For many years I went to Shelby's consistently. 1-2 times a week. The food was great, service was excellent. Clean, fast, delicious. Everything you want in a nice lunch spot. After moving away for a couple years, I returned to the area excited to get some Shelby's again! I went in and had a horrible experience. Every person working was short with the customers, weren't listening and were downright rude. The owner even so much as fed into the disrespect during my time there, specifically with me. I'll spare the details, it's all petty nonsense. People behind me in line were murmuring about how the staff must have been in a bad mood. I thought maybe it was the day. I returned a couple weeks later and had a similar experience all over again. Returned again recently. Considering maybe I was anticipating it, I sent my husband in without prompting him on my experience and he said everyone was rude. (He's a bubbly, happy go lucky guy. Rarely has poor interactions, especially in public settings like this.) He was rang up before finished ordering and was snapped at when he continued. A friend of mine visiting from out of town called me just a few days ago and asked if Shelby's was the place I was always ranting and raving about. She said it had "been a long time since she had such terrible customer service." I'll leave her to explain her own encounter with Shelby's. Frankly, it lined up pretty well with my story. All in all... the food is still good. Good food is good food and they've got it. Considering central Maine doesn't have much to choose from, whenever I'm in the area I'll probably still stop occasionally but probably not for a while. Owning a business is stressful, especially working in the service industry in this day and age. We're all known to crumble under excessive stress, but that doesn't excuse disrespecting paying customers. I'm not sure exactly what's going on over there, but I hope it gets better soon. Moreover, I hope not everyone is experiencing this type of treatment. A lot of elderly folks and young students frequent the Deli. I'm only giving three stars because of the years I had great experiences. I'm incredibly disappointed and saddened. read more

This is my favorite place to go for lunch now. The Waterville/Oakland area has a shockingly low amount of fast/casual places to grab lunch for some reason? I'm glad Shelby's is there to take on that role. I work at Colby and it's a short drive there to pick up something on my lunch break. It gets pretty popular during lunch time (probably because it's so good and also because of said lack of lunch options in the area), so I'd plan accordingly. There are spots to eat-in inside, and there's also a small patio area to eat outside. I usually just do take-out. Most importantly, their food is so good! The Facebook page is updated daily with specials, and those always offer quite a bit of variety. They have hot sandwiches, cold sandwiches, and all kinds of salads. You can make your own, or you can choose from their menu. They have really good soup daily, as well. I highly recommend this spot for lunch! read more

This is a great little hometown restaurant. I wouldn't really call it a deli, but it is a wonderful place to go. Both times I stopped in for lunch, it was packed. The girls at the counter were attentive and never appeared rushed. They asked the locals about their families. Very comfortable atmosphere. As far as the food, their chicken salad is out of this world. They have a nice selection for a create your own salad. Nice options for sandwiches. This place stinks it smells like weed and the toilet doesn't even work. the salad bar isn't even covered and the salads aren't even fresh they use old moldy, lettuce and the drinks are EXPIRED. Went here for the first time today . We found the ordering process unusual , one line for cold another for hot . Of course we each picked a different line . The place was very clean, the staff was friendly and food was made to order. We ordered a chicken tender sandwich and a small chicken salad wrap and soup . The tender sandwich was good . The chicken salad sandwich had very little chicken salad . It had lettuce, tomato and black olive . Unfortunately it didn't have much flavor . The soup portion was small for the price . The taste was fine. This seemed to be a place frequented by locals and staff asked if they wanted their usual orders when they arrived . read more

The food and service was great but the hot dogs are vividly pink. No strange taste but it was just a bit of a surprise.
