My mom has been going to Myra for as long as I can remember, gotta be at least 35 years altho that can't be possible because are we really that old!? Noooooooo. She always used to bring us to see Myra when we were little too and I remember I used to love coming with her to the hair dresser. Shear Genius used to be at pearl kai shopping center but they are now located across the street from Times supermarket on kaahumanu avenue. I have not seen Myra in YEARS (maybe like 20 something years) but needed to badly cut my hair a few months ago and mom told me go see her! So I did and seriously, I had the best haircut I have had in foreverrrr. She layered my hair so good and there were lots and lots of layers just how I like it!!!! I was so happy!! And I was so happy to reconnect with Myra. She was just the same as she was the last time I saw her. Bubbly, talkative and happy, just like I remembered! Today I am back with my mom for another haircut. I used to get my hair cut once a year but now that I've found Myra again, I'm definitely taking care of my hair and getting it trimmed more often! Does NOT listen!! I have been coming to have my hair cut with Patricia for a long time. I called for an appointment and she told me if I could come in at 6:30 she could take me. This is the 2nd time I've come in with short notice, and each tiime has been a RUSHED haircut. As before, she started using eleciric barber sheers. I stopped her immediatley and told her I wanted a siccors cut. "Well, let me finish the other side." Yet continued to use the sheers. I had to agian tell her again not to use the electric sheeres. She only used sicciors to cut the the top of my hair. I looked like Beaver Cleaver when I left. Will NEVER use her again. Make sure she understands exactly what you want. I have been going to the salon for 17 years now and I want to give them props that they deserve. Sharon is my girl who does both nails and hair. She has such a loyal clientele that I most definitely try to keep my appointments because if not I LOSE out due to her demanding schedule. She's so popular and does fine work. I constantly get compliments on her work and she's up to date with all the trends. The salon is always full of regular clients and the staff is welcoming and skilled!! They keep they're quaint salon in order and stocked with awesome products !! I love shear genius and will go to Sharon until She retires!! Although I hope she doesn't !! You know when you haven't cut your hair in almost a year so it's a giant mess of split ends and shame? Unfortunately around the same time I decided that I should get a cut, I learned that my amazing go-to hair dresser for years would no longer be cutting hair and available to tame my locks. After researching on Yelp, I came across glowing recommendations for Myra. However, those rave reviews came with a wait. The first time I called, I was told that she was not working that day, but she would be in bright and early the next morning, even before the shop officially opened. I dragged myself out of bed early the next day and called to see if there were any last-minute cancelations. Myra said she was booked solid, but we found a good time in our schedules for a couple weeks later. When I arrived at the shop, Myra greeted me and brought me to her chair after putting another customer under the heater. I told her that I just wanted a trim and needed to fix the overgrown layering. Although Myra could tell that I had neglected those ends, she knew that I wanted to keep as much hair as possible while removing the tangles. She was very friendly and chatted as she shampooed my hair and then snipped away. I looked around during the trim, since it was my first visit. The shop itself isn't the newest luxury salon in the area. There were boxes placed about the store and the floor needed a good sweeping, although I did come in later in the day, so I'm sure all the tiny, fine hairs from the day had glued themselves to the ground. When we were done, Myra spun me around to see her handiwork. It was exactly as I wanted: a good trim that still kept as much of the length as possible. The price was very reasonable, especially with the shampoo. I told her that I would try to come in on a regular basis. (Like flossing every day, I'm not making any promises.) Called to make an appointment w/ several ladies, I was told certain ones had numerous openings, and then the phone was given to that stylist and first they asked for my name (I would've been a new client, a friend of mine had recommended the place, so obviously they don't know me.) after telling them my name the stylist goes "actually, I don't have any openings anymore." Took my business elsewhere. Seriously annoyed w/ the fact that there were openings before I stated my name & how they all disappeared right after. read more

Myra is Magic! She has been cutting my hair almost 30 years and many of her clients tell me the same thing. Shes sooo good with hair and soooo reasonably priced that sometimes it takes awhile to get an appt. IF I get my haircut by someone else due to traveling, etc..I go to Myra to FIX IT! I don't remember the last time I gave a 1 start but wow this was a very awkward and rude experience. First off their add states walk-ins expected, I drove down to pear kai and couldn't find the location so I called, the woman explained to me where they were and I walked in a minute later, there were 2 women (owner and employee) who had a client each, they looked at me puzzled for a second and said yes, I responded "I'm here to get a hair cut", the employee said in a confused voice "oh, ok" then asked if I knew anyone there, I said no I found you on Yelp! She asked me to have a seat, the owner never even made any eye contact with me at all. 3 minuets later the employee said " i'm sorry we can't help you, I thought she could cut your hair but she's busy", I asked her if it was unusual for a male to come in for service and she stated that they normally take appointments, I told her their ad specifically advertise "walk-ins welcome", she said only if they are not busy and waited for me to get up and leave. As I walked out; I heard her murmur "did you want to do it?" And the owner bluntly said "NO". I have never experienced a small establishment make it so apparent that business wasn't wanted or at least clearly make a customer feel that way. read more

I went into this salon to inquire about relaxers today. The receptionist went up to the stylist and she clearly stated "I do not do black hair". I was very offended when the receptionist came back up to me and tried to turn me away by suggesting I go to a different salon. It was very racist and I do not suggest anyone ever go here! It was not only humiliating but the service was terrible and this lady didn't even take the time to look at my hair. Not only black people get relaxers. So what she should have said was that she does not do relaxers and then I would have gladly taken my business elsewhere. It was very uncalled for and this is something that no one should have to go through. I give them zero stars out of five. THEY ARE TERRIBLE PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! read more
