozen restaurants--all just a few blocks away. Plan another day or two for touring historic landmarks, including the beautiful Lee Chapel-- constructed by the same Victorian builder as the 1868 Magnolia House Inn.

She knows what she's done, and she knows how to fix it. Let's see if she does so. It's really too bad also - there was so much lost potential as a result of this poor communication and unfriendly customer service - mostly just at the very end, which tainted the whole experience. I really wanted it to go a different way because I am a supporter of small businesses in general and believe I was a thoughtful guest; my approach was to be forthright and honest and correct a situation, while hers was to take advantage of the situation and profit off of it, just in case, and without saying anything up front. She not only initiated an unauthorized charge, but acted in poor faith in the way that she did it behind the back of her customers, creating a bad taste from the overall experience. Travelers Tip: Tread lightly with these bureaucratic "Karen" hosts.
