Every year my husband and I meet up with his 3 college buddies and their wives and hang out for the weekend. This year was the Fort Lewis Lodge. Was beautiful views all around. The stay includes breakfast and dinner included. They were both excellent . Loved the oatmeal pancakes! Our room was clean and comfortable. We stayed at the riverside house. Each room had its own bathroom and the shower always had good water pressure. We had a great weekend. read more

I can't wait to return! My husband surprised me with a weekend stay for an anniversary trip. We went hiking, visited the horses, collected black walnuts, skipped rocks at the stream, and spent quality time together over the most delicious, fresh, and comforting meals. The lodge is just a nice place to go. We met a few other couples who visit on a regular basis. That will likely become us. We stayed in the hotel, not one of the cottages, and I will note the walls are THIN. I recommend bringing a white noise machine. read more

Fantastic experience!  This seems to be the first review of Fort Lewis Lodge in the time of Covid-19, so I will focus on how well they have pivoted to address the new challenges. Except as specifically mentioned here, you should expect the same service, friendliness, beautiful grounds and wonderful overall experience reflected in previous five star guest reviews. Erin greeted us when we arrived wearing a mask, and provided touchless check in.  As far as we could see, all staff wore masks when interacting with guests, when servicing rooms and while in common areas.  Guest were expected to wear masks in common areas except when sitting at their tables, and hand sanitizer was available throughout.  Guests who did not want their rooms cleaned daily just had to leave the do not disturb sign on their door.  If they needed additional items, e.g. soap, towels and trash bags, they just had to ask and staff would bring them to the door. At breakfast and dinner, Erin or David came by each table individually to let us know it was time to come inside to get food. When we came in (masked) we could look at a paper menu with that meal's items, and then ask for a sampler of everything, or pick particular items together with what we wanted to drink. We brought our loaded plates back to our tables, and they brought out our selected drinks.  Later, a staff member came by each table to ask if we wanted more of anything and, at dinner time, again to ask if we wanted desert or coffee. One thing to note if you are concerned about eating inside (as we were), there are by my count only eight open air tables (by my count five fully outside, and three more in Bucks Beer and Wine Bar which is covered and has only screens on three sides), so if that's important to you as it was for us, you should arrive near the beginning of the evening cocktail hour or a few minutes before 9am for breakfast to stake out the table you want. For those who are comfortable eating inside, the table were spaced well over six feet apart. Outside there are expansive and beautiful grounds and wonderful hiking trails where you may not see another sole, but in any event where it is very easy to be physically distant from everyone else. All and all we had a terrific pandemic-conscious experience, with great food and service that always felt safe. I can't recommend highly enough! read more

We stayed at Fort Lewis for 3 nights in the Andrew Lewis Cottage and had a fantastic experience. Everything in the cottage is modern and tasteful and the views to the meadow and the cows is a great way to wake up. John and Caryl provide guests with a superb vacation experience with incredible food and so many options for recreation They just added a nearby property with world class fly fishing for the serious fisherman. Highly recommend Fort Lewis Farm and Lodge whether you're looking to get away and relax or if you want to experience all of the recreational options including hiking, swimming, fishing, biking, exploring or kayaking. read more

I have stayed here a few times and each time loved it. Every time I stayed in one of the silo rooms. Luxurious no, but comfortable, clean unique and so relaxing. This is a wonderful place to unplug and get away from it all. There are no TV's or phones in the rooms. Fort Lewis Lodge is definitely off the beaten track so if you are looking for shopping, restaurants or anything besides nature, you may want to head elsewhere. Breakfast and dinner are included in the room rates and I personally enjoyed the meals quite a bit. Always fresh with something for everyone, served buffet style for the guests. I also enjoy heading down to Buck's Bar before the dinner bell is rung for a glass of wine before the meal. The scenery everywhere is just beautiful. There is a river that runs through the property. Bikes and kayaks are available. There are hiking trails through the woods. In fact, I saw my first pileated woodpecker here. Take a bottle of wine up to the star gazing deck and enjoy the glorious night sky without the distraction of city lights. The main lodge offers a TV, gaming tables, books and magazines if you are so inclined. The owners are wonderful, take pride in their establishment and it shows. They do however close for the winter. If you want to get away to rejuvenate or commune with nature, this is the place for you. Just make sure to make your reservations well in advance or you may be disappointed. read more

