This Shell gas station is small but super convenient, right off the 56 freeway at Black Mountain Road. Prices are lower than the Shell in 4SR and Del Mar, and I almost never wait for a pump. The air pump works, but don't look for a car wash. It's not that kind of party. Also, the receipt machines sometimes play hard to get, so be prepared for a walk into the store. Clean bathrooms (according to reviews), and some parking up front. The lot can get tight during peak hours, but it's worth it for the location. It's right next to CVS and close to Starbucks, Vons, and more. Prices aren't the cheapest, but they're reasonable. Overall, a solid and convenient gas stop! read more

Gas is gas. This is an older station which used to have a Carl's Jr. Who remembers it!? The place is clean and all the pumps are always working. Prices are a little on the higher end as it's just off the highway but well worth it. They have all the different lotto types and the lines are never too long. Okay so I ran out of gas for the second time in my life about a half mile from this Shell location. My cars literally in the middle of the road so I'm like damn gotta be quick about this. So after putting on my hazard lights I check maps for any nearby gas stations, and was relieved to see that the Shell was open, hours everyday from 12 am - 11:59 pm. Great! So I walk there with my gas can only to discover, to my horror, that this Shell station was NOT OPEN. The place is pretty much dark. All the pumps are shut off. And the hours on the door clearly read 5 am to 11 pm. Great. Oh yeah and did I mention it's 3 am and I can't get ahold of anyone to come help me? Businesses should make keeping their hours updated online and on map apps a priority, as many people rely on these apps for accurate hours of operation and can be extremely inconvenienced If these hours are not updated! read more

My favorite stop for a pump in the area! I was nearly out of gas on the 56 when I exited Black Mountain Road to refuel. Anxious and glistening with sweat, I pushed the button and opened my tank. I reached for the long hose and plunged the nozzle into my gas hole. It fit nicely but I could barely wrap my hands around its girth as I squeezed and pumped, filling my tank with the petrol it craved to get me where I needed to be. Thanks to Ralph's Rewards I saved 10 cents per gallon! I paid at the pump and didn't go inside so I didn't get to see if my favorite cashier, the swarthy young man who sold me a Powerball ticket last week, was working. Do NOT go here if you need to go to the bathroom. I was in the bathroom for a minute with constipation. The girl clerk came and knocked on the door. A few minutes later, I heard her knocking on the other door. Then she came and knocked on my door again. A minute later she came back and knocked and hollered through the door, "Are you all right?" I said, "I am fine -- do NOT worry about me!" Then she hollered, "You need to come out, there are other people who need to use the bathroom." I said, "There are two bathrooms here, that is why I come here!" Then she went away. But when I came out, she tried to lecture me on the fact that other people need to use the bathroom too, so I just ignored her and left. You have to be patient with people in Rancho-Penasquitos. They are just utter complete morons who do not understand simple concepts like it takes a certain time to use the bathroom and there is no realistic way to cut it short. One is not exactly going to get up in the middle. So the next person just has to wait a minute. EVERYBODY understands that. But that is WAY too difficult for her to understand, so instead she harasses the customer who is legitimately already in there. On another day I had a problem with another employee here who was knocking on the door insisting that I come out by ten minutes till eleven because she wanted to lock up and go home 10 minutes early. Because of the constant harassment over the bathroom, I am boycotting this Shell. If it is a complaint I have, this will be the first one because it stood out the most in my lifetime. Also, my review here is not reflective of the Shell gas as a whole and I have been here several times before, but because of the negative experience I had here it deserves bad rating from me (at least until they get it fixed). I was here on Saturday July 15, 2017 at 14:35 (2:35pm) and I wanted to mention how frustrated I was at this location. I went to a gas pump (the one farthest to the right side facing the store)here, used my fuel points, put in my card, selected premium 91 octane rating and it did not pump. There was nothing coming out. I hit the call button and nothing happened. Okay, so I thought it was just maybe my luck that it is my side and I will try the opposite side. After the guy drove, I brought my car to the other side. Repeated the same process, nothing happened. Hit the call button, nothing. Okay, maybe it is my luck and I shall drive to another pump station. After I did that I realize all I saw was 0.000 gallons and 0.00 for price. I drove away. Why am I upset? 1. My rewards point is now gone. This pump was at 0 so I wasted not one, but 2 pumps worth of points. I have to shop more at Ralphs to make up those points now. 2. There was no sign or any indication that the pump was out of order. The call button did not work (or I was ignored.) I could have gone inside, but I was on a time crunch and see number 3. 3. I wasted 20 minutes of my life and another 10 minutes pumping at Carmel Mountain's Shell gas station what could have been done over here. Thanks again, for not putting the out of order sign like they did for the diesel section. That precious time of my life could have been spent doing quality things instead of pumping here. 4. I was nearly out of fuel. I was running on reserve. Although yes, that is my fault-ish (I do it to maximize my fuel points and time spent pumping gas), I did not like the feeling of driving my car on E with the light on and off (my MPG is about 15). Even though my car has 19.2 gallons (17.1 was pumped at the other station), I am still taking a gamble at the accuracy of my gauge. I never had once had a car break down on me because it was out of fuel. Anyways, I am a loyal shell customer (I almost always pump at Shell everywhere I go, even in LA and SF), but because of this bad experience I had at this location, I felt compelled to leave this review here. People who work here could do better by putting a note at the pump saying that it was not working. Better yet, they could have closed the whole gas station with am apology saying that things happen and I would have been fine with that. I was only here because I was desperate for gas. It is supposed to open at 5AM so I returned at 4:56 AM. Waited patiently but the pumps didn't turn on at 5 AM. The lights were dim inside the store so I went to the door to confirm store hours. A male walked by and waved his arm. I assumed that meant he was going to get to work. There are multiple horizontal single pumps, but they are placed side by side.. so like single pumps with one on each side, instead of the triple pumps placed long vertically. This place can get busy depending on the time of the day. It is located conveniently off the 56 and Black Mountain Rd in the Penasquitos area next to CVS so when your low on fuel and around the area this is the spot! read more