There are goods and bads about this place. The staff was super nice and friendly . The article in Food and wine was complete false advertising. The food is well done comfort food, but nothing to get excited about. Its a great place for small children as it has farm animals nearby, a easy to get to fishing/swimming hole, and they supply bikes/kayaks etc. The rooms are very plain. Im not really sure how they get the prices , as we felt the rates did not match the experience by a long shot . Its a long way down very small roads. Its a 1.5 hours from the start of the Blue Ridge Parkway. The farm and scenery are great, but we were very disappointed. read more

We stayed two nights and this place is great. The cabin was clean, roomy and well appointed. The food was to die for! The Innkeepers are very personable and you can tell they take pride in their work. I love the mountains and I can't think of a more beautiful setting. The river is gorgeous and inviting. We had two days of good fishing and made many happy memories. The price may seem a little high when you compare it to other Inns or B&Bs but breakfast AND dinner are included and if you walk away hungry, that's you're problem. I can recommend The Fort lewis Lodge without any hesitation and I hope to return again. read more

If your looking for a place to disengage from the busy world look no further, this is the place. I felt like I was staying with some relatives instead of at a resort. Staff is super hard working and goes all out to make sure your having a good time. The meals were FANTASTIC, talking to folks who have returned five to ten years in a row it's always been that way. We love this place. The rooms are clean, comfortable and quiet. There are so many things to do - hiking, swimming, floating in a tube in the swimming hole, bicycling, fishing, sitting around enjoying the scenery, the fireplace and other guests while drinking wine...fun times! The food is very very good, and the innkeepers are friendly, knowledgeable, easy-going people. Breakfast and dinner are included in the price, and they are good about sticking to any dietary restrictions or preferences you may have. This place is absolutely wonderful. My husband and I spent a few nights here for our "mini-moon" - our mini honeymoon immediately after our wedding last fall. We had the best time. We stayed in the lodge and the rooms were nothing to write home about, but the overall property, countryside, and food were all amazing. It's not super fancy - definitely more on the rustic side and completely isolated in the middle of nowhere - but we really loved it. It was wonderful to get away from the city! The owners were so friendly, we loved "Buck's Bar" where everyone goes before dinner, and the breakfast and dinners were SO good. There's great hiking nearby, too, and Ft. Lewis will pack you a sandwich lunch (for a small fee) if you ask. There was even a homemade cookie included! :) We're returning for our 1 year anniversary and we can't wait! I hate to write a review for Fort Lewis Lodge because I'm afraid that even more people will find this gem and ruin it for those of us who love it. However, I love Caryl and John too much not to give them the glowing 5 star review they deserve. Situated in the gorgeous mountains of Virginia near Millboro Springs, Fort Lewis Lodge is truly a place to escape life's hectic pace. My family has been vacationing at Fort Lewis for almost 10 years now and it seems to just get better every time. The crystal clear Cowpasture River flows through the property and allows for decent fishing as well as a comfortable place to cool off in the summer. We stay at the Riverside House which has no cell phone service or internet and makes escaping quite easy. Have no fear though, the Lodge itself does have great cell reception as well as Wifi, and so you can still be connected to the world if you choose. Caryl's food is something we talk about throughout the year, her baked goods and fresh vegetable preparations are nothing short of amazing. John's winning smile and friendly nature have us looking forward to a dinner chat or a trip to Buck's Bar to discuss the day's events. Buck's Bar is attached to the mill and serves frosty mugs of Dominion (Virginia brewery) beer and several kinds of wine by the glass an hour before dinner service. Fort Lewis allows each member of my family to enjoy their own personal time during the day, come together to laugh and talk during dinner and then enjoy a board game or several games of ping pong to round out the evening. It's not for everyone, but if your idea of a vacation is to fish a gorgeous river, sit by the water and read a book, hike or bike the numerous trails that surround the property, or just sit on a grassy hill and soak up the sun without distraction I highly recommend Fort Lewis Lodge. I absolutely enjoy this place. I first started going with a group of guys for the fishing, but after the first meal, it had me thinking my wife would like this. Like so many of my favorite restaurants, the sides are what make the meal, and the abundance of them at Fort Lewis is amazing. My favorite is the broccoli salad, with raisins, nuts and some amazing sauce I could eat the whole bowl! Carolyn will be happy to give you the recipe, but neither me or my wife can seem to duplicate it to her expertise. I've stayed in both the River House and the Silo, as well as the Walatoola, and enjoyed them all. This is a remote location and you should prepare mentally to unplug. I should mention that there is not a lunch (unless you request a packed one) so we've gotten in the habit of packing a picnic of wine, cheese, crackers, fruit, and then found a quite spot by the river. The activities are what you make of it, Hiking and biking, of course fishing the cow pasture river, or just lying in a hammock reading, golf is about an hour away (come to think of it, almost anything other than Ft Lewis is), but on our last visit we braved the "Blowing Hole Cave". This is not a cave to do on a whim, and my only comment will be when you commit to going in the water, go go go and pack a dry towel in a water tight bag! We were going to do the touristy hot springs soak, but had only 10 min left of "family time" where male and females can soak together. Personally, I would rather soak clothed with someone I know, than bare with someone I don't. Meeting new people while waiting for dinner and then finding out what they will be doing that day at breakfast is part of the experience. Like a meal at Disney, book way ahead and enjoy every second. read more

I may have gone on an off-night, but my experience at Ft. Lewis Lodge was not what I had expected. We arrived about half an hour before dinner and grabbed some drinks at the bar area. We sat outside and enjoyed the view for about forty-five minutes until people started milling into the restaurant. We sat down and waited our turn to go up to the buffet line for our food. By the time we got there, the dishes had started to cool down. They served steak, crab cakes, salmon rice, stewed tomatoes, green beans, cranberry walnut muffins, dill pasta salad, spinach and mushroom salad, and corn salad. We had a pumpkin layer dessert. Our meal was ok taste-wise, but it's not something I'd recommend. The owner, John, was very curt and impatient with us when we asked to split the bill, and hurried us from our table so that he could go outside and start the fire. We also overheard the employees rejoicing over the fact that the Lodge would be closing in a couple of weeks. I was very excited to try the Lodge for dinner and was let down by the end of the night. read more

We were down to Ft Lewis and the Warm Springs area for three nights in August. Booked into the Tall Timbers cabin for a long getaway from the world. Got it. Our (AT&T) cells had no service, and no internet. Just as I planned. We went down to do absolutely nothing but hit a soak in the Jefferson Pools and nap. The Talls Timbers is two level, but you spend most of your time upstairs in the huge bedroom. Breakfast and dinner (family style) is included and is quite solid. The bar is open about an hour prior to dinner so drinks are at hand. My only recommendation, depending on your plans, is to bring a nice cooler of lunch stuff. If you're lazing about the place you'll have a stock for snacking. The Tall Timbers has a nice refrigerator and sink area to assist. Clealry, not a knock on the Lodge, just the remoteness of the area. Great place. read more

Wonderful, fresh food served buffet style...something for all tastes. If you're not staying on the property, be sure to call in advance to make sure they can accommodate your party. Allow ~45 minutes driving time from the Hot Springs area. Try to arrive 30-60 min before the dinner bell so you can enjoy a glass of beer or wine on the porch as you take in the marvelous setting of the historic Fort Lewis Lodge. read more

Great location for a family or couple get a way. Drive was well worth it as 6 of us ( 3 couples) arrived at the scenic Fort Lewis Lodge for a Sunday/Monday stay. The owners of the Lodge had thought of everything. Great views, comfortable rooms, superb food and more outside activities than you could take advantage off. The nightly fire under the outside pavilion topped off a delicious Sunday evening meal. The Cowpasture River gave us ample opportunity for swimming, kayaking as well as great catch and release fishing. Spending a relaxful evening outside the bar overlooking the fish pond was heavenly. John and Caryl Cowden have a special place worth visiting, no wonder they ar listed in the Distinguished Inns of North America. read more

By far, the best food I have eaten in my life! I've eaten at a lot of expensive restaurants, but Fort Lewis Lodge tops them all. Even food that I don't particularly care for tastes good! My husband and I have been here multiple times and love it. The cabins are our favorite, although we have stayed in the silo also. The food is made on site and you get dinner and breakfast with the night. Simple but fresh and extremely yummy. This is our escape place. We almost hate to share about how much we love this place. It's addicting. Can't wait to come next year! read more