I find myself getting gas here a lot, as the line at Costco Gas is too long and it tests my patience. I'll pay a little bit more for convenience. There's usually no wait, and pretty easy to get in and out of. It's a one way entrance if you're coming from 56/Black Mt., otherwise you go in at the main light off Twin Trails/Black Mt. There's a post office and CVS next door. Prices are far less than the Shell in 4SR and Del Mar, and prices seem to hold pretty steady, so this is the location I go to almost exclusively. Plus it's really convenient, as we are getting off the 56 freeway. They also have an air pump machine here, but no car wash. I deducted a star because I don't like the loud, blaring TVs they have at each stand. What does it say about our society if you can't fill up your gas tank without having media entertainment for a mere few minutes? Also, sometimes the receipt machine is broken. read more

They have the fastest and most updated pump stations... However the price is not the lowest, water with the squeegie isn't the cleanest, and they only have about 8 pumps total. I always go to this gas station when I come visit my family. It's very convenient because it is right off the freeway on black mountain exit. Also the gas station store itself is pretty big compared to the others I have seen. I think the biggest problem I've always had with gas stations is that there was never enough gas pumps so you would constantly have to wait in line in order to pump gas. At this location they have more than enough gas pumps, I don't think I have ever waited in line (maybe once or twice) but there was always a pump available! Also, I really like how there is plenty of space to get in and out of this gas station, especially in between the gas pumps. There's plenty of parking too if you need to just go into the store. There's also a bathroom located at this location and from reading the reviews I've heard that it is clean. It's in a very great location right next to CVS and the post office. And across the street there is a Starbucks, vons, o'riely's and so much more! I always tend to forget to get gas so I always go at night time. The only bad side about this gas station is that it is NOT open 24. Not even the gas pumps. They are ONLY OPEN UNTIL 11PM AT NIGHT. Normally I wouldn't write a review on a gas station cause I've never had a bad experience....until today. The woman who was working around 4:30 pm on 08/16 should be looking into an attitude adjustment. I didn't catch her name but she looked like a cross between Asian or Native American....anyways i was gonna get get gas and needed to put air in my tires but I went inside to get change. I asked for change and she just said "it's right there" with MAJOR attitude. At first I thought she was talking about a change dispenser so I turn around and walk to see what she was talking about (I was confused cause she didn't point out what she's talking about and just said it's right there) I'm looking around and she again looks at me like I'm stupid and rudely said "what are you doing?! It's right there, it's free"...I'm confused at this moment and at the same time I'm thinking is this woman really talking to me like this..she continues to look at me like she's annoyed and I'm stupid and I'm approaching the counter thinking "what is this woman talking about?" I eventually said are you talking about this box right here? And I see a button in it for air and she's telling me I have to click it outside with her same attitude. At this point I wanted to call this woman out on how she was behaving towards me. She then said with her attitude "did it work?" At this point I was like you know what I am not giving my time. I told her I was gonna go somewhere else and walked away. You have to understand I am used to putting quarters in air machines. She could've kindly explained how it works and at least point out and show me the thing without standing there and just saying "it's right there" rudely as I am stupid. I am not one to think people should be fired but this woman......whoever hired her needs to talk to her about her attitude or let her go if she refuses to be kind. Prices are not the cheapest in town but not the most expensive either. They also offer propane tank exchange but they do not offer propane refill services for your existing propane tank. It's kind of a pain that there is only 1 exit out of the station and the pumps are turned off after 11pm. The mobile down the street has the same hours. So no late night fill ups in this immediate area. read more

This station continues to degrade. The attendants are ok, but EVERY TIME I go to this station either the pumps are broken or there is some other issue. Tonight it was two of the three grades were "not available". Pumps are routinely not working, receipts are not available at the pumps, etc. Maintenance of this station is horrible. I think most of the locals have become frustrated with this station so they just avoid it and use another station. read more

My first and sure to be the last time at this place. I wanted to purchase 2 gift cards here. The cashier name Rebecca, did not know what she was doing. She charged my debit card and then told me she could not activate the gift cards. She was Not able to cancel the charge to refund my purchase. Then she told me that I needed to pay cash to activate the gift cards. She told me to go home after calling her supervisor and informed me that charge would be void since the gifts card wasn't activated. 2 days later, my bank statement showed a total charge for those gift cards that I was not given. I came back to store and spoke with the manager name Martha. She told me they could not do anything about it. They could not give me either the gift cards-activated nor cancel the charge. I have to call my bank to file a dispute to get my money back. How ridiculous for the store to take the money and I have to dispute with my bank to get it back instead of the store handle the cancellation for their incompetent cashier mistake? I might have to report them to the business fraud department.!! read more
